The Coming Brain Revolution: This Is Your Brain on Neurotechnology

By Surfdaddy Orca / Source: HPlusMagazine

Neurotechnology is a somewhat daunting term used to describe a wide range of technologies. At MIT, there is a flurry of research dollars going into diagnostic imaging of the brain through methods such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), neuropharmacology (drugs, including painkillers and antidepressants, that affect brain and nervous system functioning), enhancements or replacements for sensory or motor systems (cochlear or retinal implants, "smart" prosthetics) and neurostimulation through implanted electrodes to treat diseases such as Parkinson's or to restore mobility to paralyzed patients.

This can be pretty esoteric stuff for a lay reader. But Zack Lynch's new book The Neuro Revolution: How Brain Science Is Changing Our World (St. Martin's Press, July 2009) does an excellent job of laying out the scientific impact of neurotechnology on such diverse areas as financial markets, law enforcement, politics, advertising and marketing, artistic expression, and warfare.

It is written in language that should be comfortable for Wall Street financiers, marketeers, scientists, software developers, artists, theologians, and even poker players -- as well as any reader of popular science interested in where technology is going.

How Your Brain Can Protect You From Cancer

Source: Pysorg.com

Scientists have been aware for many years that if cancer patients are not able to deal with the stress associated with being sick, the cancer will progress faster than in calmer patients. To counteract this phenomenon, physicians encourage treatments that help cancer patients handle their stress.

Scientists theorized that the stress relief may have come as a result of increased beta-endorphin peptide (BEP), the "feel good" hormones in the brain that are released during exercise, a good conversation, and many other aspects of life that give humans pleasure.

Researchers at Rutgers hypothesized that BEP producing neurons do not just make us feel good, but also play roles in regulating the stress response and immune functions to control tumor growth and progression. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Dr. Dipak K. Sarkar and his colleagues demonstrate the physical mechanisms that support their hypothesis.

Anti-Aging Advice from a 96-year-old Hottie

By Francesca Biller-Safran / Source: Huffington Post

"Don't spend a lot of time with old people, they just make you feel older," my 96-year old grandmother told me at our latest luncheon.

After finishing off a large Caesar Salad and her second glass of Ice Tea, she stood and pointed to her new three inch caramel-colored Ferragamo heels she bought on sale. "Aren't they just darling?" she asked.

"They match my sweater set just perfectly," she said as she skimmed her body like a Miss USA contestant.

This continual zest for life and fun is just one trait that makes my paternal grandma the most youthful and hip person that I know.

Dogs Are As Smart As a 2-year-old Child

Source: UPI

Dogs are as bright as a human toddler, a Canadian canine researcher told the American Psychological Association Saturday.

Stanley Coren of the University of British Columbia, speaking on the topic "How dogs think," said the average dog can understand about 150 words and signs and can practice intentional deceit on dogs and people.

"We all want insight into how our furry companions think, and we want to understand the silly, quirky and apparently irrational behaviors Lassie or Rover demonstrate," Coren said. "Their stunning flashes of brilliance and creativity are reminders that they may not be Einsteins but are sure closer to humans than we thought."

Mind-to-Mind Connection: How to Influence People With Your Mind

By Jim Francis
Source: Real Mind Power Secrets

It has long been suspected that your right cerebral hemisphere, when in the alpha state, operates in a realm where time and space are of no consequence. What you think affects others...... and what others think affects you!

It is rather like the invisible connection between the earth's magnetic field and every magnetic compass on earth. They are interconnected. If the earth's magnetic field were to suddenly shift then every compass in existence would swing in unison. Likewise, if you suddenly move a magnetic compass, or any magnet for that matter, this movement will have a slight effect on the earth's entire magnetic field. Admittedly this would be so small as to be immeasurable but it would still be there.

Similarly, when you have a thought it “twitches” the entire human consciousness "thought field".

Rupert Sheldrake calls this the Morphogenetic Field. Karl Jung called it Collective Unconsciousness.

