Top 5 Phenomena That Offer Evidence For An Afterlife

In the modern age, the debate over the possibility that our consciousness might survive the physical death of our body is often reduced to a false dichotomy of science vs religion.

As such, scientists sadly often ignore and ridicule reports of strange phenomena from those who have approached, and in some cases gone beyond, the threshold of death, even though such experiences have a profound effect upon those who undergo them.

Do these phenomena offer evidence that we might live on in some way past the demise of our physical selves? Here's a list of five areas, taken from the book Stop Worrying! There Probably is an Afterlife, which suggest that it might just be so...

What Are the Secrets of Longevity?

By Denise Winterman
Source: BBC News Magazine

The quest to live longer is one of humanity's oldest dreams and three isolated communities seem to have stumbled across the answer. So what can they teach us about a longer life?

Something remarkable links the remote Japanese island of Okinawa, the small Sardinian mountain town of Ovodda and Loma Linda in the US. People live longer in these three places than anywhere else on earth.

At an age when the average Briton is predicted to die - 77 years for men and 81 for women - inhabitants of these three places are looking forward to many more years of good health. Often they're still working in jobs as demanding as heart surgery.

Okinawa has a population of one million and of those 900 are centenarians, four times higher than the average in Britain or America. Even more remarkably, Ovodda is the only region in the world where as many men as women live to be 100 years of age, bucking the global trend.

But what is even more intriguing is that each community is distinct from the others and raises a different theory as to why residents live longer. In all three communities scientists have dedicated themselves to trying to uncover these unique secrets. So what can we learn from the towns where people live the longest?

Your Brain Sees What It Is Programmed To See

The brain is a hunk of flesh. Amazing transceiver, but working on the fleshly side, like our bodies. It interprets. It is not spirit, it is alive but not life. It is not perception, in any way, shape or form. Yet it perceives at its own level.

We, however, are consciousness. And here we have bodies with brains.
In our current form, our nervous system consists of our brains, our spinal cord, and all the attached nerves, however complex and energetic it may be. It works for us, not us for it. The two ARE separable. We joined up when we arrived, and we'll detach when we leave.

The heart and other chakras are more spiritual centers. Right now we're talking brain and central nervous system.

Bizarre Experiments with Telepathic Dogs

By Nick Redfern, Author of The World's Weirdest Places

For decades, the US Defense intelligence Agency has delved deep into the mysterious worlds of psychic phenomena, extra-sensory perception, and the paranormal powers of the human brain.

But the DIA has also focused on the mind-skills of other living creatures beyond just us, the Human Race. Dogs have been a particular favorite of the DIA, and even more so the many psychic hounds of the former Soviet Union.

It was 1975 when the strange canine caper kicked-off, and, unsurprisingly, it was initiated to try and secretly determine if studying the presumed supernatural skills of Soviet dogs might provide the US Government with some sort of military-based and espionage-themed advantage over the Russians.

Stroke Turns Man Gay

Following a stroke, Chris Birch's personality and sexuality altered dramatically. Now he is trying to rediscover who he is and why these changes may have happened.

"It's like looking at somebody else, but with my face only younger, and in all fairness, if I met myself I'd probably carry on walking."

Looking at past pictures of himself, 27-year-old Chris Birch struggles to remember or identify with his old self. He used to be a 19-stone, beer-swilling, party-loving rugby fan from the Welsh valleys, the life and soul of a party. He worked in a bank and loved sport and motorbikes.

After a freak accident in 2011, he says he underwent a big change to his personality. He believes that he has gone from being straight to gay.

Happiness Brings You Money, Study Finds

Scientists may have discovered the secret to avoiding the fiscal cliff: Happiness.
Regardless of whether money can buy happiness, being happy may actually make you more money down the road, new research finds.

People who express more positive emotions as teenagers and greater life satisfaction as young adults tend to have higher incomes by the time they're 29, according to a study published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The difference was so great that when measuring life satisfaction on a 5-point scale, a 1-point jump at age 22 made a $2,000 difference in income down the line. Between the gloomiest and the happiest brackets, that amounts to an $8,000 earnings swing.

The Secret Life of Telepathic Plants

"My plant read my mind!" On February 2nd, 1966 this realization forever changed the life of the FBI and CIA's foremost polygraph researcher, and reintroduced modern science to the sentient nature of our universe.

