Probing the Mind For God

By Doug Beazley,
Edmonton Sun

It's the Holy Grail of brain research: trapping God in a magnetic bottle. In late 2003, University of Montreal neuroscientist Mario Beauregard started inviting local Carmelite nuns to strap themselves into a barber chair in his lab, so that he could scan their brains with a powerful magnetic field.

He was looking for physical evidence of the unio mystica, the profoundly emotional Christian experience of God as a physical presence.

Since devout Christians like the Carmelites only get the real unio once or twice in their lives, Beauregard asked the nuns to simply remember the sensation, while their heads were wrapped in electrodes.

He wasn't trying to debunk the experience - just explain it, in biological terms.

"The experience is real, but the manifestation is in the brain," he told one newspaper. His hope is that by quantifying religious bliss, doctors may someday be able to induce it for anyone seeking spiritual comfort or growth.

Your Job From Hell

By Stuart Goldsmith
Elite Inner Circle

I now want to share with you an amazingly powerful
method of helping you to realize what your dream job might be. I am indebted to Barbara Sher author of "I Could Do Anything If Only I Knew What It Was" for this idea.

Before I explain this exercise, I want to give you an
example of a technique which has some merit, but is not very effective. This is the sort of technique you'll read about in books on life-planning, and I find it very unsatisfactory.

Take a sheet of paper (yes, you can start groaning).
On the top of the paper write the words 'My Job From Heaven.' Underneath this, write out exactly what the title implies.

This is fantasy time, so let your imagination run riot.
You can design your own perfect fantasy job. Where will you work? Who will you work with? In what sort of environment? Doing what? What hours will you work? What salary will you be paid? Is it a manual job? A creative job? Just put down anything you can think of which would make your working day blissful.

What do you think of that for an exercise?

Okay, it has its merits, but if you actually try to
complete this exercise you'll find it fairly difficult.

The reason is that the second you try to fantasize
about your ideal job, negative thoughts and conditioning crowd your mind, effectively saying to you: "Don't be silly! You can't have that! That would be impossible. That's asking too much."

Now, and I hope you're ready for this...take another
blank sheet of paper and on the top of it write: 'My Job From Hell.'

Mind-Reading Machine Knows What You See

New Scientist News Service

It is possible to read someone’s mind by remotely measuring their brain activity, researchers have shown. The technique can even extract information from subjects that they are not aware of themselves.

So far, it has only been used to identify visual patterns a subject can see or has chosen to focus on. But the researchers speculate the approach might be extended to probe a person’s awareness, focus of attention, memory and movement intention. In the meantime, it could help doctors work out if patients apparently in a coma are actually conscious.

Scientists have already trained monkeys to move a robotic arm with the power of thought and to recreate scenes moving in front of cats by recording information directly from the feline’s neurons. But these processes involve implanting electrodes into their brains to hook them up to a computer.

Now Yukiyasu Kamitani, at ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, and Frank Tong at Princeton University in New Jersey, US, have achieved similar “mind reading” feats remotely using functional MRI scanning.

"I'm Thinking... But I'm Not Growing Rich!"

By Bob Doyle
Wealth Beyond Reason

So you've read "Think and Grow Rich", and you've got an intellectual understanding that you "become what you think about". You have a list of affirmations about wealth, and you recite them every day.

But you still have no money. Wealth doesn't seem to be anywhere around.

What's the deal here? According to Napoleon Hill, you ought to be filthy stinkin' rich, right?

Well, here's the real deal: If you're not "Wealth Conscious", than all this thinking, and all this affirming isn't going to bring you wealth. Thinking, and affirming are simply actions you're taking. But they are just PART of the sequence of creating wealth. If you skip the FIRST step, you simply can't get anywhere.

So what's the first step?

Being.

To attract wealth, you first have to BE wealthy. THEN, you think wealthy thoughts, speak wealthy affirmations, and take wealthy action.

"But how can I BE wealthy if I'm NOT wealthy?" you ask. Logical question, but it's based on the false assumption that you don't have wealth. You HAVE wealth. You're simply not aware of it. You have constructed a physical reality that prevents you from experiencing Wealth. This can all be explained with the science of Quantum Physics.

