Eureka! How the Brain Has 'Aha' Moments

By Sharon Begley
Source: Newsweek

Think of one word that can form a compound word with “sauce,” “pine” and “crab.”

I’ll wait . . . .

Time’s up: did you come up with “apple,” to make “applesauce,” “pineapple” and “crabapple”? OK, let’s consider that a warmup. Try the same exercise—finding a word to make a compound word—with “bump,” “step” and “egg.”

Did “goose” pop into your head?

One more: for “back” “clip” and “wall.” . . . .It’s “paper,” for “paperback,” “paperclip” and “wallpaper.”

If you’re like many people, you tried to solve each problem methodically, first finding a word that would go with, say, “sauce” and then trying it out with “pine” and “crab.” But if you’re like most people in a more important way, if you solved these brain-teasers you did so not through this grind-through-the-possibilities approach, but through insight. That is, you thought a little and then, wham, the answer suddenly hit you.

Scientists have approximately no idea how this happens.

This Article Doesn't Exist

By Ken Korczak

What are you worried about right now?

Well, it’s an almost guarantee that you are worried about nothing, for the very reason that you don’t exist!

You have no worries because you have no mind or body or life to worry with — it’s all an illusion. No worries, but more significantly, no worrier.

If you think this sounds like utter nonsense, some of the most brilliant scientists, philosophers and theological thinkers of our century would disagree with you. Science and math suggest that we humans don’t exist, (even though there is really no math or science — more illusions!)

The advent of quantum mechanics and modern physics increasingly imply that our existence as human beings is a kind of persistent illusion. We are under the false assumption that we’re people, we only imagine we have bodies and brains, and minds functioning inside those brains.

Don't Take Your Thoughts Too Seriously

By Eckhart Tolle
Author of The Power of Now

Most people spend their entire life imprisoned within the confines of their own thoughts. They never go beyond a narrow, mind-made, personalized sense of self that is conditioned by the past.

In you, as in each human being, there is a dimension of consciousness far deeper than thought. It is the very essence of who you are. We may call it presence, awareness, the unconditioned consciousness. In the ancient teachings, it is the Christ within, or your Buddha nature.

Finding that dimension frees you and the world from the suffering you inflict on yourself and others when the mind-made "little me" is all you know and runs your life. Love, joy, creative expansion, and lasting inner peace cannot come into your life except through that unconditioned dimension of consciousness.

If you can recognize, even occasionally, the thoughts that go through your mind as simply thoughts, if you can witness your own mental-emotional reactive patterns as they happen, then that dimension is already emerging in you as the awareness in which thoughts and emotions happen -- the timeless inner space in which the content of your life unfolds.

Actually, Happiness Isn't Within

By Eric Weiner
Author of The Geography of Bliss

A new year is upon us, and the self-help industrial complex is in full swing, pestering us to slim down, bulk up, become a new you, a better you, a happier you. Yes, it's all about you. The 1970s may have been the "Me Decade," but the naught years are shaping up to be the "You Decade."

There is, it turns out, little difference between You and Me. Both outlooks reflect a firmly held and particularly American belief that happiness lies deep inside the inner you, or me, or whatever.

The self-help industry has it wrong. Social scientists studying happiness (or subjective well-being, to use the academic term) have found that external factors – quality of government, social interactions and, to an extent, money – determine our happiness more than anything else. In other words, happiness does not reside inside of you. Happiness is out there.

Can the 'Will to Live' Hold Off Death?

By Stuart Jeffries
Source: The Guardian

One of Hugh Montgomery's first patients, when he started working as an intensive-care doctor in 1989, was a 94-year-old woman who had suffered a heart attack while ballroom dancing. "She was a terrific, feisty old dear and we got on really well," recalls Montgomery. "But she ended up getting complications and falling unconscious. It was just a matter of time before she died.

"Every morning when I came into work, I would ask the nurses if she'd died, and they would say no. Then the thought crossed my mind that maybe she was hanging on for me.

"So I drew the curtains and said to her: 'I don't know if you can hear me, but if you're hanging on for me, you don't have to.' She stopped breathing right then. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I don't think so."

Montgomery relates the story because he is convinced that there is such a thing as the will to live and, by extension, a will to die. "I've seen this kind of thing happen so much in my work over the years that I don't believe it is a coincidence."

