How to Make Your Own Luck

By Alan Bellows
Source: DamnInteresting.com

Some individuals seem to have an inexplicable abundance of good fortune. They are successful in matters of love, in their careers, in their finances, and in leading happy and meaningful lives. Yet these people don't seem to work particularly hard, nor do they posses extraordinary intelligence or other gifts. Of course there are also the natural opposites of the superfortunate; people who repeatedly fail despite their efforts and talents.

As is true with so many human problems, people tend to deal with this difficult-to-quantify inequality by giving it a name -- "luck" -- and then disclaiming any responsibility for how much of it they are apportioned. Luck is considered by many to be a force of nature, coming and going as inevitably as the tide. But Richard Wiseman, a professor at Britain's University of Hertfordshire, has conducted some experiments which indicate to him that we have a lot more influence on our own good fortune than we realize.

Professor Wiseman executed a ten-year study to determine the nature of luck, and published his findings in a book called The Luck Factor: The Scientific Study of the Lucky Mind.

Why Time Slows Down in Emergencies

By Charles Q. Choi,
Special to LiveScience.com

In The Matrix, the hero Neo could dodge bullets because time moved in slow motion for him during battles. Indeed, in the real world, people in danger often feel as if time slowed down for them.

This warping of time apparently does not result from the brain speeding up from adrenaline when in danger. Instead, this feeling seems to be an illusion, scientists now find.

To see if danger makes people experience time in slow motion, scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston tried scaring volunteers. However, roller coasters and other frightening amusement park rides did not cause enough fear to make time warp.

Instead, the researchers dropped volunteers from great heights. Scientists had volunteers dive backward with no ropes attached, into a special net that helped break their fall. They reached 70 mph during the roughly three-second, 150-foot drop.

Act Rich to Become Rich

By Adam Khoo
Source
: Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires

Always keep in mind that you can attract as much money as you desire by knowing that it is all in the mind. It is what you choose to think, and act upon, that produces the money you want. What you think will be, will be.

What I am about to teach you is a simple yet very powerful way of attracting wealth and prosperity in your life.

First, imagine what life would be like if you are rich. Don’t just see it. Feel it as if you’re already experiencing the luxuries and lifestyle of the rich.

Do you see yourself driving your dream car? What model and color is it? Touch the seat and feel its soft texture. Open the car radio and listen to your favorite music. Experience the joy of driving it towards your favorite place.

Maybe you could visualize a house. How many rooms does it have? Take a relaxing soak in the bath tub. Smell the food aroma coming out from the large kitchen. Play sports in your own private gym.

The important thing here is to believe that you are already rich.

Now doesn’t that feel good? By doing this exercise, you are unleashing the powers of your subconscious and directing it to give you what you’re dreaming of.

But it doesn’t end there. To make this even more effective, breathe slowly while still hanging on to this wonderful feeling of being rich, and say a small thanks to God, or to a Higher Power.

By being grateful, you are commanding the Powers of the Universe to work in your favor. You are confirming that you are graciously accepting your blessings.

Try it out. Believe and feel that you are already wealthy, and be thankful for it. You will be astounded by the results.

The Amazing Kreskin Predicts Next President

Associated Press

No votes have been cast for president yet. But the Kreskin primary is over.

George Kresge Jr., better known as The Amazing Kreskin, wrote the name of his choice to win next year's election, had a rabbi sign the paper and dropped it into a locked box on Thursday.

Kreskin says he didn't want to make a presidential prediction. But the name of the winner came to him three months ago and wouldn't leave him alone. So he came up with the scheme to write it down and lock it away.

"If I can remain impartial at least by putting it away, sealing it, having someone witness what I wrote, then I can at least get the credit. Because I really think I hit it," the 72-year-old mentalist said.

Chimps Beat Humans in Memory Tests

By Rowan Hooper
Source: New Scientist

Young chimps can beat adult humans in a task involving remembering numbers, reveals a new study. It is the first time chimps – and young ones, at that – have outperformed humans at a cognitive task.

And the finding may add weight to a theory about the evolution of language in humans, say the researchers.

Three adult female chimps, their three 5-year-old offspring, and university student volunteers were tested on their ability to memorise the numbers 1 to 9 appearing at random locations on a touchscreen monitor.

