Super Man Lifts Car Off 6-year-old Girl

Source: Associated Press

A Kansas mother is praising a neighbor as "Superman" after her 6-year-old daughter told her he somehow found the strength to lift a car off her. The girl escaped with minor injuries after she and neighbor Nick Harris said she was pinned under the vehicle.

"He really is Superman," Kristen Hough, the child's mother, said Friday of Harris, the man she said saved her daughter, Ashlyn.

Harris, 32, said he doesn't know how he managed to lift the Mercury sedan off the child. The 5-foot-7, 185-pound Harris said he tried later that day to lift other cars and couldn't.

"But somehow, adrenaline, hand of God, whatever you want to call it, I don't know how I did it," he said.

A 'Sex Chip' For Your Brain

By Chris Irvine / The Telegraph

Scientists are developing an electronic "sex chip" that can be implanted into the brain to stimulate pleasure.

The chip works by sending tiny shocks from implanted electrodes in the brain.

The technology has been used in the United States to treat Parkinson's disease.

But in recent months scientists have been focusing on the area of the brain just behind the eyes known as the orbitofrontal cortex - this is associated with feelings of pleasure derived from eating and sex.

How to Unleash Your Superhuman Mind Powers

By Alex Goumakos / Source: MindStudio.net

Last night I stayed up until 1 o’clock in the morning absolutely riveted to my TV set.

I was watching a show on the Science/Discovery Channel about four REAL people who have extraordinary mental powers.

A real Fantastic Four, if you will.

There was a guy from the Netherlands who was called the ICE MAN. He has the ability to withstand extreme cold temperatures.

I don’t know how he does it (and neither do the scientists), but he’s able to warm his body temperature just with his thoughts (I’ve read that there are some Yogis that can do this as well).

He once sat buried up to his neck in a pool of ice for over an hour!

Last night they showed him running a half marathon in frigid temperatures (up in the Arctic Circle) — with nothing on except a pair of shorts!!!

He was completely topless and barefoot in minus -30C temperatures!!

After the race the doctor told him they would have to amputate his toes because they were frozen dead.

No problem for the ICE MAN…

He simply *willed* his toes back to life with his mind!

The doctor was shocked.

Amazing….!!

Bank Robber Hypnotized Tellers

MOSCOW, Russia — Bank robbers have threatened tellers with knives, shot their way into banks and tunnelled up into vaults. But one woman in southern Russia chose a more peaceful method: Police say Galina Korzhova hypnotised a bank teller into handing over tens of thousands of dollars in what is believed to be just one in a series of daring, if non-violent, bank robberies.

Galina Korzhova was arrested, said Anton Kornoukhov, a spokesman for police in the southern city of Volgograd, on suspicion of hypnotising a bank teller in the nearby town of Volzhky into giving her more than $80,000. She is suspected of having robbed up to 30 additional banks in what Russian media have called a "grand tour" around the country.

The Real Secret of Manifesting

By Jafree Oswald / 90-Day Manifesting Program

Hi, my name is Jafree Ozwald and I'd like to share an enlightening experience I've had in my life. In February of 1995, I took a trip to India to find the answers to my life's deepest questions. After several weeks of introspection and sitting with a guru named Papaji, I had an experience that changed my life forever.

I tapped into extremely expansive, perpetually blissful feeling of peace, and awakened a personal connection with the Universe which provided me with an outrageous abundance of energy. intuition and manifesting power. It continued for many months and I instantly knew every answer to any question that came my way. Yet, perhaps the most amazing thing of all was that I was able to manifest anything that my heart desired...instantly!

After returning to the USA I was slowly brought back into the hypnotic trance of my old lifestyle and a limited poverty consciousness. I was trying to integrate what I received in India, yet nothing seemed to work for me. I believed I had lost this incredible connection because I was struggling with creating money, lacking motivation, life purpose, and couldn't find a career that I loved doing.

Then, one day in the deepest pit of my despair, I had an experience that changed everything. I was lying flat on the floor in a deep depressed and pathetic state, feeling overwhelmed with tons of bills and no job to pay them with. There was nothing that I could do but completely surrender to my entire existence. It was that moment I received a download of information that came from this higher intelligence inside.

Scientists Find Way to Block Fearful Memories

Source: Reuters

U.S. researchers have found a drug-free way to block fearful memories, opening up the possibility of new treatment approaches for problems such as post traumatic stress disorder, they reported on Wednesday.

The findings in people build on studies in rats that showed that reactivating a memory -- by showing people objects that stimulate the fearful memory -- opens up a specific time window in which the memory can be edited before it is stored again.

"Before memories are stored, there is a period where they are susceptible to being disrupted," said Elizabeth Phelps of New York University, whose study appears in the journal Nature.

Earlier studies have shown that drugs can be used to block fearful memories, but the results were not long lasting.