The Tom Cruise Indoctrination Video Scientology Tried To Suppress

You have to watch this video. It shows Tom Cruise, with all the wide-eyed fervor that he brings to the promotion of a movie, making the argument for Scientology, the bizarre 20th-century religion.

Making the argument is an understatement. The Hollywood actor, star of movies such as Mission Impossible, is a complete fanatic. "When you're a Scientologist, and you drive by an accident, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you're the only one who can really help... We are the way to happiness. We can bring peace and unite cultures."

There's much much more. Let me put it this way: if Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah's couch was an 8 on the scale of scary, this is a 10.

This video's been passed around privately by reporters and writers investigating Cruise's ties with Scientology. Most reporters have been wary of taking on the Scientologists, because they have a history of both litigation, and the harassment of critics.

The publication of Andrew Morton's biography of Tom Cruise, which claims he is the second most powerful person in the cult, has seems to have opened the floodgates. Several indoctrination videos were available on Google Video, on Sunday, and showcased on Gawker, before being removed by the person who had originally posted them.

Yesterday, for a few hours, the clip of Tom Cruise discussing his beliefs as a Scientologist appeared on Youtube, and was republished by Radar and Defamer. That video is no longer available, most likely after the Church of Scientology sent in a copyright infringement notice. Gawker is now hosting a copy of the video; it's newsworthy; and we will not be removing it.

You Get What You Expect

By Dr. Robert Anthony
Creator of Rapid Manifestation

Whatever you expect to happen is determined by the thoughts you dwell upon plus the intensity of the emotions behind those thoughts. It is worth repeating that our subconscious does not question the validity of the data we present to it. It merely processes it and attracts to us what we believe to be true.

If we are using imagery to change habit patterns, we must see ourselves acting and reacting the way we want to be in the future. It doesn't matter how we acted today or yesterday.

Once our subconscious gets hold of our new thought, our brain-mind, functioning together through our central nervous system, will take over and we will automatically assume the new behavior patterns. The key is to be able to picture or imagine the end result so vividly that it appears real.

We have learned that our subconscious mind functions in terms of goals or end results. Once the subconscious has accepted an idea, you can absolutely depend upon it to take you to that goal. If we will supply the end results, our subconscious will supply the "how to." It will show us how to reach that end result.

Think of the end results in terms of present possibilities. They must be seen so clearly that they seem real to your brain and nervous system. The ultimate aim of affirmation and visualization is to evoke the feeling that the goal is already achieved.

Feel as though it has already been achieved and your imagery will pull you toward the end result that you desire. Imagine it in as much detail as possible. Keep using the imaging process over and over again for the same goal. In the beginning, don't worry about whether you are putting in enough detail. Every time you visualize you will automatically incorporate more and more detail.

Always put yourself in the picture. See yourself involved in the activities of your goal. If you do not put yourself in the picture, you may not be in the end result. Suppose you want a new car - let's say a new BMW. You visualize the car and faithfully infuse your imagery with emotion, detail and repetition. And then, all of a sudden, a new BMW comes into your life. You look out the window of your house and your neighbor is driving a new BMW! You now have new BMW in your life, but you are not in it! So, make sure you identify yourself with your goal.

All successful individuals have started with a picture held in their mind. They visualized and affirmed what they wanted to be, to do and to have. And then they instructed their subconscious with clarity and repetition.

The 3 Secrets to a Stress-Free Life

By Jafree Oswald and Margot Zaher
Creators of The Secrets of Manifesting

A stress free being is aware that he or she knows no destination other than Now. They experience no hesitation, procrastination or postponement of their life, ever!

Why should there be? They love life too much, so their mind does not get in their way to cause any resistance. They have no stressful constriction of blood vessels caused by adrenaline rushes or fear or anger, they aren't trying to avoid an early death because they are too consumed with the loving, being playful and enjoying life fully.

They are trusting the flow, connecting to their thoughts, emotions and physical body. They are tapped into the perpetual flow of bliss within themselves.

Stress free people have learned that stress is their number one signal from the body to STOP and LET GO! Any avoidance strategy to ignore this signal and keep going is a sign of future pain.