The chimps had previously been taught the ascending order of the numbers. Using an ability akin to photographic memory, the young chimps were able to memorise the location of the numerals with better accuracy than humans performing the same task.

During the test, the numerals appeared on the screen for 650, 430 or 210 milliseconds, and were then replaced by blank white squares.

While the adult chimps were able to remember the location of the numbers in the correct order with the same or worse ability as the humans, the three adolescent chimps outperformed the humans.

Improve Your Self Confidence in 15 Minutes

By Mark Tyrrell
Creative Director of Hypnosis Downloads

I used to be frighteningly lacking in confidence in social situations. And although people who know me now would never believe it, I used to doubt myself so much that I literally had to learn confidence until it became a natural part of me. I can tell you: relaxed optimistic confidence is just, well, so much more fun! Here I'll tell you about the things that made the most difference to my confidence levels...

Some people have naturally high levels of confidence but everybody can learn to be more confident. Firstly, it's important to get a clear idea of what self confidence really means, otherwise you won't know when you've got it! So, self confidence means:

1. Being calm. For every situation in life you need to run on the appropriate level of emotion. Too much emotional 'leakage' into a experience can spoil the experience. You make great strides towards confidence when you begin to relax in a greater range of situations.

2. Being cool. The second part of self confidence is about being able to relax with uncertainty. To be 'cool' in a situation really means relaxing with not knowing how things will pan out. If you truly tolerate uncertainty, you can do pretty much anything.

3. Not being too concerned with what others think of you. You know when you imagine what some place is going to be like before you go there but when you get there it is totally different to your imagination? That's how reliable your imagination is! Stop trusting your imagination so much. I've long since stopped bothering to imagine what others think of me because so often I've turned out to be wrong.

Stop Smoking for the Last Time: How to Use Mind Power to Break Addictions

By Rev. George Wissing
Author of Stop Smoking for the Last Time

Most smokers and overeaters believe they lack willpower and most, who do not have these addictions, tend to agree. Yet, is willpower what really helps people break these addictions? What is the mind power that truly helps kick bad habits?

The common use of the word willpower has come to mean “self-control”. This common definition means that a person should be able to use self control to win a battle against the urge to smoke or overeat over a lifetime.

Isn’t a better strategy to eliminate the urge completely? —To have a final energetic event, a complete shift in perception, that simply ends the urge? Simply, the best way to stop smoking or overeating, is to have an energetic event within the mind that ends the desire completely. This is sometimes called spontaneous remission— the “ah ha” moment— the way millions “just quit”.

Sex and Chocolate Boost Brain Power

By Lewis Carter
Source: The Telegraph

Lots of sex, dark chocolate and the Scandinavian routine of cold meat for breakfast are the best ways to boost brain power, a new book claims.

And watching soap operas, mixing with serial moaners and fat-free diets should be avoided in the quest for increased mental ability, the book says.

Much of the advice in Teach Yourself Training Your Brain is unconventional, but its co-authors, Terry Horne and Simon Wootton, say it is based on leading scientific research.

They claim that people can combat the considered wisdom that the brain deteriorates with age.

Mr Horne, a university lecturer, said: "For decades we have thought that the capacity of our brains is genetically determined, whereas it's now clear it's a lifestyle choice.

83 Unique Exercises to Keep Your Brain Alive

A Discussion With Lawrence C. Katz, PhD,
Co-author of "Keep Your Brain Alive: 83 Neurobic Exercises"

Have you ever searched in vain for your glasses, only to find them perched on top of your head? How many times have you gone shopping and later been unable to find your car in the parking lot? You may tell yourself such things are all part of getting older -- but are they?

Lawrence C. Katz, PhD, recognizes the tremendous need to understand what happens to our brains as we age, and knows that the way we live our lives affects our brains for a long time. Together with co-author Manning Rubin, Dr. Katz developed "neurobics" -- brain exercises that affect how our brains are actually used. He explained the basics of this exciting program in our conversation with him.

What is the new science of brain exercise?

What your brain does most is form associations between different senses -- that's what your brain is really good at; that's what it is designed to do. The basic idea behind brain exercises is to use your brain's natural desire to form associations, to do things in different ways that cause it to form new associations. The capacity of the brain to form new associations is essentially unlimited.