So let's look at some very basic concepts of Quantum Physics that will explain what I'm talking about.

Alarm Clock Reads Your Brainwaves, Wakes You When You're Ready

New Scientist

Are you a real grump in the mornings? Do you wake up every day feeling tired, embittered, aggrieved, and all too ready to hit the snooze button? If so, then a new alarm clock could be just for you.

The clock, called SleepSmart, measures your sleep cycle, and waits for you to be in your lightest phase of sleep before rousing you. Its makers say that should ensure you wake up feeling refreshed every morning.

As you sleep you pass through a sequence of sleep states - light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep - that repeats approximately every 90 minutes. The point in that cycle at which you wake can affect how you feel later, and may even have a greater impact than how long or little you have slept. Being roused during a light phase means you are more likely to wake up perky.

Using Hypnosis to Numb the Pain of Childbirth

By David Rogers,
Palm Beach Daily News

For some expectant women, the idea of going through hours of childbirth without pain relief medication may be frightening.

It is the fear of the unknown, however, that can make childbirth an unpleasant experience, according to hypnotist Dale Dougherty.

Dougherty plans to offer the class every month for women who are five- to eight-months pregnant.

First-time mothers can be especially fearful of childbirth. Fear creates physical tension that makes childbirth more painful, Dougherty said.

In the class, Dougherty teaches women to accept suggestions for the subconscious mind that can relax the body and numb it to pain.

The method, developed using obstetrician and natural childbirth pioneer Grantly Dick-Read's 1944 book Childbirth Without Fear, has gotten more attention in recent years following media coverage.

When the hypnobirthing method is used, the birth takes place in a quiet room with low lighting. Nurses are present, but intervene only as needed, Dougherty said. The birthing companion acts as a liaison with staff so the mother-to-be interacts with fewer people. Rather than teaching women to bear down intently once the cervix dilates to 10 centimeters, hypnobirthing teaches them to wait until the baby's head reaches the end of the birth canal.

The 75% Success Solution

By Stuart Goldsmith,
Elite Inner Circle

There are four steps to attaining everything that you want in life. They are simple steps and I will tell you what they are:

1. Know what you want.

2. Believe that you are worth it.

3. Believe that you can achieve it.

4. Go out and get it.

Now; (and this is surprising part of the system), most people would think that item number four - getting what you want - is the biggest obstacle standing in their path. THEY WOULD BE WRONG! You will be surprised to learn that knowing what you want and believing that you can get it, form over SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT of the secret of success. Yes, 75%!

Actually going out and getting the things you desire is only 25% of the battle!

You, like me, and milliòns of other people, have probably spent a lifetime thinking that it was the other way round! You probably thought that belief in yourself and knowing what you want formed 25% of the solution, and that getting the things you want formed 75%. This is the first of many 'minor secrets' which I impart to you in my book, "The Midas Method".

Believe me, it makes a big difference knowing that your mental attitude is responsible for 75% of the obstacles standing between you and success. When I first realised this, it was as though a cloud had lifted from my vision. I felt as though I had been swimming under water for years and had suddenly popped my head above the surface and realised that there was a whole new world out there.

Why is this knowledge so important? Because it totally shifts your perspective on the problem! Before I realised that belief in myself and knowledge of where I wanted to be, were so important, I had blamed external circùmstances for my lack of success. Believe me, I blamed anything and everybody rather than myself.

Intelligent Bacteria?

Special to World Science

Bacteria are by far the simplest things alive, at least among things generally agreed on as being alive. Next to one of these single-celled beings, one cell of our bodies looks about as complex as a human does compared to a sponge.

A colony of Paenibacillus dendritiformis bacteria, which some researchers say can organize themselves into different types of extravagant formations to maximize food intake for given conditions. According to some, this reflects a bacterial intelligence. (Courtesy Eshel Ben-Jacob, Tel Aviv University, Israel)

Yet the humble microbes may have a rudimentary form of intelligence, some researchers have found.

The claims seem to come as a final exclamation point to a long series of increasingly surprising findings of sophistication among the microbes, including apparent cases of cooperation and even altruism.

