How a Fake Guru Gets Real Followers

In 2010, Indian-American filmmaker Virkam Gandhi went to Phoenix and invented a spiritual workshop from scratch. That’s the premise of “KumarĂ©,” a documentary that Gandhi assembled out of his experience, in which he created a fake spiritual guru, replete with heavy accent, far-out proclamations, and a tiny legion of followers. Gandhi intended to prove a point, play a prank, or maybe some unseemly combination of both. That’s the appeal and the controversy of his provocative feature.

Does Your Child See Dead People?

Haley Joel Osment shocked millions of American moviegoers when he said, "I see dead people" in "The Sixth Sense."

Turns out, what's really shocking is how many kids can actually communicate with spooks -- or at least feel they do.

So says Caron Goode, a Fort Worth, Texas-based psychotherapist and author of the new book "Kids Who See Ghosts: How to Guide Them Through Fear" (Weiser Books).

Goode says that while some kids play with imaginary friends, there are others who are convinced they are being visited by spooks and apparitions.

Well, are they?

Depends on your upbringing, Goode says.

"

Are ghosts real? In some cultures they are and others they aren't," she says, adding that there are many factors that can make people feel they are seeing one -- including stress and their brain waves being in a "theta" or daydreaming state.

On the other hand, there are many people -- including Goode -- who have had experiences that they believe could only be caused by another entity and are not hallucinations.

The Secret Ingredients That Will Cause People to Give You Money and Make You Rich

By Anthony Norvell
Author of The Million Dollar Secret That Lies Hidden Within Your Mind

These Secret Ingredients Will Cause People to Give You Money and Make You Rich

1. Give something of value to the world. You want more of the material treasures of life, but are you willing to give something of value in return for them?

In checking the lives of over ten thousand famous and rich men and women, I found that the value they received in money, recognition, fame, or power, was directly in proportion to what they gave the world. Mental energy, time, service, personality, gifts, and creative talents, are all convertible into gold or other things of value. I discovered that the people who give things to the world that help the greatest number attract money easier then those who create for a small group.

The scientists, inventors, and creative minds, such as writers, dramatists, actors, and producers, seem to make the biggest fortunes, because they are bringing products, comforts, luxuries, entertainment and value to millions of people. Find what it is the world needs, and then set to work producing it for the greatest good of the greatest number of people and your fortune is assured.

Visualize Success If You Want to Fail

By David DiSalvo / Source: Forbes

If you have been paying any attention to the self help industry lo these many years, you know that “positive visualization” is a trademark best practice with few equals.  What could be simpler?  For one to succeed, one must visualize attaining the object of success. Few would quarrel with such perfunctory logic.

But could it be that the self-evidence of positive visualization is little more than a bookstore mirage? Though assumed true, it’s hard to say exactly why the practice works–if it works.

Enter the latest round of research aimed at testing the mettle of self-help platitudes.

Researchers Heather Kappes and Gabriele Oettingen, publishing in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, suggest to us that not only is positive visualization ineffective, it’s counterproductive. A practice proffered to help us succeed may do just the opposite.

How to Get Through Tough Times

By John Harricharan
Creator of The Power Pause

Today turned out to be one of those textbook beautiful days. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing softly and the temperature is just right — the perfect day. Even with all the challenges I have to face, I still look up at the sky and smile as the clouds chase one another across a "picture-perfect", blue background.

But I know that all the days to come will not be as beautiful and comfortable as this day is. Yesterday was dark and dreary, pierced with giant streaks of lightning, which generated thunder that rattled the windows.

Yes, I know that all the days that follow today will not be as bright as this one, nor as dark as yesterday. Some days will be better than others. Some will be worse. And I do not know which ones will or won't.

But this one thing I know: There will be change. There will be ups and there will be downs. That's how life is — there are good times and not so good times. The good times will not last forever. Every now and then, there will be rough times. But remember, even the worst times won't last either.

Is Independent Thinking a Psychological Disorder?

By Ethan A. Huff, staff writer, Natural News

Psychiatrists have been working on the fourth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and, in it, they hope to add a whole slew of new psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, many of these disorders are merely differences in personality and behavior among people.

The new edition may include "disorders" like "oppositional defiant disorder", which includes people who have a pattern of "negativistic, defiant, disobedient and hostile behavior toward authority figures." Some of the "symptoms" of this disorder including losing one's temper, annoying people and being "touchy".

Other "disorders" being considered include personality flaws like antisocial behavior, arrogance, cynicism or narcissism. There are even categories for people who binge eat and children who have temper tantrums.

Dogs Are Born With 'Canine Telepathy'

By Jennifer Viegas / Source: Discovery News

Dogs are so in tune with us that they can read our minds, according to a new Learning & Behavior study that also determined canines are probably born with the ability.

Practice makes perfect, however, so the more a dog hangs around humans, the better he or she becomes at "canine telepathy," which actually relies upon hyperawareness of the senses.

Those of us who have owned or been around dogs for any period of time know how well they often "get" us, sensing tiredness, depression, headaches or other maladies before we consciously exhibit any major outward signs of distress. Dogs can even detect when a person has cancer. They also seem to sense our joy and good health.

