Sex In Old Age Boosts Brain Power

People who perceive sex as unimportant in old age exhibit weaker cognitive functioning than those who prioritize sex, according to new research.

In a study published in the March issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, researchers discovered a link between one's perception of sexuality and performance on a number of cognitive tests. Although the link was evident in both men and women, it appeared stronger in women, researchers said.

Top 10 Geniuses Who Were/Are Horrible People

When someone is remembered as a genius, little else about them as a person is made public. Why would we care that Einstein cheated on his wife like, all the time? The guy invented gravity, he was awesome!

In a similar vein, there are other geniuses from a variety of respective fields that are, or were, straight-up awful people, despite how little attention people pay to that fact. People like …

The Power of Self-Healing and the Bio-Energetic Information System

That the mind affects the body to varying degrees has been a widely established fact for a long time. From simple pain relief to anesthetic-free surgery performed under the effect of hypnosis, there is countless evidence that shows the extent at which the mind can affect the body’s system and functioning. If all these cases were compiled under one body of knowledge or research, it would supersede all the medical archives till present.

Miracles With A Wave Of Your Hand

By Paul Wong, Creator of The Art of Neutrality

I know that sounds ridiculous... but the latest cutting-edge science of epigenetics has revealed a whole new paradigm of mind control...

Everyone knows about the power of the mind to affect amazing changes, sometimes miraculous. (They call it the "placebo effect.")

Yet, for some it's still difficult to understand what this placebo effect is -- and what it really means.

It means your mind has the power to heal itself, other people, plants, animals and much more.

To others, this seems like creating miracles, because they're so out of the ordinary when they actually do happen. But what if you could "flip a switch" and activate your own ability to heal yourself or even other people, from the inside-out? Imagine what you could do.

I stand behind this method 110%. It has worked for me and my family, and I continue to practice it daily and I've noticed my skills are improving.

This is way beyond anything you've seen, heard or believed in before. It is a priceless treasure.

If you've ever wondered if "energy healing" is legit, or wanted to experiment with conscious creation, manipulation and manifestation...

There is no better way I've found than this.

The Ultimate Guide to Changing Your Life

By James Altucher, Author of The Power of No

Ugh, then there are those times when I feel dead inside. I wake up early and swing on the pre-school swingset like a pervert.

The sun rises and instead of being orange and blue and beautiful it’s white and glaring and it’s a terrible terrible sunrise, burning everything inside of me.

Another day.

This is what happens to me when change is being born. At least for me: I’ve never avoided any of these steps.

Become Superhuman in 60 Days

There's an awesome upswing in the number of movies about upgraded humans. Think of X-men's Wolverine with his upgraded skeleton, Iron Man's nuclear-powered heart, Neo's downloaded martial art skills from The Matrix, and Captain America. Then there's a movie called Limitless about a man who takes a smart drug and ends up ruling the world, but not himself.

There's a scene in Captain America where a physically weak man walks into a chamber, and thanks to the miracle of technology, emerges transformed, and upgraded. We're led to believe it's science fiction, which it is, but it's not that far away from what you can do today.

If you set aside about 60 days and somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000 (or possibly as little as $8,000), you can upgrade just about every system in your body.

As a psychotherapist over the past 15 years I've seen countless patients from all walks of life. I've worked with patients ranging in age from teenage to elderly. Regardless of the demographic, educational level, or bank account, there have been questions and things I have asked patients to think about that have resonated and served as a catalyst for them to make impactful changes and improvements in their lives. Many of the questions are explored in my book Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days.

Could Magic Mushrooms Change the World?

British author Simon G Powell thinks he'd have had a slightly less eventful job had he never discovered magic mushrooms. "Probably working in a bookshop, or something," he says when I ask him to speculate.

Instead of chasing up late DVD returns, however, the 50-year-old has just released his second book about shrooms titled Magic Mushroom Explorer: Psilocybin and the Awakening Earth. Psilocybin—if you haven't already been informed via those glow-in-the-dark velvet posters at your local record shop—is a psychedelic tryptamine compound found in around 200 types of mushrooms worldwide. Or, in layman's terms, the stuff that makes you see weird shit when you eat them.

Brain-Altering Devices: Coming Soon to a Skull Near You

It feels like a long time since the Quantified Self movement caught us in its clutches. The first fitness bands and their corresponding apps sucked us in; the ability to monitor self-defined statistics made us feel more in control of ourselves. It's part narcissism, part hypervigilance.

But the most significant roadblock has been taking all the information we're self-quantifying and acting on it. You know you're taking 1,000 too few steps a day, eating 500 more calories than you should, and getting only a fraction of the outside time you need; actually doing something with the data is the hard part.