The Myth of Women's Intuition

By Nic Fleming,
The Telegraph

The popular assumption that women's powers of intuition exceed those of men has been overturned by a new study.

Psychologists who tested the abilities of more than 15,000 people to identify the sincerity or otherwise of different smiles have concluded that female intuition is a myth.

Shown a series of pairs of images of individuals displaying real and fake smiles, men marginally outperformed women. When it came to judging genuine and false expressions of happiness in the opposite sex, male participants did significantly better than females.

Professor Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire, said: "These findings question the notion that women really are more intuitive than men. Some previous research has found evidence for female intuition but perhaps, over time, men have become more in touch with their intuitive side.

If Placebos Work, Should Doctors Use Them?

By Gregory M. Lamb
The Christian Science Monitor

Most people think of placebos as harmless "sugar pills" given in clinic trials to some participants so that medical researchers can gauge the effects of the real drug on others. But in some trials, the "placebo effect" proves to be as strong as that of the drug. Consistently 30 percent or more of the subjects given placebos will show some improvement by taking the dummy pills.

So over the decades a small band of researchers has taken a hard look at those pills. Are they really effective? Should they play a role in medical therapy?

A landmark study in 2001 concluded that they weren't useful. It "found little evidence in general that placebos had powerful clinical effects," the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported.

But that hardly put the matter to rest as new studies emerged. A March article in The New Scientist summed up the problem: It listed the placebo effect as one of "13 things that do not make sense" to science.

The One Hypnotic Command That Always Works

By Joe Vitale,
Hypnotic Marketing

I learned about the one hypnotic command that always works from hypnotists. A good hypnotist will never give a subject a choice or offer a list of "reasons why you should fall asleep right now."

Instead, a good hypnotist will simply issue a command, "When I count to three, you will close your eyes," or, "When I snap my fingers, you will bark like a dog." The subject responds because they want to please the hypnotist and because they don't have much of a choice.

Your prospects are nearly the same. Give them too many "reasons why you should buy" and you risk boring them, overwhelming them, or irking them. Give them the "one hypnotic command that always works" and they will do your bidding.

Want proof? Okay. Answer me this: Why are you reading this article?

I'm betting the title for this article promised you something you felt would be worth your reading to get. You want to know the one hypnotic command that always works so you can use it to increase sales, get more dates, or in some way get more of what you want from people. Right?

But note that I didn't have to tell you all those reasons to read this article. I gave you *one* sentence---the title to this piece---and you decided to read it based on it alone. Any further reasons for reading this were supplied by you, not me.

Brain Scans Prove Hypnosis Reduces Pain

Although hypnosis has been shown to reduce pain perception, it is not clear how the technique works. Identifying a sound, scientific explanation for hypnosis' effect might increase acceptance and use of this safe pain-reduction option in clinical settings.

Researchers at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and the Technical University of Aachen, Germany, used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to find out if hypnosis alters brain activity in a way that might explain pain reduction.

The researchers found that volunteers under hypnosis experienced significant pain reduction in response to painful heat. They also had a distinctly different pattern of brain activity compared to when they were not hypnotized and experienced the painful heat. The changes in brain activity suggest that hypnosis somehow blocks the pain signal from getting to the parts of the brain that perceive pain.

Sony Plans to Beam Sights and Sounds Into Your Brain

If you think video games are engrossing now, just wait: PlayStation maker Sony Corp. has been granted a patent for beaming sensory information directly into the brain.

The technique could one day be used to create video games in which you can smell, taste, and touch, or to help people who are blind or deaf.

The U.S. patent, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain to induce "sensory experiences" such as smells, sounds and images.

"The pulsed ultrasonic signal alters the neural timing in the cortex," the patent states. "No invasive surgery is needed to assist a person, such as a blind person, to view live and/or recorded images or hear sounds."

According to New Scientist magazine, the first to report on the patent, Sony's technique could be an improvement over an existing non-surgical method known as transcranial magnetic stimulation. This activates nerves using rapidly changing magnetic fields, but cannot be focused on small groups of brain cells.

