How to Explore Alternate Realities With Your Mind

By Burt Goldman/ Creator of Quantum Jumping

In 2005, then 78-year old Burt Goldman approached us about his new project, Quantum Jumping. Burt claimed that he developed a program that teaches people how to tap into alternative realities to gain wisdom, ideas and insights to help them achieve their goals.

The idea seemed too far-fetched and we quickly dismissed it. But, we were intrigued. After all Burt is one of the most respected personal growth teachers in the United States. He had studied for years under the late Paramahansa Yogananda and Jose Silva and became the #1 instructor in the Silva Method organization. He chaired the Mind Science congress in Athens in front of 2000 people his clients have included celebrities and even middle eastern royalty.

But despite all this, his Quantum Jumping idea seemed so 'out there', that we thought it would be too risky to publish him.

Then in 2008 Burt came back to us. The 81-year old 'monk' had changed. In a few short years he had developed a thriving online meditation company; he had learned photography and gotten his art into galleries around the world; and he even recorded an album (and the guy had JUST turned 81)!

It was then we finally decided to give Quantum Jumping a chance. Even if it was hard to believe, the idea of an 81-year old man doing so much in such a short span of time intrigued us and we wanted to know more. So how did he do it?
Burt credited it all to Quantum Jumping.

The Mind-Controlled Exoskeleton of the Future

My mother - afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy - spent much of her life bound to a wheelchair. Although she was not paralyzed, her legs were far too weak to carry her own weight. As a result, there were some things she simply was not capable of doing. It was a reality we all had to live with, sadly.

Although she has passed away, others like her may one day soon be able to walk, thanks to an innovation being showcased at this year's world cup in São Paulo this June.

There, a paralyzed young man will use a robotic exoskeleton to take the field and deliver the first kick of the games. The coolest part is that he'll be doing this by thought alone - he'll be operating the machine with his mind.

Awesome, right? With tech like this, being rendered paraplegic will no longer bind you to a wheelchair or the bed. People with physical disabilities will be able to move around just like anyone else. It's been hailed by its creator, Miguel Nicolelis, as a medical milestone; a miracle of technology akin to putting a man on the moon.

Your First Baby Steps toward an Out-of-Body Experience

You can have an out of body experience right now, and it isn't even that hard. Some people can do it more easily than others, and it may take a little practice. But it is something that anybody can do, and it can be done scientifically.

Let's start with a question: Where do you feel like the center of your "self" is right now? Most people feel like the center of their consciousness—the vantage from which they are experiencing the world—is somewhere behind their eyes.

This makes sense: Your eyes are there, your ears are there, and even your mouth and your nose are there. Four out of five of your senses are all focused in a single area, so it's no surprise that you feel like the center of your self is "in your head."

The Strange New World of Do-It-Yourself Brain Stimulation

When Brent Williams got to RadioShack that day in the spring of 2012, he knew exactly what he was looking for: a variable resistor, a current regulator, a circuit board, and a 9-volt battery.

The total came to around $20. Williams is tall and balding, with wire-rim glasses that make him look like an engineer, which he is. He directs a center on technology in education at Kennesaw State University and is the kind of guy who spends his free time chatting up people on his ham radio or trying to glimpse a passing comet with his telescope. But this project was different.

When he got home, he took his supplies into his office. He heated up his soldering iron, hoping his wife wouldn't see what he was up to. He fished a few wires out of his desk and built a simple circuit. Using alligator clips, he connected the circuit to two kitchen sponges soaked in saline and strapped them to his head with a sweatband. He positioned one sponge just above his right eyebrow and the other up high on the left side of his forehead. Then he snapped the battery into place, turned a small dial, and sent an electric current into his brain.

Brain Zaps Can Trigger Lucid Dreams

Lucid dreams, in which people are aware of and can control their dreams, are rare. But now scientists have found they can induce this weird state of mind in people by zapping their brains with a specific frequency of electricity.

"I never thought this would work," said study researcher Dr. John Allan Hobson, a psychiatrist and longtime sleep researcher at Harvard University. "But it looks like it does."

The results showed that when the inexperienced dreamers were zapped with a current of 40 Hertz, 77 percent of the time these participants reported having what were described as lucid dreams.

"They were really excited," said study researcher Ursula Voss, of J.W. Goethe-University Frankfurt, who designed the experiments. "The dream reports were short, but long enough for them to report, 'Wow, all of the sudden I knew this was a dream, while I was dreaming.'"

Sleep Programming

Meditation Techniques for Better Sleep

By Remez Sasson,
Author of
How to Focus Your Mind

Do you fall asleep immediately after entering bed or do thoughts and worries begin to flow into your mind, keeping your sleep away? Do you find it hard to stop them?

When you are in bed at night there are fewer outside distractions, it is quiet and dark, and therefore you are more aware of the movements of your mind.

You feel that thoughts are attacking you, not giving you a moment's rest, especially if you are experiencing some problems in your life.