Motivation and habit change are hard, and no heart-monitoring bracelet is going to magically solve that problem.

60 Ways to Make Life A Little Bit Simpler

When we were young life was easier, right? I know sometimes it seems that way. But the truth is life still is easy. It always will be. The only difference is we’re older, and the older we get, the more we complicate things for ourselves.

You see, when we were young we saw the world through simple, hopeful eyes. We knew what we wanted and we had no biases or concealed agendas. We liked people who smiled. We avoided people who frowned. We ate when we were hungry, drank when we were thirsty, and slept when we were tired.

Zen Meditation Really Does Clear the Mind

By Charles Q. Choi / Special to LiveScience
The seemingly nonsensical Zen practice of "thinking about not thinking" could help free the mind of distractions, new brain scans reveal.

This suggests Zen meditation could help treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (so-called ADD or ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, major depression and other disorders marked by distracting thoughts.

In the last decade, there has been a resurgence of scientific research into meditation, due in part to the wide availability and increasing sophistication of brain-scanning techniques. For instance, scientists recently found that months of intense training in meditation can sharpen a person's brain enough to help them notice details they might otherwise miss.

"It is important that this type of research be conducted with high scientific standards because it carries a long-standing stigma — perhaps well-deserved? — of being wishy-washy," said researcher Giuseppe Pagnoni, a neuroscientist at Emory University in Atlanta. "Constructive skepticism should always be welcomed as a great sparring partner."

Pagnoni and his colleagues investigated Zen meditation, which Pagnoni himself has practiced while studying for his doctorate in Italy.

We all know about how-to, DIY, books for dummies, whatever you want to call them, pieces of literature. Many have proven to be extremely helpful, such as those dealing with computer programming or doing something simple such as knowing how to prepare a great Italian dinner for your family.

Whether you see this as a good or bad thing, there have most definitely been some pretty weird books that have been put in the reach of society’s hands. Here are the top 10 strangest how-to books that will most definitely leave you thinking “why?”

7 More Weird Self-Help Book Titles

By Karen Tay/ Source: Stuff

Self-help books are such funny, deeply personal things. You can get help for any aspect of life, from how to be happy to how to stop comfort-eating, heal your emotional self, take control of your life and the bread and butter of the self-help genre, relationship advice.

The relationship advice covers every relationship under the sun, from parents and children to romance, marriage, friendship and even how to get along with the in-laws without wanting to suffocate them with a pillowslip.

Today I thought we could get into some of the frivolous (or just plain freaky) self-help titles that can be found online - I admit that I have read none of them, I'm just making assumptions about content purely from the title and sometimes the blurb. Isn't that fun?

Can Plants Read Your Mind?

By James F. Coyle, Author of The 7 Real Mind Power Secrets

In 1966 a very strange event occurred. Cleve Backster, America's top polygraph (lie detector) expert was working late in his New York office. His secretary had installed a Dragon pot plant to brighten the office.

Backster noticed that the plant needed water, and on impulse attached the leads of a lie detector to one of the leaves. The lie detector measures skin resistance and Backster knew that it would indicate when water reached the actual leaf. He poured water over the root system and waited to see how long before this moisture reached the leaves.
Nothing happened. In fact after a while the instrument appeared to indicate less moisture in the leaf. The pen-tracing equipment attached to the lie detector was trending downwards with a fair amount of "saw tooth" motion.

Backster was puzzled as this was exactly the same response expected from a human being experiencing an emotional stimulus of short duration. He wondered if the plant could be displaying emotion.

Negative Thinking for Weight Loss

(Fair warning: - the material below is very controversial with many of our readers - I
receive more strongly opinionated letters on this than any other email)

Let's face it , your physical health is as important as your mental health for your overall well-being.

But mental and physical health go hand-in-hand... this is because getting in shape is just as much, if not more, a mental and emotional process as it a physical one.
Even if you get the physical results, you still need to make sure  that you make the changes needed in your mind and emotions so that your new behaviors stick.

How to Use Your Brain in the Future

The holiday of the future will still provide memories of strolls along sunny beaches, the sensation of sand between your toes and the peaceful rush of the ocean, but there will be one crucial difference.

You won't have ever actually been away - in fact you might not have even left your home.

Instead, people will download memories to their brains to make them feel as if they have been on a sun-kissed holiday.

That’s just one of the many realities we could face as we learn to manipulate the human mind, US physicist Dr Michio Kaku told MailOnline in an exclusive interview.
