The Easiest Path to Happiness

By Andreas Ohrt / Excerpt from
Everything Is Infinite: Do Nothing. Get Everything.

Think of it this way: there are thousands (maybe millions) of things you would desperately miss if they were gone, and that would bring you happiness if they returned. And you already have them.

What if suddenly you couldn't breathe? If after a few minutes of dying you again started breathing it would be the happiest moment of your life. Yet you are breathing right now, and you barely notice it. Your body is processing a billion interactions inside of you so that you can casually disagree with me. If any of those functions stopped you would pray that they return and promise never to take them for granted again.

Happiness Is Free

I don't really care that much whether people listen to me. I used to think, once upon a time as a young lad, that I'd make a name for myself, do something grand and impressive, change the world and all that stuff. I don't care about that anymore.

Now, I'd rather not be famous. The more I've learned, the more I've come to lean toward the conclusion that the best thing in the world is for the world to leave you alone.

There is ultimately nothing to accomplish in life. You don't need to be rich or well-liked or of prestigious social standing. You don't need much of anything to be happy. You just need to focus on being happy, because you can only do one thing at a time in life.

The Secret to Happiness: Stop Caring

Our lives are inundated with practicality and productivity. We think that if there’s no purpose to something, there’s no point in doing it. In reality the best things in life have no purpose.

We sacrifice our time and our sanity doing what we don’t want to do, so at some future point we will create the freedom to do what we love.

We seek happiness in things. We seek happiness in the acceptance of others, in material possessions, in social status. We even search for happiness in some future-promised afterlife. We sabotage ourselves and our entire lives because we fail to understand a very simple but easily overlooked fact.

20 Things You Need To Let Go To Be Happy

Let Go Let God

Everyone has one common goal in life: to achieve true happiness. The biggest factor holding us back from achieving our dreams is, simply and sadly, our own selves. We put limitations on ourselves everyday, whether intentionally or unintentionally. There are so many ways we can alleviate these restraints.

Remember, life can either be something you embrace or something you hide from. Stop making things complicated and just live your life. It would be so much simpler and more enjoyable if we learned to just release certain limitations.

Let's take a look at the things you need to let go of in order to become a happier person.

The Happy Drugs Inside Your Brain

Source: The Ancient Secret of Kings

We might not have a money tree, but we can have a happiness tree.

Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Endorphins are the quartet responsible for our happiness. Many events can trigger these neurotransmitters, but rather than being in the passenger seat, there are ways we can intentionally cause them to flow.

Being in a positive state has significant impact on our motivation, productivity, and wellbeing. No sane person would be opposed to having higher levels in those areas.

Here are some simple ways to hack into our positive neurochemicals:

The Practical Benefits of Outrageous Optimism

If you ask me, everything is pretty frickin' great these days.

Your life and my life are both going to continue to increase in awesomeness over time.

We are likely to have exceptional fortune and health throughout our days, we'll help to change some lives for the better, our kids are going to turn out loving and great, and we will die with a broad smile across our rugged and weather-worn faces somewhere around the age of a hundred and twenty two.

Oh sure, there will be the odd problem and catastrophe along the way, but they will just serve as recharging jolts to keep us from getting complacent. More problems to solve, more learning to do, and deeper happiness to attain.

On top of that, the human race is bound for an ever-better fate, ironing out most of its current problems and most of the problems that follow in the future, ending up at a tantalizing Star Trek Utopia.

Those are pretty controversial statements to make these days, yet strangely enough the general theme tends to become true, for the few people who are crazy enough to believe it.

Here's How Money Can Buy Happiness

MindTrip Magazine
Money really can buy happiness — if you buy things that "match" your personality, a new study from the United Kingdom suggests.

Researchers analyzed more than 76,000 purchases that 625 people made over a six-month period, and grouped the purchases into categories based on how they might be tied to a personality trait.

How to Easily Become a Miserable Loser

Misery is everywhere. Everywhere you look. That’s a fact. I see lots of it around here in Eastern Europe where I’m living now. Eastern Europe is a dreary, unhappy, miserable place.

I also saw it in New York when I was there last year. Lots of unhappy people. New York is an unhappy place, especially in the winter. The subway cars get overcrowded. Everyone is grumpy. Then the snow falls and there are all kinds of delays. Millions of grumpy people can’t make it to work on time. Then the snow melts and you have this ugly black slush everywhere. Nasty. There’s no other word to describe it. It’s really nasty.

But most of all, I see this misery right here on the Internet. Like right on my own blog. I write a random post, hit publish and moments later an angry swarm of criticism from people I don’t even know fills up the comments area.