If you are not healthy you will probably think about your health. If you have problems at work, then thoughts about these problems will probably flood your mind. A child will have thoughts about his parents, teachers or examinations, and a businessman about his work. Thoughts, worries and fears that are usually repressed during the day surface up and swarm the mind.

What would be willing to do to free yourself from these nibbling, restless thoughts that prevent you from falling asleep? Won't you be happy to be able to silence all the thoughts that pop up when you are in bed?

How to Manifest For Free

By Nelson Berry
Creator of Subliminal Video Messages

I am constantly receiving emails that say something like this: "Please send me something that is free that will cause me to attract money so that I can have money to pay for other things needed. Thank you."

This is a typical example of e-mails that are arriving from around the world from people who just don't get it.

So what I wanted to do was give anybody the opportunity to manifest anything that they wanted to for basically free. The only thing that you need is a couple of good pencils or pens, and a notebook, just a standard, regular notebook.

So how do we do this?

Firstly this is a daily exercise. You don't miss a day. Second thing to remember is what we're doing is creating the future. It's a four step sequence. And so, without further ado, let's go ahead and get started.

How to Make Money Buy Happiness

What are you spending all that money on?

After reading this blog for a while, you already know what's good for you, but there is still the odd slip-up. A few hundred disappear here and there for the odd fancypants luxury, or a few thousand on trips or keeping the BMW X5 around because hey, you deserve it, and Mr. Money Mustache can't actually see you driving it and bike over to punch you in the face.

And if it's not you, it is your spouse. You were born with spartan tendencies and actually enjoy line-drying your clothes and chopping wood on a crisp winter day. But he or she was raised differently and just feels better with those leather seats, or the extra-large sports television, or the nutritious $10 single servings from Whole Foods or the air conditioning set nice and cool all summer. You've tried to bring the issue up gently, but a marriage is worth more than money, right?

The best way to get to the root of all this spending is to realize what we are all really trying to buy. In fact, it is the reason for every single action we take in our lives. It's happiness.

Was Yoda a Good Guru?

Something always bothered me about Star Wars. It wasn't Lucas' re-editing or the three prequels damned to sci-fi hell by angry nerds -- I always thought Yoda made no sense.

The little green guru was supposed to be profound and insightful but what emerged from his backwards speech struck me as banal. Yoda's lines about fear and bravery sounded less like philosophy honed by 900 years and more like the vacuous pronouncements of a life coach.

On top of all that, I wasn't sure that Yoda's advice was even helpful. Instructing Luke to never get angry, to never fear his enemies, seemed ignorant of human nature -- perhaps even psychologically harmful. So I asked a psychologist to find out if Yoda's advice was psychologically any good.

Can Dreams Reveal Winning Lottery Numbers?

By Randall Fitzgerald / Source: Skeptical Enquirer

Every once in a while the news media reports on how a state lottery jackpot winner claimed to have seen the winning numbers in a dream. Time magazine profiled one such dreamer in December 2005, a 43-year-old Pakistani immigrant named Ihsanullah Khan, who drove a taxi cab in Washington and saw the numbers 2,4,6,17,25 and 31 appear in one of his dreams. He played those numbers and won a $55 million lottery jackpot.

But for those of you seeking quick shortcuts to riches, there’s a catch to this story --- Khan had his prophetic dream and then spent the next 15 years playing the lottery using those numbers until his combination turned up. This is the sort of dedication and confidence that’s sometimes required if our dreams are to come true.

How many other people have had similar intuitive dreams, I wondered, but dismissed the numbers that appeared as unimportant and failed to play them? More importantly, are there any dreamers who regularly intuit winning numbers and actually play them to win money? I began searching for such a gifted dreamer and may have found one in Florida.

Future Brain Implants Will Restore Lost Memories

In the next few months, highly secretive US military researchers say they will unveil new advances toward developing a brain implant that could one day restore a wounded soldier's memory.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is forging ahead with a four-year plan to build a sophisticated memory stimulator, as part of President Barack Obama's $100 million initiative to better understand the human brain.

The science has never been done before, and raises ethical questions about whether the human mind should be manipulated in the name of staving off war injuries or managing the aging brain.

Scientists Discover Plants That Can Learn and Remember

New research from a team of scientists at the University of Western Australia will change the way you think about the difference between plants and animals. Mimosa pundica plants, they found, can learn and remember, despite not having a brain. Those active little fern-like things always did seem sort of smart, though, didn't they?

Ganja Yoga: Marijuana plus Meditation

By David Silverberg / Globe and Mail

They chat away breezily between vaporizer tokes, sometimes veering off into conspiracy theories about the government or discussions of the healthiest way to smoke marijuana. Then the 12 yoga lovers extend their arms and breathe deeply. Yoga mats cover the floor. A guitarist strums chords as incense weaves its tendrils across the room.

As the light haze of pot smoke dissipates in the downtown Toronto living room, the ganja yoga session begins.

“When you’re high, you can focus better on your breath,” says Dee Dussault, who runs a monthly session of “cannabis-enhanced yoga” at her home dubbed Follow Your Bliss.