They know this and want to transcend the mental prison of their ego's agenda. They've practiced the art of letting go and releasing stress for years and still consider themselves to be a student. They are always learning. They've truly come around to embracing their own innocence so that they can see and feel within their innermost core of their being is this pure "being" energy...the ecstasy everyone is seeking.

The stress free person also knows how to PLAY with people and takes them self less seriously.

The entire Universe is their playground. If negative thoughts arise in the mind, they are invited in openly and experienced fully by their mind, emotional body and even welcomed physically.

They resist NOTHING. If their previously stress-filled rigid ways of dealing with others come into form, they don't refuse certain "negative" thoughts and feelings, they see each thought in the bigger scheme. That they are just a rocky bank in the greater flow of the River of Life, that has many mysteries, and hidden dimensions to experience. There is no tension found in the stress free being ever because no judgment, resistance or avoidance can find its way in.

How To Mind Control Customer Service Reps

Reader Lona says that people in her family have called her a consumer advocate since she was sixteen, and now she is going to share with us 2,177 words on the customer service tactics and techniques she uses to get satisfaction.

She writes, "in 99% of situations, it allows you to reach an agreeable solution to almost any problem. It is something I do for family and friends, and for myself." Some of her methods have been mentioned in various ways on the site before but others are completely unique.

And by the time you read her true success story at the end, you'll swear she has Jedi mind-control over customer service reps. It boils down to, without raising your voice, asserting control over the conversation from the beginning and then never relinquishing that power.

Lona writes:

"Keep in mind, please, that these rules require that you keep a calm, even head, or at least the appearance and sound of one, and you must have the audacity not to ASK for anything. You will be rude, and you will seem to have entitlement issues. But you will get the job done.

Here are the basic guidelines. The longer and more often you end up doing this, you will find yourself using your own language and tricks. Eventually, you will be able to determine within a few seconds whether the person you have on the phone is the correct person to speak to.

If all of this fails and you happen to be female, try asking a male relative or friend to do it, following the same steps. It sounds wrong, but people respond to voices, and in today's society, a male voice will sometimes go farther. I am female, however, and if you have a strong enough tone and voice, in most cases, you won't need to resort to that.

The True Purpose of Mind Control

By Jorj Elprehzleinn
Publisher of the
Life Transformation Formula

"We can use our mind to create the wonderful reality that we desire by forming a clear image of the result that we desire and then expecting it to come true." --Tycho Photiou

I assume that you have become familiar with a version of the idea that is presented in the lovely quote above. I also assume that as much or as little as you have already tasted the fruits of applying the idea that thoughts can make the things of daily living you have also tasted the bitterness of failure to do it and been clouded with doubt about "this mind control stuff".

You might have heard about other people materializing and manifesting wonderful things. Even you have manifested things and situations yet you wonder why you cannot fill your bank account with so much more money TODAY then ever and park a new Rolls Royce NOW in your driveway fully paid and registered in your name while your gorgeous, loving, intelligent life partner and you peacefully NOW enjoy each others company in your spacious mansion that you own and treasure as a great asset for you filled with all sorts of wonderful things that you love and enjoy and share with your wonderful interesting talented, and ever so delightful friends, family and associates.

Somehow you know that you could do all that if you could really get this mind control stuff mastered. If you could just get it all totally clear.

Can Your Thoughts Affect Your Weight?

By Alix Spiegel

The holidays are finally over and your waistline is as overstretched as your credit card. It's time to take action! What should you do?

A) Hit the gym.

B) Make a solemn pledge to never ingest another sweet for as long as you live.

C) Hit the gym and make a solemn pledge to never ingest another sweet for as long as you live, or …

D) Sit around on the couch eating chocolate bonbons while genuinely believing that you are getting a lot of rigorous exercise.

The answer to this multiple-choice quiz might not be as straightforward as you think. In fact, a recent study by Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer seems to challenge our basic assumptions about the relationship between the physical body and the mind — and perhaps even our assumptions about the nature of objective reality itself. It certainly challenges our assumptions about the limits of the placebo effect.

Why People Believe Weird Things About Money

By Michael Shermer
Source: Los Angeles Times

Would you rather earn $50,000 a year while other people make $25,000, or would you rather earn $100,000 a year while other people get $250,000? Assume for the moment that prices of goods and services will stay the same.