10 Extraordinary People with Weird Superpowers

The Man Who Doesn’t Feel Pain

Tim Cridland is an entertainer and a former member of the Jim Rose Circus.
Tim specializes in sword swallowing, fire walking, sleeping on beds of nails (once even with a Toyota over him), body skewering and electrocuting himself. Tim says he can do this because he has mastered mind over matter. Researchers on the other hand say it’s because Tim was born with a mutation that makes it so he doesn’t feel pain the way normal people do. It’s not that Tim and his ilk can’t feel anything, because they can feel when they are touched, and they can feel temperature. They simply do not register pain thanks to malfunctioning receptors in the nerve cells that tell your brain.

Top 10 Bizarre Psychological Experiments

Magicians, hypnotists and needy women aren’t the only one’s who enjoy playing mind games. Scientists quite like to screw with our heads too and over the years they’ve found some pretty strange ways of doing just that.

1. Social Laziness

In 1883 French agronomist Max Ringelmann undertook an experiment at Grandjouan Agricultural College, which showed that working in groups, actually makes us lazier.

This experiment entailed asking a group of people to tug on a rope both individually and as a team. An instrument attached to the base of the rope measured the force of their pull. The results showed that the subjects pulled harder when on their own and shirked when working in a group. The larger the group, the lazier the subjects got. In a group of eight people each person only pulled half as hard as they had before. This is proof that people are lazier when nobody’s looking.

How Your Name Changes Your Life

By Sharon Jayson
Source: USA Today

Your name made you do it, albeit unconsciously, suggests new research that finds your name can negatively undermine your goals.

Psychologists in marketing at Yale and the University of California, San Diego studying the unconscious influence of names say a preference for our own names and initials — the "name-letter effect" — can have some negative consequences.

Students whose names begin with C or D get lower grades than those whose names begin with A or B; major league baseball players whose first or last names began with K (the strikeout-signifying letter) are significantly more likely to strike out, according to the report published in the December issue of Psychological Science.

Meditation Slashes Risk of Heart Disease

By S. L. Baker / Source: Natural News

Transcendental Meditation (TM) first became well-known in the U.S. during the 1960s when the Beatles showed interest in studying the stress-reducing technique. But meditation hasn't gone the way of love beads and flower power since then. In fact, various techniques, including TM, have received serious scientific scrutiny and researchers have documented many health benefits of meditation.

Now a $3.8 million study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has reached a first-ever finding: patients with coronary heart disease who practiced TM had a nearly 50 percent lower rate of heart attack, stroke, and death compared to a matched group that didn't meditate.

Brain Surgery for Mental Illness Offers Hope and Risk

By Benedict Carey / Source: NY Times

One was a middle-aged man who refused to get into the shower. The other was a teenager who was afraid to get out.

The man, Leonard, a writer living outside Chicago, found himself completely unable to wash himself or brush his teeth. The teenager, Ross, growing up in a suburb of New York, had become so terrified of germs that he would regularly shower for seven hours. Each received a diagnosis of severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, or O.C.D., and for years neither felt comfortable enough to leave the house.

But leave they eventually did, traveling in desperation to a hospital in Rhode Island for an experimental brain operation in which four raisin-sized holes were burned deep in their brains.

Today, two years after surgery, Ross is 21 and in college. “It saved my life,” he said. “I really believe that.”

The same cannot be said for Leonard, 67, who had surgery in 1995. “There was no change at all,” he said. “I still don’t leave the house.”

How Happiness Attracts Money

By Christopher Westra
Excerpt from "I Create Millions"

Do you know there is a strong correlation between money and happiness?

Yes, you heard right. No, money does not bring happiness - the correlation goes the other way. Happiness brings money!

Yes, those who are truly happy now always attract more abundance into their life.

If you think that anything outside yourself will cause you to feel a certain way, then you are suffering under an illusion. The universe wants you to understand that you are the creator of your emotional life. You can decide to be happy now, and happiness is what you really want.
Choose to feel the way you want to feel right now, and then you can have anything you want. You achieve manifesting power when you know the secret. The secret is that you manifest first in the inner emotional world of faith, and then in the “outer” physical world you can touch. Go forth and choose this day to be happy.

Lucid Dreaming: A Beginner's Guide

By Tim Ferris / Author of The 4-Hour Work Week

From 1994-1995 I had the great pleasure of training with wrestling legend John Smith, 2-time gold medalist and 4-time world champion (domestic freestyle record of 80-0; international freestyle record of 100-5).

He was famous for his low leg attacks that made even Olympic finals look like textbook demonstrations.