She says smoking marijuana in small doses before a yoga class also makes students more receptive to the poses and philosophies behind the activities. “For some people, it makes them uninhibited and open to the idea of the heart chakra, for example.”

Heart chakras aside, ganja yoga has the THC whiff of being the latest yoga fad, following on the heels of hot yoga, circus yoga, pre- and postnatal yoga, acro yoga (acrobatics), even hip-hop yoga. While cannabis has been deeply entwined with spiritualism over the centuries, some yoga practitioners say that a pure body is ideal for the exercise and that smoking pot could cause an unwieldy imbalance. As one online-forum commenter opined: “Why should we try to purify our body and soul through yoga if we later intoxicate it again with marijuana or other substances?”

Is Non-conformity a Mental Illness?

Modern psychiatry has become a hotbed of corruption, particularly the kind that seeks to demonize and declare mentally ill anyone who deviates from what is regarded as the norm. This is abundantly evident in the latest installment of the industry's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, which dubs people who do not conform to what those in charge declare to be normal as mentally insane.

The so-called "condition" for why a person might choose to resist conformity has been labeled by the psychiatric profession as "oppositional defiant disorder," or ODD. The new DSM defines this made-up disease as an "ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior," and also lumps it in alongside attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, another made-up condition whose creator, Dr. Leon Eisenberg, admitted it to be phony on his death bed.

The Salesman's Guide to Manipulating Your Friends

By Alex Mayyasi / Source: Priceonomics Blog

A common convention used when pricing a product is to offer 3 different prices - a premium option, a normal option, and a budget option. Even if you would prefer to offer just one product at one price, the three tier option is usually better.

Why? Because when it comes to making decisions based on prices, people are easily manipulated. Here is a good example that summarizes an experiment from the book Priceless:
"People were offered 2 kinds of beer: a premium beer for $2.50 and a bargain beer for $1.80. Around 80% chose the more expensive beer.
"Now a third beer was introduced, a super bargain beer for $1.60 in addition to the previous two. Now 80% bought the $1.80 beer and the rest the $2.50 beer. Nobody bought the cheapest option.
"Third time around, they removed the $1.60 beer and replaced it with a super premium $3.40 beer. Most people chose the $2.50 beer, a small number the $1.80 beer and around 10% opted for the most expensive $3.40 beer. Some people will always buy the most expensive option, no matter the price."

How to Read the Mind of a Coma Patient

"Imagine you wake up, locked inside a box," says Adrian Owen. "It's only just big enough to hold your body but sufficiently small that you can't move.

"It's a perfect fit, down to every last one of your fingers and toes. It's a strange box because you can listen to absolutely everything going on around you, yet your voice cannot be heard. In fact, the box fits so tightly around your face and lips that you can't speak, or make a noise. Although you can see everything going on around the box, the world outside is oblivious to what's going on inside.

"Inside, there's plenty of time to think. At first, this feels like a game, even one that is strangely amusing. Then, reality sets in. You're trapped. You see and hear your family lamenting your fate. Over the years, the carers forget to turn on the TV. You're too cold. Then you're too hot. You're always thirsty. The visits of your friends and family dwindle. Your partner moves on. And there's nothing you can do about it."

8 People Who Got Superpowers From Brain Trauma

Most of us have wished we might suddenly wake up richer, taller, thinner or better-looking at some point. But Jason Padgett really did wake up a changed man.

Previously a school drop-out who worked in his dad's furniture shop and was the life and soul of the party, at the age of 31 he was left a maths and physics genius overnight after being hit on the head during a mugging.

Diagnosed with acquired savant syndrome, in which brain injuries turn previously normal people into experts in maths, art or music, Jason, 43, is one of few people in the world who can draw fractals by hand. The images are repeated geometric patters and can take him weeks – if not months to finish.

He's in good company. While a head injury is undoubtedly a traumatic experience, for some it provided an unexpected epiphany, too.

How to Become A Master of Life

By Stuart Goldsmith, Author of The Midas Method

Do you sometimes feel stressed and fed-up with life? Want to be happy? Joyful? Well I wonder if joy really is the state to aim for... Is it even possible?

When you think about it, intense happiness and joy are, by their nature, short lived. Note the use of the words 'by their nature.' This implies that you cannot artificially sustain joy, say by maintaining or increasing the stimulus which produced it.

You know those Amazonian insect-eating plants? Once an insect has triggered the plant to close, no amount of further stimulation will have the slightest effect for several hours. You can put that plant on a lead and take it for a walk through a swarm of flies, and its lips will remain stubbornly sealed.

Our 'joy' mechanism is similar.

Once triggered, it activates, and then a certain time period must elapse before it can be triggered again. It is has filled its purpose; I will explain what that is in a moment.

The same is true of intense happiness. We feel this fleeting, wonderfully positive response when one of our needs starts to be met.

Carefully note those last words.

I did not say 'when one of our needs is fully met.' Joy or intense happiness is our reward to ourselves for taking good care of the organism, just a pain is the opposite.