Jose Silva found a practical method of evoking and controlling this marvelous human ability at will.

The technique, which is amazingly simple, has been developed over the years but to this day more than 99% of the population are unaware of it.

Relax Your Way to Perfect Health

By Anastasia Stephens / Source: The Independent UK

It's a piece of advice that yogis have given for thousands of years: take a deep breath and relax. Watch the tension melt from your muscles and all your niggling worries vanish. Somehow we all know that relaxation is good for us. Now the hard science has caught up – for a comprehensive scientific study showing that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level has just been published.

What researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered is that, in long-term practitioners of relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation, far more "disease-fighting genes" were active, compared to those who practised no form of relaxation.

In particular, they found genes that protect from disorders such as pain, infertility, high blood pressure and even rheumatoid arthritis were switched on. The changes, say the researchers, were induced by what they call "the relaxation effect", a phenomenon that could be just as powerful as any medical drug but without the side-effects.

"We found that a range of disease-fighting genes were active in the relaxation practitioners that were not active in the control group," explains Dr Herbert Benson, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who led the research.

Did John Lennon Sell His Soul to Satan?

By Margaret C. Galitzin
Book review of The Lennon Prophecy by Joseph Niezgoda

A book by Joseph Niezgoda - The Lennon Prophecy, A New Examination of the Death Clues of the Beatles - makes a good case for John Lennon making a pact with Satan in exchange for fame and fortune.

The author is a first generation Beatle fan, has read every book out on the rock group, and admits conflict with his love of the music and the evil that he perceives surrounds it. His book – a 15-year project - was an effort, he said, to try to define or make sense of that evil.

In fact, this is the book I was always planning to write about the Beatles. Since I threw out my Beatles albums along with the rest of my rock music many years ago, I’ve been gathering facts about the clues and signs of a Satanic link, evidence of camaraderie with occultists and their dabbling with the occult. Believe me, plenty exists.

There is nothing new in the facts Niezgoda presents – they were all out there. He just brings “the clues” – as he calls them – together to make a convincing case of Lennon’s pact with Satan. I believe it’s a valid thesis, although I would go further and say the other Beatles’ also signed the contract. Throughout the book, he certainly implicates the whole group as linked to the occult.

Thinking Fast Can Make You Happy

By Siri Carpenter, Source: Scientific American

Lousy day? Don’t try to think happy thoughts—just think fast. A new study shows that accelerated thinking can improve your mood.

In six experiments, researchers at Princeton and Harvard universities made research participants think quickly by having them generate as many problem-solving ideas (even bad ones) as possible in 10 minutes, read a series of ideas on a computer screen at a brisk pace or watch an I Love Lucy video clip on fast-forward. Other participants performed similar tasks at a relaxed speed.

Results suggested that thinking fast made participants feel more elated, creative and, to a lesser degree, energetic and powerful. Activities that promote fast thinking, then, such as whipping through an easy crossword puzzle or brain-storming quickly about an idea, can boost energy and mood, says psychologist Emily Pronin, the study’s lead author.

How to Explode Your Confidence

By Steve G. Jones, Clinical Hypnotherapist
Creator of Confidence Beyond Belief

If you are not one hundred percent satisfied with the current status of your life as it is right now in terms of anything including relationships, finances, career, parenting, etc. there is only one thing that you need to assess and that's your decision making process.

You see, our lives are shaped by our experiences and all experiences are the result of a decision.

If you decide to touch a burning stove, the result will be that you get burned. If you decide to jump in a pool of water, the result will be that you get wet.

Sometimes however, the result that we experience from a decision isn't so clearly visible prior to making that decision.

In other words, we think that by making a certain decision, we will achieve a certain result but somehow that result turns into something else. And that's when things get tricky.

And this is why if areas of your life aren't moving along as planned, you must assess your decision making process.

Decisions are driven by two things; the confidence in one's ability to achieve a certain result and more importantly, emotions.

