Donovan, famous for '60s pop hits such as "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Mellow Yellow," has announced plans to open the Invincible Donovan University, where students will adhere to the principles of transcendental meditation.
"I know it sounds like an airy-fairy hippie dream to go on about '60s peace and love," said the 61-year-old singer, who was born Donovan Leitch in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. "But the world is ready for this now, it is clear this is the time."

Brain Boosting Drugs Spark Ethical Debate
By Ben Hirschler
Source: Reuters
A rise in healthy people popping pills to boost performance in exams or work, raises long-term ethical and safety concerns about the effects of such treatments, British doctors said on Thursday.
The British Medical Association (BMA) wants a public debate about the risks and benefits of using drugs to improve memory and concentration, sometimes called "cognitive enhancement".
The ability of prescription drugs and medical procedures to improve intellectual performance is likely to increase significantly in the next 20 to 30 years as technology advances.
"We know that there is likely to be a demand by healthy individuals for this treatment," Dr Tony Calland, chairman of the BMA's Medical Ethics Committee said at the launch of a discussion paper on the issue.
"However, given that no drug or invasive medical procedure is risk free, is it ethical to make them available to people who are not ill?"

I Was a Neuroscience Guinea Pig: How Scientists Scrambled My Brain
By Lisa Katayama
Source: Wired.com
I feel like the hoodlum Alex in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange: My head is held steady by a chin strap, while two technicians grease my scalp with conductive gel and slip on a cap bristling with electrodes.
I'm about to have my brain scrambled -- electrically -- in the name of medical science. Scientists are going to knock out regions of my brain while I perform a memory test.
"We're ready to do some zapping!" one of the technicians says excitedly.
I'm a guinea pig in a brain-scan experiment conceived by neuroscientist Adam Gazzaley, who is testing how memory changes with age. The "zapping" induces seizures in some subjects and cures depression in others. I don't know what it will do to me, but I'm about to find out.

Old Brain, New Tricks
By Cara Feinberg

Esref Armagan is a 52-year-old Turkish painter who has been blind in both eyes since the day he was born. He has never seen a coffee cup, a toothbrush, an elephant, or a tree-lined street, but he can draw them each, from any perspective, with or without shadows depending on the time of day.
His portrait of President Clinton, which he painted from an embossed photograph, looks, well, like Clinton-complete with grey hair and bulbous nose-and though Armagan has never had an art lesson, the streets he paints stretch into the distance as converging parallel lines.
For years, Armagan has been a phenomenon in the art world, displaying his work in museums around the globe. But it was not until two summers ago, when he traveled to Boston, that scientists were able to study precisely how he generates such images.
Their hope was that he might teach them something about neural ''plasticity"--the brain's ability to reorganize its functions based on new information and experiences. If Armagan had never seen with his eyes, how had his brain adapted to give him visual representations of the world, and more importantly, what could it reveal about brain adaptation in general?

How Hypnosis Boosts Your Immune System
By Steve G. Jones
Better Living With Hypnosis
The mind/body connection has long been understood by hypnotherapists. In fact, the mind has such a powerful impact over physical well being that people have been known to “will” themselves into better health or even to death. Hypnosis works to keep the body healthy by boosting the immune system through positive thought processes that reduce stress and ignite the body’s own healing abilities.
Emotional stress has such a destructive impact on health. When stress is left unchecked, it causes the body to have a continual release of the hormone cortisol which can negatively impact such things as blood pressure and cholesterol. This can ultimately lead to heart disease. Hypnosis works to relax the mind and body to reduce stress and cortisol production. In addition, hypnosis can boost the immune system by acting as a catalyst to wound healing and vitamin absorption as it eliminates stress.
A study of 33 medical students was conducted by the Ohio State University and reports that self-hypnosis was able to reduce stress and lead to strengthened immune systems in the sub-group given the hypnotic relaxation training. These students experienced less anxiety during exam time. In addition, blood tests indicated greater immune responses as T-cells in their blood were studied both before stressful periods and during them.
Hypnosis is used at a time of day when the participant is able to completely relax, usually just before going to sleep. Self-hypnosis will not be effective if there are other distractions such as driving a car or doing tasks around the house. The mind needs to relax to the point where the hypnotic messages can completely penetrate the subconscious. This way the stress that can hinder the immune system can be removed and the body can become strengthened.
Clinical Hypnotherapist, Steve G. Jones’ program Immune System Booster is used over the course of a few weeks to reduce stress and improve immune system function.