The problem was, of course, that I was in New Hampshire at boarding school and had never met John Smith. I only trained with him 45-60 minutes per night while I was lucid dreaming. I went on to have my best career season, which culminated with a more than 20-0 record before the national championships…

I’ve since used lucid dreaming to:

  • - Accelerate skill acquisition (example: yabusame)
  • - Reactivate “forgotten” languages in less time
  • - Cultivate zen-like present-state awareness and decrease needless stress

How to Hypnotize Yourself Using the Best Me Technique

The "Best Me Technique" is a form of hyperempiria, or suggestion-enhanced experience, which involves your whole person in the content of a suggested event.

Every letter in "Best Me" corresponds with an element of suggestion, and these elements can be applied in a variety of ways: to place yourself into self-hypnosis, to pre-experience the accomplishment of a goal, and to end your self-hypnosis session.

It's the versatility and the thoroughness of these elements that makes the "Best Me Technique" of self-hypnosis distinct from meditation and visualization exercises. Instead of merely picturing something in the mind’s eye, the Best Me Technique enables us to paint upon the canvas of experience almost any masterpiece we may desire.

This article will show you how to use "Best Me" suggestions to pre-experience the rewards of future goals now, at full strength in the present when they are most needed for motivation, reducing or eliminating the need for will power. (It's also a great way to relax and fall asleep or take a power nap!)

A Microchip in Your Brain Will Control Technology

By Sharon Gaudin / Source: Computer World UK

By the year 2020, you won't need a keyboard and mouse to control your computer, say Intel researchers. Instead, users will open documents and surf the web using nothing more than their brain waves.

Scientists at Intel's research lab in Pittsburgh are working to find ways to read and harness human brain waves so they can be used to operate computers, television sets and cell phones. The brain waves would be harnessed with Intel-developed sensors implanted in people's brains.

The scientists say the plan is not a scene from a sci-fi movie, Big Brother won't be planting chips in your brain against your will. Researchers expect that consumers will want the freedom they will gain by using the implant.

Top 10 Brain Foods that make you Smarter and Healthier

By Jillian McMullen / Health Source Magazine

When it comes to food, you have a wealth of delicious choices. And each one not only tastes good but also supplies unique health benefits. From blueberries to dark chocolate, leading nutritionists and physicians are pointing to certain foods that enhance brain power and, they say, a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Although theres no conclusive research about the healthful brain benefits of particular supplements, food sources rich in vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids may provide benefit, says Jillian McMullen, R.D., LD/N, Outpatient Clinical Dietician with Mayo Clinic.

Vitamin E-rich foods include vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains. Omega 3-rich foods include fish, walnuts and flax seeds.

We also know that adequate amounts of B vitamins are essential for brain function, says McMullen. Some studies suggest a protective role of vitamins B9 (folic acid) and B12, but more research is needed before we can recommend these supplements. It doesnt hurt to eat foods rich in folic acid such as green, leafy vegetables, fortified breads and cereals, and dried beans, as well as those chocked full of vitamin B12 like fish, meat, eggs, cheese and chicken.

5 Simple Steps to Creating Whatever You Desire

By Adrian Cooper
Excerpt from Our Ultimate Reality

We will now look at the very important process of manifestation; the conscious creation of your own reality; the manifestation of your wishes and desires. Always remember; there is absolutely nothing that you cannot be, do or have.

It is highly advisable before embarking on any manifestation project to meditate upon, or consider very deeply whether you really do need and desire any specific objective to manifest into your life and the life of those around you. Sometimes what seems to be a very good idea and desirable idea at the time turns out to be decidedly less than desirable once it manifests as a reality into your life.

It is most important to think only in terms of genuine needs and never of greed or the demands of the ego, as for example would be the case if you were comparing yourself with others. Before you manifest money, for example, you should think or meditate very deeply on what this money, or anything else you wish to manifest will really add, not only to your own life but also to that of your family, loved ones and others around you.

The process of creating anything and everything you could possibly desire is a natural, God given ability that everyone possesses, it is just that most simply do not know or realise it. The Universe is infinitely abundant; there are no limits on wealth or anything else.

When you know beyond any doubt that you are indeed a creator, a co-creator within this magnificent Universe in which we live, an aspect of The Source, The First Cause, God, then you will know beyond any doubts in your very being that you can realise all of your wishes.

2012: Carnival of Bunkum

By Mark Dery / Source: h+ Magazine

I like a good apocalypse as much as the next American, which is why I’ll be braving the Stepfordian horrors of the local mall for the opening of 2012, the German director Roland Emmerich’s latest exercise in disaster porn.

The trailer is awesome. It’s got John Cusack in a puddle-jumper plane dodging collapsing skyscrapers, John Cusack in a car playing dodge ball with a meteor shower, and John Cusack squealing around a corner on two wheels, yelling, to no one in particular, “When they tell you not to panic, that’s when you run!” Plus, it’s got every New Yorker’s idea of schadenfreude-gasm: California barrel-rolling into the Pacific.

