Happiness Is Free

I don't really care that much whether people listen to me. I used to think, once upon a time as a young lad, that I'd make a name for myself, do something grand and impressive, change the world and all that stuff. I don't care about that anymore.

Now, I'd rather not be famous. The more I've learned, the more I've come to lean toward the conclusion that the best thing in the world is for the world to leave you alone.

There is ultimately nothing to accomplish in life. You don't need to be rich or well-liked or of prestigious social standing. You don't need much of anything to be happy. You just need to focus on being happy, because you can only do one thing at a time in life.

20 Things You Need To Let Go To Be Happy

Let Go Let God

Everyone has one common goal in life: to achieve true happiness. The biggest factor holding us back from achieving our dreams is, simply and sadly, our own selves. We put limitations on ourselves everyday, whether intentionally or unintentionally. There are so many ways we can alleviate these restraints.

Remember, life can either be something you embrace or something you hide from. Stop making things complicated and just live your life. It would be so much simpler and more enjoyable if we learned to just release certain limitations.

Let's take a look at the things you need to let go of in order to become a happier person.

The Secret to Achieving Your Dreams No One Tells You About

The Happiness Track
By Emma M. Seppälä Ph.D,
Author of
The Happiness Track

A Stanford student announced that she had to drop out of the Happiness class. “When I asked her why, instructor Carole Pertofsky shared with me, she said that it went against everything she had been taught: ‘My parents told me that my job in life was to be very, very successful. As I got older, I asked my parents what I needed to do to be very successful, and they said to work very, very hard. As time went by, I asked them, how do I know when I’m working hard enough, and they said, “When you’re suffering.” While this answer may seem shocking and wrong, many of us have bought into the idea that, in order to be successful, you have to sacrifice your happiness.

After working in many high-achieving environments like Yale, Stanford, Silicon Valley, New York City, I noticed too many people were pursuing “success” at a cost to themselves. They were postponing their happiness now in pursuit of success with the idea that, when they attain success, they will be happy. Yet they were burning themselves out (and others) in the process. I, too, joined the rat race because it seemed like what everyone was doing. It seemed like the right thing to do. But it wasn’t.
When I looked at the research, I saw that—overwhelmingly— happiness is actually the secret to success.
Success looks different for each person - for one, success is being able to attain a professional goal, for another it's a personal goal - like being a terrific parent. Either way, if you prioritize your happiness, you will actually be more productive, more creative, more resilient, more energized, more charismatic and influential. You will have more willpower and be more focused, with less effort.

That’s why I wrote my book The Happiness Track.

Top 10 Happiness Books to Improve Your Mood

The year is still young, and as we think of making and breaking those inevitable New Year's resolutions, we cannot help but ask: Why can't we just be happy?
It is the perfect time to look at new books on happiness and the psychology of happiness and see what developments have emerged in the last few years.

While the positive psychology movement began in the late 1990s with Martin E.P. Seligman as its recognized guru, self-help sections in bookstores have recently seen increased demand for books on happiness.

In 2009, Psychology Today described what it saw as a "happiness frenzy" with "4,000 books published in 2008 while a mere 50 books were published on the topic in 2000."

The books listed below should satisfy readers wanting to know how they can become happier right now. "Rather than pursue the state of happiness," write the authors ofThe Creativity Cure, "we believe in pursuing habits that give rise to happiness, thereby creating more opportunities for experiencing moments of joy, inspiration, purpose and meaning."

The Happiest Countries on Earth

By Francesca Levy/ Source: Forbes
In the wake of their World Cup loss, residents of the Netherlands may be feeling depressed. But there's reason to believe they won't be done in by the agony of defeat: According to a recent poll, the country is one of the happiest in the world.

Championship-winning Spain, on the other hand, was swept with euphoria and national pride, but that may have been an unfamiliar feeling. The country ranks No. 17 of 21 European countries in terms of happiness.
The fact is good times probably have more to do with the size of your wallet than the size of your trophy shelf. The five happiest countries in the world -- Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands -- are all clustered in the same region, and all enjoy high levels of prosperity.
