Smart People Stay Up Late, Do More Drugs, Have More Sex

MindTrip Magazine

What is the mark of an intelligent mind in our day and age? When we think of intelligent people, we may have been conditioned to envision them in a library somewhere studying. We associate intelligence with social reservation and good behaviour.

But what if the opposite were true? What if the ones who are most intelligent are engaging in behaviours grandma and grandpa wouldn’t approve of? Times have changed, and people who have a higher intelligence aren’t always interested in studying and following the rules.

This may sound a bit shocking, but a series of studies have come out showing that intelligent people stay up later, do more drugs, and have more sex. The people in our society who have the highest IQs are nocturnal and enjoy indulging in drugs and sex more often than people with a lower IQ.

21 Reasons You Should Quit Your Day Job And Travel The World

By Karol Gajda, Author of How to Live Anywhere

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou

I discovered Maya Angelou when I was 15 because one of my favorite artists, Fiona Apple, loved her. Thanks Fiona and thanks Maya for providing such a powerful quote.

Most people are born with an interest in travel that never subsides. The fact that blogs like Chris Guillebeau’s, Gary Arndt’s, or mine (on a much much smaller scale) are as popular as they are is proof of this fact.

The problem is that most of us, and I fell into this trap too, put it off. Either for 1-2 weeks at a time on a yearly vacation or “until some day when X happens.” Whatever eXcuse (get it?) you have for continuing on living a life you’re not thrilled with, it’s unfounded. There is always a way. (I just set myself up for a slew of “but, but, but my situation is different” comments/e-mails.)

As you already know from Lesson #13, you’re not as different as you think. Whatever situation you’re in, someone has already been there and still made things happen.

25 Productivity Secrets from History's Greatest Thinkers

MindTrip Magazine
Want to get stuff done? Try these productivity tips from some of the most influential minds in history, as compiled by Mason Curry in Daily Rituals: How Artists Work.

1. Like many of us, Beethoven started his day by making coffee. He insisted on using 60 beans per cup.

2. Benjamin Franklin was "early to bed, early to rise," and in his later years, early to take it all off. Franklin's morning "air baths" consisted of reading and writing completely starkers for about an hour. Then he put his clothes on and got back to work.

3. Many famous writers and artists made sure to eat breakfast. Victor Hugo preferred his eggs raw.

How to Have a Sleep Orgasm

MindTrip Magazine
It happens about three times a month. I'll be in that hazy middle ground between sleeping and waking, clinging onto some vaguely sexy dream I can't quite pin down, before I feel something slowly building. By the time I wake up, I'm having an orgasm.

Never Wake Up Tired With This Simple Trick

If you pay close attention to what people are saying, you will notice that there are more and more of them who claim that they are tired almost all the time. People of all ages say that.

The daily recommended night sleep is eight hours, but the fact is that people usually sleep between 6 and 7 hours.

That’s only an hour or two less, but the fact is that these couple of hours can have big impact on our health.

How Affirmations Helped Create My Worldwide Empire

By Scott Adams, Creator of Dilbert

Several years ago, in the closing pages of my otherwise humorous book titled The Dilbert Future, I told a weird little tale of how I used a technique called affirmations in my attempts to achieve a number of unlikely goals.

Since then, I've received more questions on that topic than on anything else I've ever written. So I know this will pin the needle on the blog comments.

The idea behind affirmations is that you simply write down your goals 15 times a day and somehow, as if by magic, coincidences start to build until you achieve your objective against all odds.

An affirmation is a simple sentence such as "I Scott Adams will become a syndicated cartoonist." (That's one I actually used.)

How to Master the Cosmic Illusion

Everyday life, the time between sitting calmly on your cushion, is an important time for a meditator, in Tibetan Buddhism it is called the post meditation period and is seen as just as important as formal meditation, if not more important. After all the time spent on your cushion is only a fraction of the time you spend in every day life.

A powerful method for keeping an enlightened meditative composure throughout the day is to be mindful that everything experienced is dreamlike and illusory. Masters of illusions are people who can move through the world while staying detached and still keeping their compassion for all the dream-like characters that they meet.

Plants Can Think, Choose, and Remember

Modern science is only beginning to catch up to the wisdom of the ancients: plants possess sentience and a rudimentary form of intelligence.

Plants are far more intelligent and capable than we given them credit.

In fact, provocative research from 2010 published in Plant Signaling & Behavior proposes that since they cannot escape environmental stresses in the manner of animals, they have developed a "sophisticated, highly responsive and dynamic physiology," which includes information processes such as "biological quantum computing" and "cellular light memory" which could be described as forms of plant intelligence.

Brain Surgery While 'Awake' with Hypnosis

Could hypnosis help to reduce the psychological trauma associated with "awake craniotomy" for brain cancers?

A new "hypnosedation" technique offers a new alternative for patients undergoing awake surgery for gliomas, suggests a study in the January issue of Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, published by Wolters Kluwer.