According to the movie’s press packet, Emmerich and his writing partner Harald Kloser got a brainstorm when they learned that “the Mayan calendar is set to reach the end of its 13th cycle on December 21, 2012---and nothing follows that date. [...] ‘You will find millions of people, from all walks of life, who believe that in 2012 there will be some kind of shift in society, or a shift in spirit,’ says Kloser. The scope and variety of theories provided inspiration for Emmerich and Kloser as they penned their screenplay.’”

How to Increase Your Chance of Winning the Lottery

Source: Real Subliminals

Most people consider the lottery as purely a game of chance and luck. The statistical chance of winning the lottery is a staggering 14 million to 1 chance! However, more and more people have been trying different techniques to try and increase their chance of winning the lottery.

Not just mathematical and statistical analysis of the numbers or logical number picking systems, but more esoteric methods - methods to open up the mind, increase awareness and align your mind with the "universal source" or "universal consciousness".

A lot of this thinking came about due to the growing popularity of the law of attraction after the hit movie "The Secret". The law of attraction on a most basic level states that:

"Your thoughts (both conscious and unconscious) dictate your reality whether you are aware of it or not, and so whatever you think about you will manifest into your life"

This is a powerful statement, it basically means that we are in control of our lives and what we think about and the action we take dictates our lives.

How to Take Back Your Power

By Edwin Harkness Spina
Creator of Energy Center Clearing

Lately, I've been watching episodes from the 1970s TV show,
Kung Fu, on DVD. It starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a half-Chinese, half-American Shaolin priest who wanders the post-civil war American West looking for his long-lost brother.

Caine is a martial arts master who resorts to using his
fighting skills only when someone's safety is at stake. Kung Fu introduced many Westerners to some of the basic tenets of Eastern thought. Like fine art and true wisdom, many of the teachings espoused in the show are timeless and universal in nature.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: The Power of Psychic Spying

By Florence Waters / Source: The Telegraph

The sign on the door said ‘Remote Viewing workshop’, which didn’t give much away. It might as well have read, ‘Please abandon your logic here’.

Inside was an ordinary office meeting room, with a smiley, professional briefcase-carrying businessman preparing a training session. The contents of the workshop were less predictable. They were based on a training manual written by the military in the late 1970s, in order to train soldiers to be able to harness their paranormal powers so that they would be able to spy on the enemy, using telepathy.

I had come to the workshop to get a better understanding of the historical events behind this autumn’s comedy, The Men Who Stare at Goats, which is based on a true story about the US military.

The film is inspired by the events laid out in journalist Jon Ronson’s extensively researched book by the same name about a group of soldiers, who allegedly called themselves ‘The Jedi’, and who were trained to be able to fight wars in esoteric and “non-violent” ways.

Yoga Better Than Medicine for Back Pain

By S. L. Baker / Source: Natural News

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), low back pain is an enormous health and economic problem in the U.S. In fact, Americans spend at least $50 billion annually on the condition. It's the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work days.

Although most occurrences of low back pain go away within a few days, the NINDS web site states low back pain can become chronic and lead to more serious conditions. However, new research shows there's natural, drug-free and effective help for those with chronic low back pain -- the ancient practice of yoga.

A study just published in the journal Spine found that a group of low back pain sufferers who regularly practiced yoga postures had less pain, improved function, and a better mood. What's more, they were far less likely to take drugs for their back problem than a matched group who received standard medical therapy.

The Wall Street Psychic Who Predicted the Financial Meltdown

By Helena de Bertodano / Source: The Telegraph

A few blocks from Wall Street lives a woman who is not in the least bit surprised at the recent economic upheaval on her doorstep. In fact, she predicted it years ago and is rather enjoying it.

'I love crisis,' says Laura Day, a psychic who advises major corporations on how to direct their business dealings. 'I love turning it around. I'm going to brag – in the last few weeks I've become a hero. My clients were all prepared for this. They were out of the market a year ago and now they're ringing me saying, "The whole world is freaking out and I'm just sitting here calm."'

The 49-year-old mother has earned more than $10 million (£6.4 million) in the past 15 years advising corporations and individuals including Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Rosanna Arquette. Day's otherwordly expertise doesn't simply encompass the financial; Arquette credits her with saving her daughter's life by sensing a potentially fatal medical condition.

While there is nothing very surprising about the Hollywood A-list embracing the help of a psychic, it is harder to imagine mainstream businesses enlisting her services. She takes on five businesses at a time, each of which pays her $10,000 (£6,400) a month for 24-hour access to her.

Why Our Brains Will Never Live in the Matrix

By Athena Andreadis / Source: h+ Magazine

When surveying the goals of transhumanists, I found it striking how heavily many of them favor conventional engineering. This seems inefficient and inelegant, since such engineering reproduces slowly, clumsily and imperfectly, what biological systems have fine-tuned for eons, from nanobots (enzymes and miRNAs) to virtual reality (lucid dreaming).