On that date the brilliant and disciplined mind of Cleve Backster conceived an irrefutable paradigm-busting scientific protocol. With straightforward electronics that a student or garage-level scientist can replicate, he proved to humans that their thoughts and emotions affect the behavior of their own and other living cells.

For millennia traditional peoples have known that all life forms-plants, animals and even single cells-are not only sentient and intelligent, but that they communicate with one another. This fact got lost a few centuries ago between the mechanistic focus of industrial science and the modern human view of reality that ascribed consciousness only to the human brain.

A few 20th century scientific pioneers, like Chandra Bose in India and the Kirlians in the former Soviet Union, had earlier developed technology to demonstrate energy fields and basic emotional responses in plants and animals. Backster's experimental work took the next step and documented a heretofore unrecognized cellular level of interspecies biocommunication.

Nine Things Successful People Do Differently

By Heidi Grant Halvorson

Why have you been so successful in reaching some of your goals, but not others? If you aren't sure, you are far from alone in your confusion. It turns out that even brilliant, highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to understanding why they succeed or fail.

The intuitive answer — that you are born predisposed to certain talents and lacking in others — is really just one small piece of the puzzle. In fact, decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do.

Why Can't We Use Drugs (for brain research)?

Imagine being an astronomer in a world where the telescope was banned. This effectively happened in the 1600s when, for over 100 years, the Catholic Church prohibited access to knowledge of the heavens in a vain attempt to stop scientists proving that the earth was not the center of the universe.

'Surely similar censorship could never happen today,' I hear you say—but it does in relation to the use of drugs to study the brain. Scientists and doctors are banned from studying many hundreds of drugs because of outdated United Nations charters dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the banned drugs include cannabis, psychedelics and MDMA (now widely known as ecstasy).

Four Mind Power Books Every Young Business Owner Must Read

There are four books that changed my understanding of the way we think, and what motivates our success. These four books showed me how so many of our actions are rooted in subconscious thoughts and how understanding this fact can drive accomplishment.

Throughout my career, I have maintained one objective: to help young people--particularly those at risk--to achieve financial independence, stability and ultimately success.

In addition to the business skills and tools that programs like NFTE provide, I think young people can realize their success by understanding the power of their own minds and the importance of remaining resolute in your work.

Do Dreams Cure or Cause Depression?

Sleep plays a major role in mood regulation; that's a truism that is behind every mother's call for "time to go to bed!" But while the links between dreams and depression are well documented, the role of dreams in maintaining mental health is still one of the most confusing components in the function of sleep.

In the 1970s, psychologists noted that people suffering from depression also report more dreams than average. In fact, people who are clinically depressed may dream three or four times as much. The quality of REM dreams (also called "paradoxical sleep") is different too: more intense emotions, more negative themes, more nightmares, and more unpleasant dreams, in general.

It's insult on top of injury that these unpleasant dreams are often mixed with insomnia and less slow-wave sleep: that "deep" sleep that leaves us feeling restored and refreshed. Rather than waking up refreshed, the clinically depressed dreamer wakes up feeling like he has been in battle all night long and now has to get up and do it again in waking life.

Why Are You Whining About the Meaninglessness of Life?

In “The Matrix”, Morpheus asks Neo “have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream – how could you tell the difference between the dream world and the real world?”

There’s a whole metaphor there about reality and delusion et cetera and it’s been done to death by everyone who thinks they’re a smart guy on the internets, but almost nobody understands the flipside of this coin and asks the counterpart question, which is what I’m going to ask you now:

Have you ever had a dream where you realized you were dreaming while you were still dreaming?

Some people never have, some people have on occasion, and to some people (like the undersigned) it happens all the time. This post will probably be easier for you and give you more if you have some experience of what I’m talking about, but if you don’t I’m going to walk you through it and you can probably follow just fine. It’s not a contest or an achievement to lord over anybody.

The Technology the Government Tried to Ban

By Bradley Thompson / Source: Subliminal Power 2.0

In the 1950s, the CIA stumbled upon a startling discovery... by exposing human brains to 'secret' messages, it was possible to re-engineer a person's thinking without them being aware it was happening.

This self-improvement 'back door' was classified so powerful, the US government actually tried to BAN it in advertising -- for fear it'd give companies an unfair advantage!

But what if you could use this technology to improve your thinking, engineer your emotions and crank up your intelligence, IQ and confidence... by activating it *on purpose*?

Over 70,000 were part of a 9 year experiment to see if it was possible. The results were SHOCKING.

What if there was a way you could activate your brain like a switch?