Surprisingly -- stunningly, in fact -- research shows that the majority of people select the first option; they would rather make twice as much as others even if that meant earning half as much as they could otherwise have. How irrational is that?

This result is one among thousands of experiments in behavioral economics, neuroeconomics and evolutionary economics conclusively demonstrating that we are every bit as irrational when it comes to money as we are in most other aspects of our lives. In this case, relative social ranking trumps absolute financial status. Here's a related thought experiment. Would you rather be A or B?

A is waiting in line at a movie theater. When he gets to the ticket window, he is told that as he is the 100,000th customer of the theater, he has just won $100.

B is waiting in line at a different theater. The man in front of him wins $1,000 for being the 1-millionth customer of the theater. Mr. B wins $150.

Amazingly, most people said that they would prefer to be A. In other words, they would rather forgo $50 in order to alleviate the feeling of regret that comes with not winning the thousand bucks. Essentially, they were willing to pay $50 for regret therapy.

The 4 Best Reasons for Lucid Dreaming

We’ve gone over what lucid dreams are and hinted on how to have them, but we haven’t answered a very important question: what is the point in trying to have a lucid dream?

To answer that question, you need only realize that becoming aware you are dreaming presents you with the opportunity to take absolute and complete control of your dreams. In your dreams you are not bound by any physical or imposed restraints—anything is possible. The possibilities of your dreams are limited only by the confines of your own imagination. That premise creates the impression that lucid dreams are used only to create our own pseudo-realities; that is only half the picture. There are also some serious practical uses for lucid dreams in which you should consider, and we’ll get into all of that now.

Below are some common reasons for lucid dreaming, broken down into the following categories:

  • Adventure and Excitement
  • Social Practice
  • Stopping Nightmares
  • Problem Solving
  • Miscellaneous/Not so Practical

What If Everything You Believe Is Wrong?

By Gregg Braden,
Excerpt from The Spontaneous Healing of Belief

We live our lives based in what we believe. When we think about the truth of this statement, we immediately recognize a startling reality: Beyond anything else that we may actually do in our lives, the beliefs that precede our actions are the foundation of all that we cherish, dream, become, and accomplish.

From the morning rituals that we go through to greet the world each day, to the inventions that we use to make our lives better, to the technology that destroys life through war - our personal routines, community customs, religious ceremonies, and entire civilizations are based on our beliefs.

Not only do our beliefs provide the structure for the way we live our lives, now the same areas of study that have discounted our inner experiences in the past are showing us that the way we feel about the world around us is a force that extends into that world.

In this way, science is catching up with our most cherished spiritual and indigenous traditions, which have always told us: that our world is nothing more than a reflection of what we accept in our beliefs.

We live our lives based on what we believe about our world, ourselves, our capabilities, and our limits.

A Skeptic's View of "The Secret"

By Ingrid Hansen Smythe
Source: Skeptic Magazine

Psst! Have you heard The Secret? If not, the first thing you need to know is that The Secret isn’t a secret, and this in itself should set your skeptical alarm bells ringing, since whenever the very name of a thing is a contradiction of the thing itself, it is easy to imagine that the bridge up ahead may be washed out.

The Secret is a simple New-Age notion that is the subject of a recent and wildly successful book by Rhonda Byrne and DVD by Rhonda Byrne of Prime Time Productions. The secret is “The Law of Attraction” that asserts what you think creates what you feel, and these feelings flow from your body as magnetic energy waves over vast distances, which then cause the universe around you to vibrate at the same energy level as your feelings.

If your feelings are negative, negative experiences will inevitably flow right back, positive feelings elicit positive experiences. Like attracts like. “Thoughts are sending out that magnetic signal that is drawing the parallel back to you. It always works; it works every time, with every person.”

Thus there is no such thing as accident or coincidence; it is you, the individual, who brings misery on yourself because of your toxic thinking. But the good news, Eeyore, is this: if you can only alter your thoughts, and therefore your feelings, you can actually cause the universe around you to vibrate at a positive energy level and the desires of your heart will come to be realized!