Recently, I was reading an article about memory chips. (See Resources) In it, the primary researcher makes two statements that fall in the “not even wrong” category: “Brain cells are nothing but leaky bags of salt solution,” and “I don’t need a grand theory of the mind to fix what is essentially a signal-processing problem.”

And it came to me in a flash that many transhumanists are uncomfortable with biology and would rather bypass it altogether for two reasons, each exemplified by these sentences. The first is that biological systems are squishy — they exude blood, sweat and tears, which are deemed proper only for women and weaklings. The second is that, unlike silicon systems, biological software is inseparable from hardware. And therein lies the major stumbling block to personal immortality.

How Science Discovered the Silva Method

By Laura Silva / Source: The Silva Life System

In the beginning, José Silva was alone in his research. Even his wife Paula was skeptical and cautious until she eventually saw the benefits in the work he was doing with their children. A few friends in Laredo became interested and listened to his ideas and helped him when he asked them to, but many more were suspicious and even hostile.

Eventually Silva’s work attracted the attention of one scientist, who became a close friend and associate, and who brought the research findings to the attention of many other scientists. This pioneering research, overcoming many obstacles and challenges, has provided José Silva with many wonderful memories of the people and events that helped us to take the first step into the second phase of human evolution on the planet by succeeding with metaphysics.

This is the story about how scientists became aware of the new science that José Silva has named “psychorientology.”

10 More Amazing Facts About Dreams

Source: The List Universe

Every year scientific groups and national organizations conduct studies and experiments examining human dreams. The study of dreams is known as oneirology.

Progress is being made in this area of work, but as a population we know very little about the content and purpose of our dreams. One thing is for sure, the images, thoughts, and emotions that pass through our bodies during sleep can greatly influence our outlook on life.

Keep in mind that the word dream stems from the Middle English word dreme, meaning joy and music. Following our first list about dreams, here are ten more amazing facts about dreams.

Brain Scans Reveal What You've Seen

By Brandon Keim / Source: CNN

Scientists are one step closer to knowing what you've seen by reading your mind.

Having modeled how images are represented in the brain, the researchers translated recorded patterns of neural activity into pictures of what test subjects had seen.

Though practical applications are decades away, the research could someday lead to dream-readers and thought-controlled computers.

"It's what you would actually use if you were going to build a functional brain-reading device," said Jack Gallant, a University of California, Berkeley neuroscientist.

The research, led by Gallant and Berkeley postdoctoral researcher Thomas Naselaris, builds on earlier work in which they used neural patterns to identify pictures from within a limited set of options.

How To Remain Happy When the Financial World Crumbles

By Sonja Lyubomirsky / Source: Psychology Today

I’ve had a lot to worry about lately. On my personal list: Watching my mutual funds melt down, the increasing hassle (not to mention price) of my commute, my child’s weep downs, how to super-rush a visa to Brazil amid interestingly-timed “technical difficulties” at the Consulate, and (don’t even let me go there) Sarah Palin.

Sometimes I think our country has gone nuts. We have collapsing financial markets, unprecedented housing foreclosures, $4 gas, and an emperor without any clothes on perambulating in the of an incredibly critical presidential election. But despite everything, many people (myself included) have a remarkable capacity to maintain optimism and confidence and even some cheer – about ourselves and the world around us.

The label for the process by which we manage to survive – and even thrive – in the face of stress, trauma, and adversity is coping. It’s how we assuage the hurt, anxiety, or suffering caused by a negative event. There’s a massive – and I mean massive – literature in psychology on coping, but I will tell you about my two favorite findings regarding successful coping.

Can We Really Read Minds?

By Digby Tantam / Source: Psychology Today

The belief in telepathy is deeply rooted in many of us, and not only science fiction fans. Mothers ring their daughters thousands of miles away, and their daughters say, "How did you know? I was just thinking of you". We walk into a room and we just get a feeling about someone: it is as if we knew what they were thinking, and what they will say next.

Professors of parapsychology--and there are a few--have been unable to replicate these results in the laboratory. Minds they have to conclude cannot pass thoughts or images to other minds directly.

Perhaps this should not be a surprise. After all, we do pass thoughts and images to each other pretty effectively by speaking, drawing, singing, and so on. More to the point, our minds are our own, and we want them to remain so. We fight to keep our original thoughts.

So is telepathy just wishful thinking, born out of our wish to be close to our loved ones and not feel that they have minds that will be for ever closed to us? Or is it a more general feeling against the scientists and others who seem to want to reduce everything to atoms without allowing for the connectedness that joins us to the universe?

How Subliminal Learning Works

Source: Real Subliminals

Your regular conscious way of learning is through repeated experience and practice; through this process the new information will be stored deep within your mind on an unconscious level. This is how we learn to ride a bicycle, learn math, or even develop our confidence and establish self beliefs for example.