Well, according to Olympic Medalists, the US Army and Microsoft, there is.

We ALL have this awesome power within us, most people just have no clue how to turn it on, or where to find the right switch!

Today, over one million people are using software (yes, I said software) to gain access to their inner "control panel" and are using it to lose weight, increase their IQ, drop any bad habit, remove fears, eliminate their tension and stress...

Without:
* hypnosis
* meditation
* reading
* magic spells

Human Super Senses to Become a Reality

Mankind no longer needs to rely on evolution to obtain new sensory perceptions and abilities.

Society has long dreamed of possessing superhuman powers like those wielded by the characters we see in comics and movies, abilities that would seem to be rooted firmly in the realms of science fiction.

Some scientists however believe that a future in which it will be possible to posses such powers may be a lot nearer than most people think and that research being carried out today could be instrumental in making it happen.

Quantum Suicide and Quantum Immortality

Quantum Suicide is a thought experiment that was originally conceived in 1987 by Hans Moravec but later independently developed by Max Tegmark in 1998.

It is one of those ideas that really squeezes your brain juices in an effort to produce an elixir of profound contemplation.

The idea goes a little something like: get yourself one unobservable room, a healthy physicist and death inducing device i.e. a gun. However it so happens that this gun contains a moving particle and only fires when the particle is moving counterclockwise. There is a 50% chance of this.

Top 10 Old School Self-Help Books

The self-help industry today generates literally thousands of books, seminars, and audio programs, on which Americans spend more than $11 billion yearly.

Most self-help programs are based in "positive thinking" – the principle that your thoughts shape your destiny. This message grew out of mental-healing and Transcendentalist tracts of the mid-nineteenth century, and attained mass appeal in works such as Norman Vincent Peale's 1952 The Power of the Positive Thinking.

Critics generally view positive thinking as namby-pamby nonsense. But the philosophy has produced ideas that are deeply useful, even profound. You probably believe some of them already. This list considers the most compelling and overlooked expressions of this practical philosophy. While many of these books proved too esoteric in tone to attain the mass appeal of Dale Carnegie and Joel Osteen, they are a treasure of serviceable ideas and are all still available today.

The Psychopath's Bible for the Extreme Individual

Book Review of The Psychopath's Bible

"Do not take anything in this book literally! Wait, on second thought, take it all literally!" – Joseph Matheny's quote on the back of the book.

Do you ever wonder what would be possible if you decided to completely rid yourself of limitations – social, psychological, and otherwise? Would you use such methods to assist your fellow beings, or to manipulate them for your own ends? A book for such desire exists, and to be Limitless is the goal of all who persist through it. First-time contributor Donovan, here, to share my thoughts on Christopher Hyatt's work, The Psychopath's Bible.

The Car of the Future Will Read Your Mind

How many times have you had a close-call after being distracted behind the wheel?

According to road safety charity, Brake, probably far more often than you'd like to think.

The group estimates that a huge 22 per cent of all crashes are caused by driver inattention.

A new car, however, hopes to solve this problem by using a driver's brain waves to start the engine and keep it going.

The concept, developed by the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia and Emotiv, is currently being tested in a Honda i40.

The Attention Powered Car features a neuro headset that connects brain activity to the car's engine through customised software.

How to Change Your Life While You Sleep and Wake Up More Powerful

The average human brain requires 7-10 hours of nightly slumber.
Over your lifetime, that adds up to between 22 and 31 YEARS of your life spent snoozing, unconscious to the world.

But the latest research has revealed that much of this time may be *entirely wasted*.

In fact -- scientists have discovered that during sleep, a "unique" window of learning opens that allows your brain to absorb and assimilate new information like a sponge.

Yet - most people are NOT taking advantage of it!

That's why I'm so excited to reveal a 'secret weapon' that turns this "dead" time into your most powerful, deep and potent mind-altering self-development practice to date.

It's called Sleep Programming.

Productivity Tricks for the Neurotic, Manic-Depressive, and Crazy (like me)

By Tim Ferris, Author of The 4-Hour Work Week

A few months ago, I had a birthday party.

A dozen friends and I gathered for several days of wonderful sun, beach, and catching up. On the last day, I didn't get up until 11:30am, knowing full well that the last remaining friends were leaving at 12 noon.

I was afraid of being alone.

Like a child, I hid my head under the covers (literally) and hit snooze until reality couldn't be postponed any further.

But…why am I telling you this?…

Can We Cure Drug Addiction By Erasing Memories?