How to Transcend the Roller Coast of Life

By Jafree Oswald and Margot Zaher
Creators of The Secrets of Manifesting

You are an eternal being who has come here to experience the ride of your life! You’ve signed up to attend this roller coaster ride called life so that you could learn some amazing things and grow immensely. Being the infinite soul that you truly are, you cannot die, so there is nothing really here to fear.

To resist any experience you are given is just saying “NO” to this divine growth and forgetting you are an infinite being. Saying NO to any experience is simply a mis-understanding of the infinite Self, and you end up defining yourself as small, helpless and finite.

This is not the reason WHY you are here. You are here to say YES to each experience that arises, no matter what is given.

Saying YES to every experience may sound even more tortuous, yet when you are willing to explore all the feelings and thoughts you have each moment of the day, you reap the massive benefits from the highs and lows of your roller coaster ride. For each high and low contains a powerful gift for you, and this great gift is found when you are thrown back inside to find your infinite self and experience who you truly are.

And who exactly is that?…

Poland Opens First Exorcism Center

Poland plans to open its first exorcism center, for those who believe they are possessed by the devil, in the town of Poczernin 30 km (18 miles) from the city of Szczeczin, Polish media said Wednesday.

Andrzej Trojanowski, a Catholic priest working in the city says the center will be equipped with a chapel and will have a psychiatrist on hand.

Trojanowski said there was a demand for the service as he deals with up to 20 people a week allegedly possessed by the devil.

The center was the idea of the Catholic Church in Poland, which already has around 50 working exorcists, and the project is expected to provide spiritual help and guidance to the needy.

According to priests their service is popular with visitors from Germany, which has no working exorcists.

Many consider those who claim to be possessed are just mentally ill, whereas others contend that those diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses are really possessed by the devil.

The practice of exorcism by priests and clergy became very popular in the 1970s, which coincided with the 1973 release of the world-wide blockbuster movie The Exorcist.

What Happens After You Make A Wish?

By Jorj Elprehzleinn
Publisher of the Life Transformation System Z

Personally, I don't recommend wishing or dreaming. You see, when you wish in the physical universe you go out of the present moment, and your mind observes this. Your mind sees that you are dreaming about some future event or situation, and it puts you on automatic. When you place a wish into the universe there is invariably and immediately a form of resistance that comes against it. This resistance is called the physical universe. Some people call it real life.

In the Life Transformation Formula e-book, I recommend a technique that allows you to have your dreams and wishes come true, in minutes, in your own universe.

That is part of the trick to it. A real life magic trick. And if you know how to perform this magic, there is no resistance, and your wish has a much better chance of coming true. In fact the Life Transformation Formula is so effective helping other people that one of the problems I noticed is people having trouble tracking all the results they are getting.

In fact one guy who imagined a red Ferrari in his own universe, had one show up parked right outside of the new apartment he was moving into. He was so surprised and excited to see his dream taking form in the physical universe, that he forget to have his girlfriend take a picture of him standing next to it! One of these days, if it is still what he desires, I know he is going to be driving and even owning that car, if that is what he wants.

I thought I better write this article explaining how it is that a wish CAN come true, and to warn you about why they often don't.

Guided Imagery Enhances Healing

Source: Science Daily

Aristotle and Hippocrates believed in the power of images in the brain to enliven the heart and body. Today, research shows they were right. Guided imagery is helping patients use the full range of the body’s healing capacity, according to the January issue of Mayo Clinic Health

Guided imagery is more than listening to relaxing sounds. It’s a learning process to listen to someone’s voice, relax the breathing and consciously direct the ability to imagine. The effect of guided vivid imagery sends a message to the emotional control center of the brain.

From there, the message is passed along to the body’s endocrine, immune and autonomic nervous systems. These systems influence a wide range of bodily functions, including heart and breathing rates and blood pressure.

Guided imagery has been shown to benefit patients by:

  • Reducing side effects from cancer treatment
  • Reducing fear and anxiety prior to surgery. Studies have shown that surgery patients who participated in two to four guided imagery sessions required less pain medication and left the hospital more quickly than those who hadn’t used imagery.
  • Managing stress
  • Managing headaches. Studies have shown that guided imagery may aid in reducing the frequency of migraine headaches as effectively as taking preventive medications