Subliminal learning bypasses this conscious experience and practice stage and sends information directly to your unconscious mind. If the same subliminal messages are sent frequently enough this will lead to the same outcome, i.e. a shift in your self beliefs. The only difference is that the shift comes naturally, from within!

We are all exposed to subliminal messages every day due to the massive amounts of information we are exposed to, and our limited capacity to consciously register it. As a result this may lead to small changes in our minds, or over time if you are exposed to the same subliminal information over and over then there will be lasting changes.

Listening to a subliminal messaging album is simply a way to counteract this and take control. By targeting subliminal messages consistently at your mind, in larger and focused quantities you can make positive changes in areas of your choice.

Children Can 'Imagine Away' Pain

Source: BBC

Children can be taught to use their imagination to tackle frequent bouts of stomach pain, research shows.

A relaxation-type CD, asking children to imagine themselves in scenarios like floating on a cloud led to dramatic improvements in abdominal pain.

The US researchers said the technique worked particularly well in children as they have such fertile imaginations.

It has been estimated that frequent stomach pain with no identifiable cause effects up to one in five children.

The research, published in Pediatrics, follows on from studies showing hypnosis is an effective treatment for a range of conditions known as functional abdominal pain, which includes things like irritable bowel syndrome.

Have You Got a Fat Brain?

By Kate Wighton / The Sun UK

Shocking pictures this week of the world's heaviest man divided opinion across the nation.

Some expressed sympathy for 70-STONE Paul Mason while others displayed revulsion, blaming gluttony for his size.

But scientists are now offering a new and highly controversial explanation for Paul, 48, of Ipswich, Suffolk, gaining so much weight that he is now classed as "super-obese".

They claim his brain may have been programmed from birth to want too much food, causing him to overeat all his life.

In other words, some of us have fat brains that make us crave high-calorie foods.

How to Tap the Enormous Power of Your Subconscious Mind

By Brian Tracy,
The League of Extraordinary Minds

You have available to you, right now, a power like a supercomputer that can enable you to solve any problem, overcome any obstacle and achieve any goal you can set for yourself.

This power has been used throughout history to take people from rags to riches, from poverty and obscurity to success and fame, from unhappiness and frustration to joy and self-fulfillment. And it can do the same for you.

This power has been called many things by many people in many places. It is the fundamental principle of most religions, philosophies and metaphysical teachings. It underlies much of psychology and is the cornerstone of all success and achievement.

In its simplest terms, it is called the "subconscious mind," although this is a misunderstanding because the true subconscious mind is merely a memory bank of senses and impressions that reacts automatically based on your previous experiences.

It has also been called the "universal subconscious mind" and the "collective unconscious."

The great Austrian psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, referred to this as the "superconscious mind." He felt that the collective wisdom and knowledge of all the ages was contained in this superconscious mind and was available to everyone.

Ralph Waldo Emerson referred to it as the "oversoul" and wrote that, "We live in the lap of an immense intelligence that, when we are in its presence, we realize that it is far beyond our human mind." Emerson, the great American transcendentalist, felt that all power and possibility for the average person came from using this mind on a regular basis.

Napoleon Hill, perhaps the greatest researcher on success of the 20th century, called this power the "infinite intelligence." After spending more than 20 years interviewing 500 of the most successful men and women alive in America at that time, he concluded that, without exception, their ability to tap into this higher form of infinite intelligence was the primary reason for their great success in life.

Surreal Experiences Boost Brain Power

By Kate Melville / Source: ScienceAGoGo

Psychologists at the University of California - Santa Barbara and the University of British Columbia have found that exposure to surrealism, by say, reading a book by Franz Kafka or watching a film by director David Lynch, enhances the cognitive mechanisms that oversee the implicit learning functions in the brain. The research was reported in the journal Psychological Science.

"The idea is that when you're exposed to a meaning threat - something that fundamentally does not make sense - your brain is going to respond by looking for some other kind of structure within your environment," said researcher Travis Proulx. "And, it turns out, that structure can be completely unrelated to the meaning threat."

Meaning, explains Proulx, is an expected association within one's environment. Fire, for example, is associated with extreme heat, and putting your hand in a flame and finding it icy cold would constitute a threat to that meaning.

The system, developed by a team at the University of Southampton, is said to be the first technology that would allow people to send thoughts, words and images directly to the minds of others, particularly people with a disability.

It has also been hailed as the future of the internet, which would provide a new way to communicate without the need for keyboards and telephones.

The Disease of Self Improvement

Dr. Robert Anthony,
Creator of the Rich Mind Life Strategy

Have you purchased self-improvement programs or read self-improvement books that you thought were going to change your life – but nothing really changed after your purchased them? You are not alone.