Think and Grow Fit

By Dave Osh, Creator of Anti-Aging Fitness

Have you read the book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill? This classic has been a best seller for more than 50 years. This book can change your life in a big way as it has changed many people lives, including me.

The most important highlight of this book is the understanding that your thoughts have an impact on your actual life. If you’re having negative thoughts, you will face negative consequences. If you’re having positive thoughts, you will get positive results.

The mechanism was discussed in previous ezines as the impact of the subconscious mind on the real world. But more important is that the subconscious mind is “programmable”. You can “install” new set of beliefs that will help you achieving what you desire in life using a technique Hill calls “autosuggestion”. Now a days, psychologists name the same old technique as “positive affirmations” or “self hypnosis”.

Lose Weight by Lying to Yourself

By Alasdair Wilkins / Source: LifeHacker

Looking to shed some pounds and take part in a massive act of self-deception? You can't fool your stomach into feeling full. However, you can fool your brain into enjoying healthy fruits and vegetables as much as high-fat indulgences.

It sounds maniacal, but a group of Yale researchers discovered that lying to people about food actually helps them lose weight.

The satiety of a food - how satisfied it leaves you, in other words - plays a big role in whether you're going to keep eating or not. But a food's perceived satiety might be quite different from how much it actually fills you up. The trick is to convince yourself that the low-fat, not particularly filling foods are actually rare treats that are just chock full of empty calories.

Can Magnets Cure Depression?

By Clare Wilson / Source: New Scientist

Anyone who remembers high-school physics knows that a fluctuating magnetic field can induce an electrical current. That's the principle behind transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), where an electromagnet is held over the head and pulsed rapidly. Depending on the frequency of the pulses, this can either enhance or suppress activity in neurons a few centimetres under the skull.

TMS is seen as one of the safer forms of brain stimulation, as it requires no surgery. Yet it is not completely risk free: some people experience pain in the scalp, headaches or facial spasms. More concerning were the 10 cases of seizures triggered by TMS in the first few years of its use.

Fortunately these became very rare once those administering TMS learned to limit the intensity and frequency of the stimulation and give patients regular breaks in treatment. TMS was leapt on as the perfect research tool.

Your Brain Will Be the Battlefield of the Future

Rapid advances in neuroscience could have a dramatic impact on national security and the way in which future wars are fought, US intelligence officials have been told.

In a report commissioned by the Defense Intelligence Agency, leading scientists were asked to examine how a greater understanding of the brain over the next 20 years is likely to drive the development of new medicines and technologies.

They found several areas in which progress could have a profound impact, including behaviour-altering drugs, scanners that can interpret a person's state of mind and devices capable of boosting senses such as hearing and vision.

On the battlefield, bullets may be replaced with "pharmacological land mines" that release drugs to incapacitate soldiers on contact, while scanners and other electronic devices could be developed to identify suspects from their brain activity and even disrupt their ability to tell lies when questioned, the report says.

How I Lost Weight While I Slept

By Andrew Levy
 / Daily Mail UK

As weight loss plans go, it sounds incredible - shift those stubborn pounds simply by dreaming about it.

Yet one woman claims the method helped her lose a stone in a month and eventually drop from a size 22 to a 14.

Suzie Gibbs had seen her weight balloon to 14st 7lb following years of avoiding the gym and a succession of failed diets.

After a chiropractor told her that she was risking a lifetime of back pain unless she lost weight, the mother of two allowed herself to be hypnotised into imagining she was exercising while she slept.

She says that within a month she had lost a stone. Since then she has lost a further two-and-a-half stones through the hypnotherapy and a new-found enthusiasm for exercise.

The transformation involved three hypnotherapy sessions where she had to visualise herself exercising and doing sit-ups.

Nazis Tried to Create Talking Super Dogs

Source: The Telegraph

The Germans viewed canines as being almost as intelligent as humans and attempted to build an army of fearsome 'speaking' dogs, extraordinary new research shows.

Hitler hoped the clever creatures would learn to communicate with their SS masters - and he even had a special dog school set up to teach them to talk.

The incredible findings show Nazi officials recruited so-called educated dogs from all over Germany and trained them to speak and tap out signals using their paws.

One mutt was said to have uttered the words 'Mein Fuhrer' when asked who Adolf Hitler was.

Another 'spoke' by tapping letters of the alphabet with his paws and was said to have speculated about religion and learnt poetry.

7 Bizarre Holidays: Stargates, Vortex Spots, Portals and Energy Worm Holes You Can Visit

By Timothy Green Beckley / Source: Forteans West

Ancient people knew that wherever the earth’s energy gathered into a vortex was a sacred place. They knew – and scientists are beginning to understand once again today – that we are surrounded by a tremendous amount of energy that has been provided for us by the Creator.

It’s available for the asking if we could only learn to harness the forces of the universe in a positive way. Some refer to it as the cosmic flow. We could enter Stargates, learning to travel through space and time, and perhaps power our homes and automobiles at a fraction of the cost of what we spend today.

There are certain places you can “feel it in the air” – where the atmosphere prickles with electricity making your hair stand on end. There are certain sacred spots where the earth vibrates at a higher level. These are earth’s vortex regions, its gateways to other dimensions.