How to Be Immune to the Swine Flu Virus

Source: The One Minute Cure

ABC News reported yesterday that the outbreak of swine flu virus last spring was only a preview of the alarming events to come. The full onslaught of swine flu in the United States will make itself painfully known during the upcoming flu season, starting fairly early in September. It will most likely infect 30-40% of the U.S. population, or about 100 million people, according to flu expert Ira Longini, from the University of Washington's School of Public Health.

Initial supplies of the swine flu vaccine, which will be available sometime between mid- September to late October 2009, are expected to be very limited -- barely enough to inoculate the 160 million people who are at high risk of becoming infected. An even bigger concern is whether the fast-tracked vaccine is safe and effective -- since it's being rushed to market without the appropriate testing and safety evaluations.

It is a growing suspicion in the general population and among certain members of the medical community, including Dr. Joseph Mercola, the publisher of a popular self- titled natural health newsletter, that being exposed to this new swine flu vaccine might prove to be more dangerous than the swine flu itself.

A new book, The One-Minute Cure: The Secret to Healing Virtually All Diseases, offers compelling evidence that the swine flu virus can be rendered powerless in the body when one self-administers a natural oxygenating substance.

How Your Thoughts Can Affect Your Health

By Alexander R. Lees / Source: Natural News

Have you ever wondered if there is any scientific evidence supporting the notion of spontaneous remission, faith healing and other described miracles? Until recently there hasn`t been much scientific information to support these claims, but this is not to say that they don`t occur, because they do. There also hasn`t been much information about what we can do to assist in our own healing, until now.

The latest information emerging from the science labs is that we now have the opportunity to play a part in our own healing. According to leading scientists our thoughts can affect our health, both physically and emotionally, and there is data to prove it.

All things follow patterns, or at the very least, contain some. One of the consistent commonalities (patterns) is how much the thinking process of an individual contributes to whatever problem s/he may be experiencing

Dr. Deepak Chopra tells us we process some 60,000 thoughts daily. On one level, this is a good thing. By repeating many of the same thoughts daily, the world remains somewhat predictable, and most of the time is reasonably safe, and therefore knowable.

You Can Conquer Any Condition

By Guy Finley, Author of The Secret of Letting Go

We frequently feel ourselves to be under the power of things. We feel we are the victims of an unfair social system, economic upheavals, painful relationships -- even a lawn chair that won't unfold right. We fight these conditions, feeling ourselves to be under their "dark" influence.

The fact is, however, these events do not exist as negative events except for our perception of them. The only power they have is the power we give them.

What is the proof? Someone else observing the same event may not see it as negative at all. If we separate the facts from what we perceive as a thing's power, we are on the way to freeing ourselves from all things that bother us. Your wish to understand your pain by shining the light of Truth on it will show you where to break the thought connection through which you give your life energy to events that would otherwise have no power over you.

If you truly wish to be free, you can even shine that light back into what feels like your own hard or cold past, and the warm light of Truth will melt all those long past difficulties dwelling there until eventually nothing about your life will have the power to bother you again.

Artificial Brain Ten Years Away

By Jonathan Fildes /Technology reporter, BBC News

A detailed, functional artificial human brain can be built within the next 10 years, a leading scientist has claimed.

Henry Markram, director of the Blue Brain Project, has already simulated elements of a rat brain.

He told the TED Global conference in Oxford that a synthetic human brain would be of particular use finding treatments for mental illnesses.

Around two billion people are thought to suffer some kind of brain impairment, he said.

"It is not impossible to build a human brain and we can do it in 10 years," he said.
"And if we do succeed, we will send a hologram to TED to talk."

Secret Methods to Build Brain Power

By Steve G. Jones, M.Ed., Clinical Hypnotherapist
Creator of Brain Power Control

What is self improvement? Well, the dictionary defines self improvement as "improvement of one's mind, character, etc. through one's own efforts. Seems pretty simple and straight forward.

So logically, the next question one would ask themselves is what should the efforts consist of? In other words, what techniques, principles & resources work most effectively?