Self-Improvement is a False Concept

Billions of dollars are spent every year on self-improvement books
and programs. Why do we purchase these types of materials in the first place? It is because we are suffering from “The Disease of Self Improvement.”

The Disease of Self Improvement is the false notion that somehow
we are “deficient” and in order to be happy and successful we have to “improve” ourselves. The very act of trying to improve ourselves causes us to believe that there is something wrong with us in the first place.

The idea that there is something wrong with us is simply not true. So before we go any further -I want you to understand that – you cannot “improve” yourself because there is nothing wrong with you.

The only thing” wrong” is your beliefs ABOUT yourself and about the way life works.

A Mediterranean Diet Can Lower Depression

People who eat a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, vegetables and cereals may be less likely to develop depression, Spanish researchers have found.

The prevalence of mental disorders is lower in Mediterranean countries than in countries in Northern Europe. Dietary differences, such as use of olive oil, may be the reason, the researchers said.

To find out more, Almudena Sánchez-Villegas and colleagues at the clinic of the University of Navarra, in Pamplona, studied 10,094 healthy Spaniards who filled in questionnaires. Participants were followed for an average of 4½ years.

Those who followed the Mediterranean diet most closely had a more than 30 per cent reduction in risk of depression compared with those who ate diets with the fewest hallmarks of the Mediterranean diet, the team reported in the October issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

Touching Money Can Relieve Pain

Who cares if money can't buy you love? It can still be your BFF.

That's one of the surprising findings in a new Chinese-American academic research paper, "The Symbolic Power of Money," published in the journal Psychological Science.

Like any best friend forever, money demonstrated to researchers its ability to soothe us, reduce our sense of social exclusion and even lessen life's painful moments.

As researcher Xinyue Zhou of the psychology department at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, puts it, money acts as a substitute for another of life's pain buffers: love.

"I was surprised," says Katherine Vohs, co-author and marketing professor at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. "The findings were surprising because no one had connected the symbolic meaning of money to pain. The money wasn't buying the subjects more friends or a soothing cream; it was only psychologically helpful."

The Science of Serendipity

By Luke McKinney / Daily Galaxy

The luck of science might sound like the worst contradiction since kosher bacon, but we wouldn't be where we are today without fortunate accidents.

It'd be a significantly more boring world without the fantastically poor lab practices of Sir Alexander Fleming, the clumsiness of Edward Benedictus, or the suicidal carelessness of Alfred Nobel (resulting in penicillin, safety glass and gelignite).

That's why we have the word "serendipity" instead: it combines the accidental inspiration (or explosion) of luck with a mind capable of comprehending it.

Free will is not an illusion after all

By Anil Ananthaswamy / Source: New Scientist

In 1983, neuroscientist Benjamin Libet asked volunteers wearing scalp electrodes to flex a finger or wrist. When they did, the movements were preceded by a dip in the signals being recorded, called the "readiness potential". Libet interpreted this RP as the brain preparing for movement.

Crucially, the RP came a few tenths of a second before the volunteers said they had decided to move. Libet concluded that unconscious neural processesMovie Camera determine our actions before we are ever aware of making a decision.

Since then, others have quoted the experiment as evidence that free will is an illusion – a conclusion that was always controversial, particularly as there is no proof the RP represents a decision to move.

Subliminal Advertising Proven to Work

By Richard Alleyne, The Telegraph

Researchers found that briefly displaying words and images so quickly that people do not even consciously notice, does nevertheless change their thinking.

They found it was particularly effective with negative images and words which could alter a person’s mood.

The phrase subliminal advertising was coined in 1957 by the US market researcher James Vicary, who said he could get moviegoers to “drink Coca-Cola” and “eat popcorn” by flashing those messages onscreen for such a short time that viewers were unaware.

His claims led to fears that governments and cults would use the technique to their advantage and it was banned in many countries, including the UK.

Vicary later admitted he had fabricated his results.

But more than 50 years on British researchers have shown messages we are not aware of can leave a mark on the brain.

VIDEO: The One Minute Cure for Swine Flu

By Madison Cavanaugh / Author of The One-Minute Cure

ABC News has reported that the outbreak of swine flu virus last spring was only a preview of the alarming events to come. The full onslaught of swine flu in the United States will make itself painfully known during the upcoming flu season, starting fairly early in September.

It will most likely infect 30-40% of the U.S. population, or about 100 million people, according to flu expert Ira Longini, from the University of Washington's School of Public Health.

Initial supplies of the swine flu vaccine, which will be available sometime between mid-September to late October 2009, are expected to be very limited -- barely enough to inoculate the 160 million people who are at high risk of becoming infected. An even bigger concern is whether the fast-tracked vaccine is safe and effective -- since it's being rushed to market without the appropriate testing and safety evaluations.

It is a growing suspicion in the general population and among certain members of the medical community, including Dr. Joseph Mercola, the publisher of a popular self-titled natural health newsletter, that being exposed to this new swine flu vaccine might prove to be more dangerous than the swine flu itself.

