After all, we'll have access to powerful tools to turn us into cyborgs and hack our DNA, so there's no limit to how we could reinvent ourselves.

But just how weird could our progeny become? Here are 10 of the absolute strangest visions of our post-human future.

Mind-Altering Truth Drugs Used at Gitmo

By Robert Beckhusen / Source: Wired

Prisoners inside the U.S. military's detention center at Guantanamo Bay were forcibly given "mind altering drugs," including being injected with a powerful anti-psychotic sedative used in psychiatric hospitals.

Prisoners were often not told what medications they received, and were tricked into believing routine flu shots were truth serums. It's a serious violation of medical ethics, made worse by the fact that the military continued to interrogate prisoners while they were doped on psychoactive chemicals.

That's according to a recently declassified report from the Pentagon's inspector general, obtained by Truthout after a Freedom of Information Act Request. In it, the inspector general concludes that "certain detainees, diagnosed as having serious mental health conditions being treated with psychoactive medications on a continuing basis, were interrogated." The report does not conclude, though, that anti-psychotic drugs were used specifically for interrogation purposes.

Eat the Sun: Becoming a Solar-Powered Human

Is it possible to stare directly into the sun and not eat food? Meet Mason.

Eat The Sun is a feature length documentary that focuses on a young man’s journey into the little known world of sungazing -- an ancient practice of looking directly at the sun for long periods of time.

San Francisco, CA  2004:  A flyer at school advertising a lecture by an elderly Indian gentleman sparks the imagination of a young man named Mason. The flyer reads: “You can become solar powered.” It also states that the Indian man giving the lecture, who goes by the acronym HRM, has not eaten in over 8 years, a direct result of sungazing.

The Magic Trick of Happiness

By James Altucher

Question: How can I be happy, when the future holds little promise, and you fear you haven't lived the kind of life you can be content with?

Answer: In June, 2003, I Googled what would happen if I put three unlit cigarettes in a cup of water overnight. Then drank the water in the morning. The idea is that nicotine is a lethal poison. When you smoke it you burn most of the poison away. But if it drains into the water…The theory was I'd be dead of a heart attack in sixty seconds. My fear was that I would I have brain damage instead.

I've known people with brain damage. That would be no good. It was three in the morning. I knew I was going to go broke. My office had papers and dead computers and dead books and the cards of dead friends everywhere. The IRS letter was next to my computer. I had an incomparable loneliness in all of my relationships. All the work and hours I had put in had added up to this dirty office and no money.

Neuroscience vs. the Paranormal

By Steve Volk, Author of Fringe-ology

We have been sitting in the dark for hours. I am on the outside of a circle of a half-dozen strangers, reclining on the thick carpeting of a suburban home, watching the silhouette of a hulking man with a digital audio recorder. We are waiting, and listening, for some proof of a ghostly presence in the room.

And I, for one, am not optimistic. I’ve come here with Lou Gentile, a well-known figure within the murky realms of ghost hunting. And so far, we have found nothing to confirm what this family in central New Jersey has told us: they talk about strange rappings, jiggling doorknobs, and an occasional bang in the basement. We have heard nothing of the kind. But more than that, we both think the vibe this family gives off is strange enough without the additive of spirits.

The family patriarch, whom I’ll refer to here as "Paul," moves with the disassociated air of a ghost himself. He is a quiet, intense divorcé who seems to rule over his girlfriend and son with his ominous silences. Like me, he has recently lost a parent -- in his case, his father. And while his family seems to maintain an appropriate skepticism, he clearly wants to believe.

Ouija Board Helps Psychologists Probe the Subconscious

By Clare Wilson / Source: New Scientist
Beloved of spiritualists and bored teenagers on a dare, the Ouija board has long been a source of entertainment, mystery and sometimes downright spookiness. Now it could shine a light on the secrets of the unconscious mind.
The Ouija, also known as a talking board, is a wooden plaque marked with the words, "yes", "no" and the letters of the alphabet. Typically a group of users place their hands on a movable pointer , or "planchette", and ask questions out loud. Sometimes the planchette signals an answer, even when no one admits to moving it deliberately.
Believers think the answer comes through from the spirit world. In fact, all the evidence points to the real cause being the ideomotor effect, small muscle movements we generate unconsciously.

That's why the Ouija board has attracted the attention of psychologists at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Growing evidence suggests the unconscious plays a role in cognitive functions we usually consider the preserve of the conscious mind.

Forget Positive Thinking, Try Positive Action

The self-help industry is mired in ideas about positive thinking that are at best ineffective and at worst destructive. If you want to be more confident or successful, says Richard Wiseman, the best thing to do is act the part

By Richard Wiseman / Source: The Guardian

For years self-help gurus have preached the same simple mantra: if you want to improve your life then you need to change how you think. Force yourself to have positive thoughts and you will become happier. Visualise your dream self and you will enjoy increased success. Think like a millionaire and you will magically grow rich. In principle, this idea sounds perfectly reasonable. However, in practice it often proves ineffective.

Take visualisation. Hundreds of self-improvement books encourage readers to close their eyes and imagine their perfect selves; to see themselves in a huge office at the top of the corporate ladder, or sipping a cocktail as they feel the warm Caribbean sand between their toes. Unfortunately, research suggests this technique does not work.

You Might As Well Change

The best advice I ever heard was given to someone else.

An acquaintance was 30 years old and regretting not finishing college. He wanted to earn his degree but thought he was too old.

A wise old man told him, "In two years, you're going to be 32. You're either going to be 32 with a degree or without one. Choose which 32 year old do you want to be?"

Time presses on. Tomorrow you'll have one less day than you had the day before. In a month, those 30 days are gone forever.
Time is an artificial construct that measures change. We are moving through time. We are changing through time.

How to Accomplish More With Less Effort

By Jane Collins, Author of Willing Change

When you arrived in this world as a baby, you had no sense of who you were or how you fit into the world. You were free to just feel whatever you felt and to be who you were.

You arrived with a mind pre-programmed to learn, explore, discover, and love. Curiosity dominated your early thoughts, and the more you saw, heard, and felt, the more you wanted to learn and experience.

Your natural inclination was to grow and to have more of everything. Being free of the influences of other people's experiences, you were without judgment, open to all possibilities, and without any beliefs in limitations.