Missing memories are the stuff of concept-heavy movies and messy weekends. But what if you could wipe out selected events in your head without damaging the rest of your brain?

It sounds like a plot point in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but a group of scientists at the nonprofit Scripps Research Institute is working on erasing certain memories as a way to combat addiction. Courtney Miller is leading the research and she has high hopes for the practice, as long as it's used ethically. I reached out to her to learn more.

Top 10 Ways to Look and Be Smarter

Whether you're trying to survive an intensive college schedule or just want to seem smarter in front of your friends, you can do a lot of things to both look and be smarter.

Here are ten simple tricks for boosting your real (and perceived) brain power.

10. Read Faster and Better

Obviously, one of the best ways to boost your intelligence is to read more! You can read faster (and thus consume more knowledge) by getting your speech mechanism out of the equation. So give your mouth something to do, like eating, humming, or chewing gum to get through that stuff quickly. Then, take some time to absorb and reflect on what you read to keep it in your memory. Whether it's War and Peace or just the Wikipedia Random button, you'll be surprised by how much more you learn when you're reading not just fast, but well.

How to Earn Straight A's

By Steve Pavlina

When I started high school, I decided I was going to become a straight-A student, even though I'd never done that before. It seemed like an interesting goal to pursue as a 14-year old. Since school was the center of my life back then, I figured I might as well succeed at it.

On my first freshman English essay, I got a C+. I was a bit miffed. I thought I had done my best.

Instead of interpreting that C+ to mean that I was going to fail at my goal, I asked, "Why didn't I get an A? What would an A essay need to look like?"

Whenever I got less than an A in a class assignment, I kept asking, "What do I need to do differently to get an A?"

Free Seminar: The Secret Brain Trick for Automatic Success

By Natalie Ledwell / Source: Mind Movie Matrix

Hi! I'm Natalie Ledwell. You may know me from Mind Movies or maybe one of the seminars I have spoken at.

Now I have a question for you today. Have you ever wondered why some people seem to always have it easy in life? They get the perfect job without even really looking for it or can make sales without even trying? Maybe they can attract an awesome mate despite not being a very nice person or can eat anything they want without ever getting fat.

If those kinds of people bother you, you're not alone. Now there was a time where they used to infuriate me too… until I asked myself, "Why don't I see what they're doing differently so I can have the same benefits?" I'd been working so hard my whole life and I thought, "Well, I might as well try something new."

In fact, some of the most hardworking, talented, and good-natured people I know barely can pay their rent or put food on the table. It almost seems like there's an invisible wall blocking them from really achieving their dreams. Have you ever felt like that?

The Man Who Remembered The Future

Did sci-fi author Philip K. Dick see the future? Could he literally have been precognitive? This is one of the conclusions of a new biography by the consciousness theorist Anthony Peake.

It's been over thirty years since the writer's death, but fascination for the work of Philip K. Dick continues to grow with more than ten major Hollywood movies based on his novels and short stories, including Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report and The Adjustment Bureau.

Peake's new biography shines further light on the man himself, attempting to both sift the details of his complex personal life and penetrate the unique inner life that fuelled his work with something that may have been more than merely imagination.

The Universe Is Evolving Like A Giant Brain

The idea of the universe as a 'giant brain' has been proposed by scientists - and science fiction writers - for decades.

But now physicists say there may be some evidence that it's actually true. In a sense.

According to a study published in Nature's Scientific Reports, the universe may be growing in the same way as a giant brain - with the electrical firing between brain cells 'mirrored' by the shape of expanding galaxies.

The results of a computer simulation suggest that "natural growth dynamics" - the way that systems evolve - are the same for different kinds of networks - whether its the internet, the human brain or the universe as a whole.

How to Use the Power of Gratitude to Change Your Life

By Valerie Dawson, Certified Hypnotherapist
Creator of
Hypnotic Visualization Guided Audios

Most often when people use gratitude to attract abundance, they focus on a general feeling of gratitude – about anything – because just feeling a sense of gratitude immediately brings them into energetic alignment with increased abundance. This is a very effective way to use the essence of gratitude, but it's not the only way.

Today we're going to explore another way that is even more specific to the outcomes and experiences you wish to create in your life.

How to Develop a Hypnotic Sleeper Agent

By Dantalion Jones, Author of Mind Control 101

Amid all the conspiracy theories one of the most feared is that there exist “sleeper agents” in our society who are programmed to come into service when they are triggered by a phone call or key word.