Mind Control -- Through Your Nose
Source: New York Times
Within a broader movement known as "full-sensory branding," the practice of scent marketing -- using specially formulated fragrances to make you buy unrelated products and services -- is on the rise. Smell, it is said, has an unrivaled power to evoke emotion, and this power can be harnessed to boost sales.
Hundreds of companies already set your mood with piped-in aromas, in everything from real estate show rooms to shoe stores. Advertising Age named the practice one of the top 10 trends to watch in 2007. ScentAir, a producer of aroma-marketing systems, stated their business quadrupled between 2005 and 2006.

Pharmaceutical Company Tests 'Fountain of Youth' Pill in Humans
By David Ewing Duncan
Source: Portfolio.com
When Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon heard rumors of a fountain of youth from native Floridians in 1513, he was desperate enough to find it that he was willing to march in chain mail through fetid swamps infested with mosquitoes, alligators, and hostile locals. He never found it.
Nearly five centuries later, the fabled longevity imbued by Florida's mythic fountains may be here for real. Not spewing from a magical spring with sweet-tasting waters, but in a pill designated SRT501.
In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Sirtris Pharmaceuticals is testing such a pill in humans in a Food and Drug Administration-approved clinical trial. The tests began last spring with 85 volunteers; in August, the company announced that this medication designed to slow aging and bump up lifespan is working.
A caveat: It will take years of tests and trials to know if the drug will ultimately permit people to routinely live to over 100 years old, while fending off diseases of aging ranging from diabetes to cancer.

How To Get Motivated and Overcome Procrastination
By Arina Nikitina
Author of "How to Set and Achieve a Goal"
Procrastination is a complicated behavior that affects all people to some degree. Some experience only small problems with procrastination while with others, it is a major source of anxiety and stress.
Lack of motivation and procrastination is related to time management. Procrastinators often fail to complete tasks even though thsey know what the task is and the time they have to do it.
Why do people procrastinate? Often a difficult task is avoided in favor of the less difficult. Tasks that take longer amounts of time are less desirable than those that can be completed quickly. People sometimes procrastinate due to fear of failure.
No one wants to be embarrassed by a lack of knowledge or skills when beginning a new task. Overcoming the fear of failure and developing good work habits will do wonders for those who tend to procrastinate.
The first step in overcoming procrastination is to recognize what psychological issues cause you to procrastinate in the first place.

Scientists 'Read' Paralyzed Man's Mind
Source: BBC
Scientists say they may be on the brink of translating into words the thoughts of a man who can no longer speak, after a pioneering experiment.
Electrodes have been implanted in the brain of Eric Ramsay, who has been "locked in" - conscious but paralysed - since a car crash eight years ago.
These have been recording pulses in areas of the brain involved in speech.
Now, New Scientist magazine reports, they are to use the signals he generates to drive speech software.
Although the data is still being analysed, researchers at Boston University believe they can correctly identify the sound Mr Ramsay's brain is imagining some 80% of the time.

Don't Forget to Backup Your Brain
By Corinna Underwood
Source: FoxNews
As any Baby Boomer will tell you, Americans have more information to cram into their memories than ever. Yet, as we age, our capacity for recall grows weaker.
But what if you could capture every waking moment of your entire life, store it on your computer and then recall digital snapshots of everything you've seen and heard with just a quick search?
Renowned computer scientist Gordon Bell, head of Microsoft's Media Presence Research Group and founder of the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley, thinks he might be able to do just that.
He calls it a "surrogate memory," and what he considers an early version of it even has an official name — MyLifeBits.

What's In Your Spiritual Toolkit?
By Nelson Berry
Creator of Subliminal Video Messages
Tools are tools that you use to make yourself of maximum value to yourself and others. All of the tools that you use to acheive this aim are in your "Spiritual Toolkit".
It is mandatory to have a spiritual toolkit and to use the tools -- and use them regularly -- to to initiate/ maintain/ improve your value to yourself (The Power Within You) and others. It is very simple to apply the tools.
What are some of the things that are in your spiritual toolkit?
1- Helping others outside of your job?
2- Gratitude - Make a list of things you are grateful for (this is actually a tool!).
3- Taking time to talk and listen to someone about their problems.
4- Meeting new people and trying to be helpful and useful in all circumstances.
5- Cleaning up your place (or someone elses place) so that you have a clean place to bring people to further your relationships and usefulness.
6- Going to the gym/ keeping yourself physically fit so you CAN be of service to people in the first place.
7- Subliminal Messages so you can outgrow your fears and increase your personal power in all areas faster.
8- Prayer/ Meditation.
9- Volunteer work.
10- Share with others what is working for you.
11- This list could go on and on....
Did you know that spiritual progress always proceeds material possessions? It is NEVER the other way around!
Get busy using your spiritual tools and get busy living a large & rich life Today!
With Respect,