Niels Birbaumer, a neuroscientist at the University of Tuebingen in Germany, told New Scientist he had looked at the Sony patent and "found it plausible." Birbaumer himself has developed a device that enables disabled people to communicate by reading their brain waves.

A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

Gaining Respect and Appreciation Using The Ancient Laws of the Universe

By Nikola Grubisa and Boris Vene
EnlightenedSalesperson.com

You can influence others to feel and sometimes even do things you want -- without words.

How does it work?

Simply -- when another person approaches you and is open, he or she will "tune into" your energy state, especially if your energy is strong and determined and if that person trusts you, as you will see in continuation.

In the next step, this energy will begin to resonate with him.

The consequence?

He will begin to feel it. Further, he will "listen to it" and even move his consciousness into that energy. (Whatever you are engaged in, your consciousness will gradually move into.)

What does it mean to move your consciousness into a specific energy?

It means that you gradually concentrate and focus your thoughts, feelings, activities and perceptions around that energy.

So whatever you feel, do, think, etc. will have to match that energy. And because this energy (or vibration) acts as a filter, whatever comes in has to go through it; likewise, whatever comes out of you has to match its rules -- so your life is strictly limited to a those perceptions that match this vibration -- and everything else doesn't even touch you, much less influence you.

Think Positive to Lose Weight

By Sally Squires
The Washington Post

One of the best predictors of successful weight loss may have less to do with eating than with thinking.

A team of researchers from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands reports that obese people who think they will be successful in weight loss shed significantly more pounds than their counterparts who are less certain of their ability to adhere to a weight-loss program. The results are the latest to underscore the importance of "self-efficacy" in fostering successful behavior change.

"Self-efficacy is your confidence that you can perform a particular behavior," explains Carlo C. DiClemente, chairman of psychology at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and co-author of the book "Changing for Good".

First described by Stanford University psychologist Albert Bandura, "self-efficacy is a potent predictor of treatment outcome across dozens of health behaviors," notes John C. Norcross, professor of psychology at the University of Scranton. "In fact, it supports the age-old wisdom that if you think you can succeed, you will, and if you don't, you won't."

Brain Chip Reads Man's Thoughts

BBC

A paralysed man in the US has become the first person to benefit from a brain chip that reads his mind.

Matthew Nagle, 25, was left paralysed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair after a knife attack in 2001.

The pioneering surgery at New England Sinai Hospital, Massachusetts, last summer means he can now control everyday objects by thought alone.

The brain chip reads his mind and sends the thoughts to a computer to decipher.

He can think his TV on and off, change channels and alter the volume thanks to the technology and software linked to devices in his home.

Scientists have been working for some time to devise a way to enable paralysed people to control devices with the brain.

Studies have shown that monkeys can control a computer with electrodes implanted into their brain.

The Psychic Shield and the Power of Now

By Michael Goodspeed,
Thunderbolts.info

Most medical doctors are more adept at treating an illness' symptoms than identifying and conquering its root cause. If a patient has strep throat, a doctor will prescribe antibiotics, and the symptoms will usually dissipate. But it is unlikely that the doctor will explore in depth why the person became sick in the first place. The patient might be "cured" of the strep throat, but he is still suffering from a compromised immune system. He had step throat yesterday, and tomorrow he'll have cancer.

This narrow field of vision also affects many in the field of self-help. Countless books have been written about the road to recovery from addiction and neurosis, but like the medical doctor who only sees the symptoms of a sickness, most of these authors do not identify the taproot of dysfunction. Even the 12-step program may be lacking in this regard. Participants are told to embrace a Higher Power, but they may be left to wonder, "Where is this Higher Power? How do I find it?"

But what if it is possible to identify a single taproot of all human suffering? Could we cut it out like a tumor and make ourselves well? Because the mind is a complex tapestry, the very notion seems naïve and simplistic.

Simplistic or not, one author not only succeeds in finding this taproot, but hands the reader an axe and instructs him to swing. The name of the author is Eckhart Tolle, and the book is titled, "The Power of Now." I've plowed through countless spiritual, new age, and mainstream therapeutic guides to self-improvement, but Tolle's words resonate with more fundamental truth than anything else I've read.