These alleged sleeper agents don’t even know they are programmed to become saboteurs, soldiers, suicide bomber, etc because of the thoroughness of their programming. They are the feared “Manchurian Candidate” that the movies portray.

The question is “Are they real?”

If they are true sleeper agents there is no way of telling until they are activated.  One can however theorize exactly how they are made.

This Is Your Brain On Money

Money has the power to stir emotions and create drama fitting for a Shakespearean play. A raise in your salary gives you joy, but misery comes if you gamble your money away. You don't mind risk taking because it paves the way to future success, but you're panic-stricken when you lose money invested in stocks.

Then there is greed, one of the seven deadly sins in early Christian writings and the subject of a painting -- "The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things" -- that depicts greed as misers being boiled in a pot of gold.

Your brain wants you to be safe and alive, so it makes you go after basic human needs like food, shelter, love and the safety of a social group, i.e., family. But when you want to make money -- which often involves risk taking and calculating probabilities -- your brain doesn't necessarily feel safe.

Our brains are cravers: chocolate, ice cream and even alcohol. The brain doesn't want to bother with futuristic, "maybe" rewards. But the wise and smart parts of our brain will say: "Hold on, wait a minute, let's reassess" before we make a decision.

Silly Superstitions Can Reverse Bad Luck, Scientists Claim

Superstitious people may have been right all along as knocking on wood really could protect you against bad luck, scientists claim.

Those who perform long-held rituals such as throwing salt over their shoulder are less likely to worry about ill-fortune, according to researchers from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Superstitions reverse perceived bad fortune by making participants believe ill-fortune was less likely to happen.

Professor Jane Risen, of Chicago University, said knocking on wood seems to create the sense bad luck is being pushed away.

Whiners Are Bad For Your Brain

Do you hate it when people complain? It turns out there's a good reason: Listening to too much complaining is bad for your brain in multiple ways, according to Trevor Blake, a serial entrepreneur and author of Three Simple Steps: A Map to Success in Business and Life

In the book, he describes how neuroscientists have learned to measure brain activity when faced with various stimuli, including a long gripe session.

"The brain works more like a muscle than we thought," Blake says. "So if you're pinned in a corner for too long listening to someone being negative, you're more likely to behave that way as well."

Even worse, being exposed to too much complaining can actually make you dumb. Research shows that exposure to 30 minutes or more of negativity -- including viewing such material on TV -- actually peels away neurons in the brain's hippocampus. "That's the part of your brain you need for problem solving," he says. "Basically, it turns your brain to mush."

'Sex Slave' Hypnotist Jailed

A self-taught hypnotist who put a woman under his trance, telling her he was her master and she was his sex slave, has been jailed for degrading her.

Instead of helping his vulnerable victim with weight-loss and anxiety issues, ex-RAF man Timothy Porter took advantage of his skills to make her fondle her breasts while he committed a sex act on himself.

The grandfather, who had an unblemished record in the services spanning 24 years, was jailed for 18 months at Teesside Crown Court.

Top 10 Amazing Examples of Mind Over Matter

While we often think of our bodies and minds as two distinct entities, it turns out they are much more entwined than we might assume.

Researchers are continually finding evidence that the brain has a distinct power to manipulate the body's physiology.

As these 10 examples show, the mind/body connection can work in our favor or detriment, depending on our knowledge of a situation and our ability to control our thoughts.

This Simple Video Can (Sorta) Predict Your IQ

OK, you want to try it? Then watch this video — the whole thing, preferably full-screen — before you read any further. Got it? Good. Let's see how smart you (maybe) are.

In a study run by researchers at the University at Rochester and published in Biology, researchers had subjects watch that same video you just did. They also had them take a standard IQ test. What they found was that people who had an easier time seeing movement in the smaller bars as opposed to the larger ones had — drum roll please — higher IQs. Generally.

Why? That's a little tougher to explain. The theory seems to be that people with higher IQs tend to filter out the larger fields of bars kind of like filtering out background noise. And filtering out background noise and focusing on little things happens to be something that comes naturally to folks with high IQs.

Of course, having a high IQ doesn't mean you are "smart." IQ is obviously a very specific kind of measurement whereas overall intelligence is something a bit more nebulous. More than anything, the study just reveals another little quirk of how the human brain works and provides a point of insight, rather than cracking open the whole idea of "smartness."

Still, it's an interesting little experiment, and one you can run on yourself, on your own. And then completely dismiss when it doesn't give you the results you wanted to see.