Boost Your Brain Power with Neurobics
By Dr. Sean Kenniff
Source: CBS News
Tom McQuade's memory isn't what it used to be. "Forgetting simple things. Going out to work to look for my belt, and it's around my waist."
Tom's wife, Ann, married together for 39 years, has even more trouble. "She starts asking me where we are. It's as much the confusion as much as the memory."
That's the reason they've come to Leeza's Place in Pembroke Pines. They want to sharpen their minds with new activities.
Dr. Damon Salzman from The Memory Center at Memorial Hospital Pembroke says, "Brain cells actually continue to grow, even in adults," meaning older brains improve with new challenges.
That "use it or lose it" philosophy is the premise behind "Neurobic," a book of 83 brain boosting exercises.

Microsoft Plans to Read Your Mind
Source: New Scientist
Not content with running your computer, Microsoft now wants to read your mind too.
The company says that it is hard to properly evaluate the way people interact with computers since questioning them at the time is distracting and asking questions later may not produce reliable answers. "Human beings are often poor reporters of their own actions," the company says.
Instead, Microsoft wants to read the data straight from the user's brain as he or she works away. They plan to do this using electroencephalograms (EEGs) to record electrical signals within the brain. The trouble is that EEG data is filled with artefacts caused, for example, by blinking or involuntary actions, and this is hard to tease apart from the cognitive data that Microsoft would like to study.
So the company has come up with a method for filtering EEG data in such a way that it separates useful cognitive information from the not-so-useful non-cognitive stuff. The company hopes that the data will better enable to them to design user interfaces that people find easy to use. Whether users will want Microsoft reading their brain waves is another matter altogether.

LSD and the Secret of Life
By Alun Rees
Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA over 50 years ago.
The abrasive and unorthodox Crick and his brilliant American co-researcher James Watson famously celebrated their eureka moment in March 1953 by running from the now legendary Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge to the nearby Eagle pub, where they announced over pints of bitter that they had discovered the secret of life.
Crick, who died [in 2004], aged 88, later told a fellow scientist that he often used small doses of LSD, then an experimental drug used in psychotherapy, to boost his powers of thought. He said it was LSD, not the Eagle's warm beer, that helped him to unravel the structure of DNA, the discovery that won him the Nobel Prize.

How to Read Minds to Influence the Opposite Sex
By Steve Gillman
Excerpt from A Book of Secrets
I hope you won't be too disappointed when I tell you that you'll never read minds like Mel Gibson in "What Women Want."
However, you can learn how to get a better idea of the general state of mind and receptivity of the person in front of you. And you can subliminally persuade the opposite sex. Lets jump straight to one of the fun ways.
Watch Those Pupils
A persons pupils get bigger when they are aroused, interested and/or receptive. If you look into his or her eyes and see those pupils growing large - it's looking good for you. Basically big pupils (unless it's just dark) mean a person likes what they see.
Try this experiment, and you'll understand how immediate this effect can be. Go right now and look in the mirror at your own eyes. As you look at them, imagine a sexy man or woman you are attracted to - in whatever way would turn you on. You'll see that your pupils get bigger in just seconds. Actually, if you love to fish, they may get big just thinking about a lake you love. Anything you like to look at can make your pupils bigger.
Now, there are two ways to use this...

The $100,000 Self Improvement Experiment
By John Paul Carinci
Author of The Power of Being Different
The magic of believing will help you gain tremendous rewards. Let's look at an example of belief. When you have pains in your chest, you may become alarmed. After you make an appointment with your doctor, he will give you a complete examination and tell you to come back in order to go over the test results.
On the second visit, the doctor tells you that all the tests come back negative and that there is nothing to be concerned about. He explains that perhaps you were affected by stress and that you should try to relax. If you do not feel better, he suggests that you can come back for another visit.
Having heard the good news that nothing is wrong, you leave the doctor’s office suddenly feeling fantastic. Your mind gets rid of all your aches and pains that you thought were real.
Belief in something, including your own health, is very powerful. If you learn how to capitalize on the power of belief, you can alter your life for the good.
What if someone promised to pay you $100,000 in return for following a 10-day plan that was not hazardous in any way, morally acceptable to you, and which was guaranteed to improve your life? Would you agree to follow the plan? You probably would because you wanted the $100,000 reward.
