Tylenol vs. Existential Dread

Acetaminophen, the main ingredient in some pain relievers like Tylenol, may ease minor aches, reduce a fever, and apparently make you feel less weird after watching a David Lynch movie or thinking about your own death.

New research shows Tylenol may have the unseen psychological side-effect of easing existential dread. The findings suggest anxiety about finding meaning in life and feeling physical pain may be rooted in the same part of the brain.

"When people feel overwhelmed with uncertainty in life or distressed by a lack of purpose, what they're feeling may actually be painful distress," said study researcher Daniel Randles, a doctoral student in psychology the University of British Columbia.

3 Evil Ways to Manipulate People

By Melanie Pinola

You can do a lot of things to be more persuasive, from learning better ways to communicate to more shady manipulation techniques. Here are some of the easiest (and possibly evil) ways to get someone to say "yes."

1. Scaring The Hell Out of You: The Fear-Then-Relief Procedure

What it is: Arguably the most evil manipulative technique is what psychologists call the "fear-then-relief technique." The technique preys on a person's emotions. Here, the manipulator causes someone a great deal of stress or anxiety and then abruptly relieves that stress. After this sudden mood swing, the person is disarmed, less likely to make mindful or rational decisions, and more likely to respond positively to various requests.

"Everything I Have I Owe to Alternate Universes"

By Burt Goldman / Creator of Quantum Jumping

I’m 81 years old, and in many ways, I’m just like any other person my age—I relish peace and quiet, I like spending time with my grandchildren, and I enjoy nothing more than sitting down to a good book.

I think it’s fair to say I’ve gone past my physical prime. No surprises there. But in the past few years, I’ve accomplished a variety of things that even I can’t wrap my head around. A handful of them include:

  • Took up painting just before I turned 80—and my artwork hangs in a museum to prove it.
  • With no knowledge of photography, got my photographs into the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
  • Out of nowhere, found the inspiration to write multiple novels—including my first Western.
  • Started a million-dollar online business.

In the space of just a few years, how on earth did a normal American senior citizen like myself accomplish not one, but multiple goals that some people spend their entire lives chasing?

Can Evolution Explain the Placebo Effect?

On the face of it, the placebo effect makes no sense. Someone suffering from a low-level infection will recover just as nicely whether they take an active drug or a simple sugar pill. This suggests people are able to heal themselves unaided - so why wait for a sugar pill to prompt recovery?

New evidence from a computer model offers a possible evolutionary explanation, and suggests that the immune system has an on-off switch controlled by the mind.

It all starts with the observation that something similar to the placebo effect occurs in many animals, says Peter Trimmer, a biologist at the University of Bristol, UK.

The Subconscious Mind Never Forgets

Today we would like to focus your attention on the topic of memory; more specifically we would like to discuss how you can access your subconscious mind and its limitless capacity to retain information.

This message is specifically for those who are having trouble remembering, as well as for those who are interested in learning about yet another ability of your conscious and subconscious mind.

Why is it that some people have wonderful memories while others seem to forget just about everything? You see the human memory is a funny thing.

In actuality everyone has a flawless memory. How can this be? All information which you consciously encounter is instantly downloaded into the subconscious mind however you can only access this "memory" if your conscious mind allows you to do so.

Superstitions Bring Good Luck

By Amber Angelle / Life's Little Mysteries

The next time you cross your fingers or tell someone to break a leg, you may actually be bringing some luck.

Superstitious ways of bringing good luck are found in cultures around the world, and it turns out they may be ubiquitous for a very good reason: To some extent, superstitions work.

New research shows that believing in, say, the power of a good luck charm can actually help improve performance in certain situations, even though the charm and event aren't logically linked.

This is what a team of psychologists at the University of Cologne in Germany report in the May issue of the journal Psychological Science. In a series of experiments employing tasks involving memory and motor skills, the scientists studied the effect of behavior and "object superstitions" – which rely on good luck charms – in college students.

The Digital Drug That Gives An All-Natural High

Digital Drug
Source: All Natural High

All Natural High is an audio recording which uses special sounds to help shift your brainwave patterns -- recreating states of euphoria, excitement and mental agility.

In this article, we'll look at why this happens, and the science behind it.

Brainwaves and how they affect you

Every state of mind has a particular "signature" attached to it. This is represented by your brainwave patterns (or "frequency").

For example, if you're in a state of deep focus, your brainwaves are likely to be in the Alpha frequency range of 8-12Hz. Other specific frequency patterns exist for states such as sleep, creativity, and general happiness.

These frequencies can be measured using powerful scientific tools, such as an EEG machine. (Also known as an electroencephalograph machine.)

In the 1830s, scientists discovered that by playing certain frequencies through the ears, the brain "followed" those frequencies. This is a powerful process known as "brainwave entrainment."

By changing your brainwave frequencies, you could change your state - encouraging focus, creativity, sleep, or mood improvement, for example.

Scientists Grow Tiny Human Brain in Lab

Miniature "human brains" have been grown in a lab in a feat scientists hope will transform the understanding of neurological disorders.

The pea-sized structures reached the same level of development as in a nine-week-old foetus, but are incapable of thought.

The study, published in the journal Nature, has already been used to gain insight into rare diseases.