When your brain does this it causes brain cells to become more active. And when cells are more active they produce molecules that, in turn, "fertilize" nerve cells, keeping them healthier and more resistant to the assaults of old age. It used to be thought that as you get older, you lose nerve cells. That's not really the case.

Brain Boosting Drugs Spark Ethical Debate

By Ben Hirschler
Source: Reuters

A rise in healthy people popping pills to boost performance in exams or work, raises long-term ethical and safety concerns about the effects of such treatments, British doctors said on Thursday.

The British Medical Association (BMA) wants a public debate about the risks and benefits of using drugs to improve memory and concentration, sometimes called "cognitive enhancement".

The ability of prescription drugs and medical procedures to improve intellectual performance is likely to increase significantly in the next 20 to 30 years as technology advances.

"We know that there is likely to be a demand by healthy individuals for this treatment," Dr Tony Calland, chairman of the BMA's Medical Ethics Committee said at the launch of a discussion paper on the issue.

"However, given that no drug or invasive medical procedure is risk free, is it ethical to make them available to people who are not ill?"

I Was a Neuroscience Guinea Pig: How Scientists Scrambled My Brain

By Lisa Katayama
Source: Wired.com

I feel like the hoodlum Alex in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange: My head is held steady by a chin strap, while two technicians grease my scalp with conductive gel and slip on a cap bristling with electrodes.

I'm about to have my brain scrambled -- electrically -- in the name of medical science. Scientists are going to knock out regions of my brain while I perform a memory test.

"We're ready to do some zapping!" one of the technicians says excitedly.

I'm a guinea pig in a brain-scan experiment conceived by neuroscientist Adam Gazzaley, who is testing how memory changes with age. The "zapping" induces seizures in some subjects and cures depression in others. I don't know what it will do to me, but I'm about to find out.

Old Brain, New Tricks

By Cara Feinberg
Source: Boston Globe

Esref Armagan is a 52-year-old Turkish painter who has been blind in both eyes since the day he was born. He has never seen a coffee cup, a toothbrush, an elephant, or a tree-lined street, but he can draw them each, from any perspective, with or without shadows depending on the time of day.

His portrait of President Clinton, which he painted from an embossed photograph, looks, well, like Clinton-complete with grey hair and bulbous nose-and though Armagan has never had an art lesson, the streets he paints stretch into the distance as converging parallel lines.

For years, Armagan has been a phenomenon in the art world, displaying his work in museums around the globe. But it was not until two summers ago, when he traveled to Boston, that scientists were able to study precisely how he generates such images.

Their hope was that he might teach them something about neural ''plasticity"--the brain's ability to reorganize its functions based on new information and experiences. If Armagan had never seen with his eyes, how had his brain adapted to give him visual representations of the world, and more importantly, what could it reveal about brain adaptation in general?

How Hypnosis Boosts Your Immune System

By Steve G. Jones
Better Living With Hypnosis

The mind/body connection has long been understood by hypnotherapists. In fact, the mind has such a powerful impact over physical well being that people have been known to “will” themselves into better health or even to death. Hypnosis works to keep the body healthy by boosting the immune system through positive thought processes that reduce stress and ignite the body’s own healing abilities.

Emotional stress has such a destructive impact on health. When stress is left unchecked, it causes the body to have a continual release of the hormone cortisol which can negatively impact such things as blood pressure and cholesterol. This can ultimately lead to heart disease. Hypnosis works to relax the mind and body to reduce stress and cortisol production. In addition, hypnosis can boost the immune system by acting as a catalyst to wound healing and vitamin absorption as it eliminates stress.

A study of 33 medical students was conducted by the Ohio State University and reports that self-hypnosis was able to reduce stress and lead to strengthened immune systems in the sub-group given the hypnotic relaxation training. These students experienced less anxiety during exam time. In addition, blood tests indicated greater immune responses as T-cells in their blood were studied both before stressful periods and during them.

Hypnosis is used at a time of day when the participant is able to completely relax, usually just before going to sleep. Self-hypnosis will not be effective if there are other distractions such as driving a car or doing tasks around the house. The mind needs to relax to the point where the hypnotic messages can completely penetrate the subconscious. This way the stress that can hinder the immune system can be removed and the body can become strengthened.

Clinical Hypnotherapist, Steve G. Jones’ program Immune System Booster is used over the course of a few weeks to reduce stress and improve immune system function.