Well, that is a question that Clinical Hypnotherapist, Steve G. Jones has been asking himself for many years.

Since the 1980's, Steve has been changing the lives of people all over the world for the better using the power of hypnosis.

One thing that he has always kept in mind in his search is that there is no "one magical formula" that can completely improve every single aspect of your life. Enhancing your level of self improvement is a process that consists of many different techniques and formulas. After all, one's self consists of many things and because we are all different, some of us need more improvement in certain places than others.

10 Ways to Change Your Life in 59 Seconds

By Heidi Blake / Source: The Telegraph

You can change your life in 59 seconds by dropping your pet frog into conversation or keeping a picture of a baby in your wallet, according to a new science-based book by popular psychologist Richard Wiseman.

The ex-magician, who has a PhD in the psychology of deception, argues that tiny alterations to our day-to-day lives can make a huge difference to our overall happiness.

His new self-help book, 59 Seconds: Think a Little. Change a Lot, distils evidence from empirical studies in a variety of scientific journals into small nuggets of apparently life-changing advice.

The book includes chapters on work, relationships, attraction, decision-making and stress, and has been endorsed by Channel 4 illusionist Derren Brown as "a triumph of scientifically-proven advice over misleading myths of self-help".

5 Mind Tricks to Beat the Recession

By Dr. Robert Anthony
Creator of Rapid Manifestation Guided Audio

I've never seen anything like it.

Over the past few months I have been swamped with emails from business owners panicking over the economy and wondering how they're going to cope with it.

If you’ve been following the national and global economic news you know that it is not a very encouraging picture. We’ve heard about collapses, bailouts and the possibility of more to come.

The stock market recently experienced the largest single point drop in history. No one knows for sure whether the situation will quickly improve or get worse before it gets better…..

But make no mistake…….

The road to financial success and prosperity in your life and in your business starts in your own mind. Many business people I talk to blame the their current economic situation on the government, the housing market, the stock market, the war in Iraq, high taxes, and countless other factors.

While all of these issues do have an impact on the collective prosperity of the world, they are all inconsequential compared to the most important factor of all…

Mind-Controlled Wheelchair Unveiled

Japan's Toyota Motor said on Monday it had invented a way to allow a person to steer an electric wheelchair through simple thought, using a helmet-like device that measures their brain waves.

The cutting-edge Brain Machine Interface (BMI) technology uses electrodes attached to the scalp to measure localised brain activity when a user concentrates on certain physical movements.

The signals are displayed on a panel in almost real time and translated into instructions to steer the motorised wheelchair, the researchers said.

"Such systems allow elderly and handicapped people to interact with the world through signals from their brains without having to give voice commands," Toyota said in a statement.

10 More Bizarre Mental Disorders

Source: The List Universe

Finally we have our second installment of bizarre brain-related disorders. In our first list we covered such illnesses as Stockholm Syndrome, and Stendhal Syndrome. This time we are looking at some slightly more physical disorders - many of which are the result of physical damage to the brain or parts of the body.

If you have suffered from any of these illnesses, or know of people who have, it would be great to hear about your experiences. Most of these are very rare, but a number of them are surprisingly common.

Phantom Limb Disorder

A person suffering from this disorder experiences the sensation that a missing limb (or even organ, such as the appendix) is still present on the body. 50 - 80% of people who have had an amputation experience this disorder. The sufferer will very often feel pain and discomfort in the phantom limb. Some sufferers can feel their phantom limbs gesticulating while they talk, and others believe that the limb is acting independently of their will. This disorder is often treated with Virtual Reality therapy.

Body Integrity Identity Disorder

Also known as Amputee Identity Disorder, this illness causes a person to wish to have a healthy part of their body amputated. In some cases, the sufferer has gone so far as to amputate their own limbs. Some sufferers also have sexual fetishes involving amputees. Some surgeons have actually amputated a limb for a person suffering this disorder, but it is a highly controversial move and most doctors use similar treatments to those used for phantom limb disorders.