In Search of David Copperfield's Fountain of Youth

By Adam Leith Gollner,
Author
The Book of Immortality

Several years ago, the magician David Copperfield issued a press release stating he'd discovered the fountain of youth on his private islands in the Bahamas. "We found this liquid that in its simple stages can actually do miraculous things," Copperfield claimed. "You can take dead leaves, they come into contact with the water, they become full of life again. Bugs or insects that are near death come in contact with the water, they fly away. It's an amazing thing, very exciting."

Copperfield had hired biologists and geologists to examine the fountain's potential effects on humans. Until the tests were carried out, the magician said, he was refusing anyone else access to the water. Its precise location--a spot where "everything is more vibrant, ageless, and full of life"--is a secret.

Can Science Cure Religious Extremism?

Religious fundamentalism and cruelty to children may one day be treated in the same way as mental illness, a neuroscientist has speculated.

Kathleen Taylor, a research scientist at Oxford University's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, says strong negative beliefs could be eradicated using techniques already in the works.

Dr Taylor was speaking at the Hay Literary Festival in Wales when she was asked what she forsaw as positive developments in neuroscience in the coming years, The Times reports.

She replied: "One man's positive can be another man's negative. One of the surprises may be to see people with certain beliefs as people who can be treated.

"Someone who has for example become radicalised to a cult ideology – we might stop seeing that as a personal choice that they have chosen as a result of pure free will and may start treating it as some kind of mental disturbance.

How to Release Anger, Get Rid of Pain, and Finally Enjoy Peace

In 1952, at age 42, a wealthy New York physicist and entrepreneur was sent home to die.

His body was riddled with disease, and he had less than two weeks to live.

Confounded by his condition, he decided to 'figure out' how to cure himself.

A short time later, that man, Lester Levenson, discovered something so transformative that he rid himself of all his physical problems and entered a state of profound peace that never left him through the day he died on January 18, 1994 … an amazing 42 years later.

What Lester discovered has passed on to Hale Dwoskin, who has helped hundreds of thousands in the last 30 years.

Hale created a very popular, professional self-study course, and now you get to use it for free for six days in September.

How to Heal Yourself (and lose weight) with Mind Power

What is the cause of as much as 90% of illnesses?
The answer will surprise you.

According to the legendary Jose Silva, after 50 years of research, he said "90% of all illnesses are caused by the mind."

Today, science is discovering so much more about the mind and it's influence on the body that many are saying that this is probably true.

But just how powerful is the mind's hold on the body?

Listen to this....

It's a story featured in Shawn Achor's book, The Happiness Advantage.

The Sneaky Mind Trick That Made Them Lose Weight Automatically

It started when scientists were studying a particular group of hotel maids.
They realized the maids are often clinically obese even though they worked very hard on a daily basis. I mean, running up and down floors and changing bed covers, carrying heavy vacuum cleaners and flipping over mattresses is actually pretty hard work.

By right, these maids should be burning more calories than the average women. But why were they still obese?

Baffled, the researchers decided to dive into that question.

They created a fake survey to quiz those hotel maids for feedback regarding their work.

But in reality, the survey had nothing to do with their "work".

Instead, during the survey, researchers planted an idea in each of those hotel maid's minds.

And the idea was this. At the end of each "fake" survey, the researcher would say something along these lines to the maid:

"Wow Caroline, by the way, based on what you're telling me you're working really hard and you should be burning about a 1000 calories a day. That's equivalent to a good cardio workout. You must be really fit."
That's all.

Thats all the researchers said. The weird thing is, after 30 days, when the researchers tested the maids again, they found that these group of maids had lost weight and lowered their cholesterol more than the group of maids who were told nothing.

Isn't that incredible?

Simply by planting an idea in someone's mind, could directly affect their bodies.
That's the power of your mind over your body.

Here's How to Utilize This Amazing Power

It's the biggest online event in healing that's happening right now.
The idea is to get free healing information and insights out to millions.
Information that helps promote the understanding of the crucial role our minds plays in healing.

Take a peek. This is NOT something you will see very often.

Russell Targ and the Reality of ESP

The Reality of ESP
I recently had the privilege of interviewing Russell Targ, an eminent physicist and researcher in extra-sensory perception.

He has quite a professional pedigree: Not only is he one of the great minds who developed the laser, he also helped to manage the US Army's "Remote Viewing" program: An experimental unit devoted to using psychic powers to spy on the Soviet Union and other enemies, in which participants were given a location thousands of miles away and told to try to visualize what they "saw" there in their minds.

Targ's latest book, The Reality of ESP: A Physicist's Proof of Psychic Abilities, collects data obtained over the course of many years spent studying ESP, including from his years managing Remote Viewers.

It's a a great read, even if you don't believe in psychic powers at all. Targ is certainly convinced that there's something there. After the military shuttered the psychic spy program, Targ and a bunch of psychics got together to attempt to predict stock market fluctuations, and were actually successful doing so. It still could be chance, but Targ presents some compelling evidence that it wasn't.

Orgasms Better Than Sudoku for Brain Power

According to Professor Barry Komisaruk, orgasms are more stimulating to the brain than solving a crossword puzzle or a completing a Sudoku table.

Komisaruk, 72, is a neuroscientist who has done a lot of research into the relationship between orgasms and brain activity. He claims that the sensation increases total brain activity, whereas a puzzle activates only relatively localized regions.

He published the first evidence of brain regions involved in orgasm in women ten years ago.