A new book, The One-Minute Cure: The Secret to Healing Virtually All Diseases, offers compelling evidence that the swine flu virus can be rendered powerless in the body when one self-administers a natural oxygenating substance.

How to Protect Yourself from Universal Fears

From the free ebook: Freedom From Fear

Most of us have a set of unique fears that relate to our own lives, like concerns about loved ones, financial worries and so on; but there are also many “universal” fears – or perhaps you might call them “collective” fears – that are communicated to us through our environment.

These fears often relate to situations and events that leave us feeling vulnerable and defenseless, such as worldwide 'pandemics' (...and 'vaccines'), 'terrorist' attacks, economic and financial crises, and so on.

Not only do we see and hear constant references to these frightening scenarios in the media and from the people around us...

...the energy of collective fears also seeps into the very fabric of our reality (the quantum field) and continues to resonate around and within us.

Since we are all connected to the collective consciousness, we can actually absorb this “fear energy” as we go about our daily lives - even if we don’t pay attention to the media hype and mass hysteria.

Can Lucid Dreams Cure Psychosis?

By Kate Melville / Source: ScienceAGoGo

European researchers say that similarities in brain activity during lucid dreaming and psychosis indicate that previously discredited dream therapy could play a useful role in treating psychiatric conditions. Interestingly, the researchers back up their findings by theorizing about a potential evolutionary relationship between dreams and psychosis.

Lucid dreaming is a hybrid state between sleeping and being awake when the subject is aware that they are dreaming. It creates distinct patterns of electrical activity in the brain that have similarities to the patterns made by psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia.

According to researcher Ursula Voss, from the University of Frankfurt in Germany, the new findings confirm the connection by showing that while dreaming lucidly the brain is in a dissociated state. Dissociation involves losing conscious control over mental processes, such as logical thinking or emotional reaction. In some psychiatric conditions this state is also known to occur while people are awake.

Placebos Are Getting More Effective. Drugmakers Are Desperate to Know Why.

By Steve Silberman / Source: Wired.com

Merck was in trouble. In 2002, the pharmaceutical giant was falling behind its rivals in sales. Even worse, patents on five blockbuster drugs were about to expire, which would allow cheaper generics to flood the market. The company hadn't introduced a truly new product in three years, and its stock price was plummeting.

In interviews with the press, Edward Scolnick, Merck's research director, laid out his battle plan to restore the firm to preeminence. Key to his strategy was expanding the company's reach into the antidepressant market, where Merck had lagged while competitors like Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline created some of the best-selling drugs in the world. "To remain dominant in the future," he told Forbes, "we need to dominate the central nervous system."

His plan hinged on the success of an experimental antidepressant codenamed MK-869. Still in clinical trials, it looked like every pharma executive's dream: a new kind of medication that exploited brain chemistry in innovative ways to promote feelings of well-being. The drug tested brilliantly early on, with minimal side effects, and Merck touted its game-changing potential at a meeting of 300 securities analysts.

Behind the scenes, however, MK-869 was starting to unravel. True, many test subjects treated with the medication felt their hopelessness and anxiety lift. But so did nearly the same number who took a placebo, a look-alike pill made of milk sugar or another inert substance given to groups of volunteers in clinical trials to gauge how much more effective the real drug is by comparison. The fact that taking a faux drug can powerfully improve some people's health—the so-called placebo effect—has long been considered an embarrassment to the serious practice of pharmacology.

Ultimately, Merck's foray into the antidepressant market failed. In subsequent tests, MK-869 turned out to be no more effective than a placebo. In the jargon of the industry, the trials crossed the futility boundary.

George Clooney stars in Psychic Spy flick 'The Men Who Stare At Goats'

By Derek Elley / Source: Variety

A serendipitous marriage of talent in which all hearts seem to beat as one, "The Men Who Stare at Goats" takes Jon Ronson's book about "the apparent madness at the heart of U.S. military intelligence" and fashions a superbly written loony-tunes satire, played by a tony cast at the top of its game.

Recalling many similar pics, from "Dr. Strangelove" to "Three Kings," and the screwy so-insane-it-could-be-true illogic of "Catch-22," this is upscale liberal movie-making with a populist touch, in Coen brothers style. Enthusiastic welcome at Venice, likely to be echoed at Toronto, should translate into friendly biz Stateside in November.

Coming in at a tight, well-paced 93 minutes, Grant Heslov's second feature -- after his little-seen anti-corporate golf comedy, "Par 6" (2002) -- clearly benefits from his close working relationship with star George Clooney, following their writing collaboration on "Good Night, and Good Luck." It also benefits from the dense but pacey screenplay by Brit playwright Peter Straughan, whose credits include "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" and "Mrs. Ratcliffe's Revolution."