The Secret to Achieving Your Dreams No One Tells You About

The Happiness Track
By Emma M. Seppälä Ph.D,
Author of
The Happiness Track

A Stanford student announced that she had to drop out of the Happiness class. “When I asked her why, instructor Carole Pertofsky shared with me, she said that it went against everything she had been taught: ‘My parents told me that my job in life was to be very, very successful. As I got older, I asked my parents what I needed to do to be very successful, and they said to work very, very hard. As time went by, I asked them, how do I know when I’m working hard enough, and they said, “When you’re suffering.” While this answer may seem shocking and wrong, many of us have bought into the idea that, in order to be successful, you have to sacrifice your happiness.

After working in many high-achieving environments like Yale, Stanford, Silicon Valley, New York City, I noticed too many people were pursuing “success” at a cost to themselves. They were postponing their happiness now in pursuit of success with the idea that, when they attain success, they will be happy. Yet they were burning themselves out (and others) in the process. I, too, joined the rat race because it seemed like what everyone was doing. It seemed like the right thing to do. But it wasn’t.
When I looked at the research, I saw that—overwhelmingly— happiness is actually the secret to success.
Success looks different for each person - for one, success is being able to attain a professional goal, for another it's a personal goal - like being a terrific parent. Either way, if you prioritize your happiness, you will actually be more productive, more creative, more resilient, more energized, more charismatic and influential. You will have more willpower and be more focused, with less effort.

That’s why I wrote my book The Happiness Track.

Is Semen an Antidepressant?

By Jennifer Abbasi / Source: Popular Science

Back in 2002, psychologists at the State University of New York at Albany published a study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior looking at the potential role of semen in alleviating depression in women.

The researchers presented evidence supporting an earlier hypothesis that the hormones in semen have a mood-boosting effect on women. For any woman who has had sex -- and enjoyed it -- this may not come as a huge surprise.

Cut to this past February. Lazar Greenfield, the incoming president of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), wrote a short Valentine's Day-themed editorial about mating in Surgery News. In it, he discussed the sex lives of fruit flies, rotifers and humans. He cited the SUNY Albany study before concluding: "So there's a deeper bond between men and women than St. Valentine would have suspected, and now we know there's a better gift for that day than chocolates." That gift, of course, being semen.

A Simple Mind Trick to Switch Off Depression

By A. B. Curtiss
Author of Brainswitch Out of Depression

Taking drugs for depression often turns out to be a medical and emotional yo-yo. If one drug doesn’t work, says the American Psychiatric Association, try another. If you don’t get relief from changing one drug for another, use a combination. For a third of the population though, according to recent research, no drug works. It is heart-breaking to read how many sufferers, especially teen-agers, commit suicide even while on their meds.

There’s some light at the end of the tunnel. Physical exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy are now shown to be as effective as anti-depressants. The best cognitive behavioral technique I have found for depression is Brainswitching, which was developed from neuroscience research and brain mapping.

Brainswitching uses simple mind exercises to switch the neuronal activity from the emotional part of the brain (the subcortex) to the thinking part of the brain (the neocortex) which does not have the capacity for depression.

The Secret of Happiness in 8 Words

By Stuart Goldsmith, Excerpt from Seven Secrets of the Millionaires

You might like to know that the secret of happiness can be explained in just eight words and is, in fact, quite mundane.

It does not involve meditation, drugs or self-flagellation. Each of the eight words is worth one million dollars, but here they are, free:

Tomorrow - Today - Live - For - Better - Working - A - While

Inner Circle Mentoring
What? You can't make sense of that? I gave you the words for free, but the correct order is going to cost you plenty...

Pause, while the anagram-freaks try to work it out themselves...

Got it? No? Okay, you'll have to read on...

How to Stop Thinking

Learning to stop thinking so much is probably the greatest single step we can take to increase inner peace and happiness in our lives.

Worrying about the future, regretting the past, obsessing over what could or should have been, criticizing ourselves and others, blaming the world for our woes – these are some of the habitual thinking patterns we can become unconsciously lost in for hours, days or even years.

I say unconscious because much of our thinking happens on autopilot as a deeply ingrained habit. Thinking is going on with little or no awareness that it is happening.

Rather than being a wonderful tool to be picked up and used when needed, the mind is more like an out of control Frankenstein monster with a life of its own.

So, how to stop thinking so much? How to free ourselves from the torment of addictive thinking?

How the Whole World Conspires to Shower You With Blessings

By Rob Brezsny
Excerpt from the book Pronoia
Source: FreeWillAstrology.com

Thousands of things go right for you every day, beginning the moment you wake up. Through some magic you don't fully understand, you're still breathing and your heart is beating, even though you've been unconscious for many hours. The air is a mix of gases that's just right for your body's needs, as it was before you fell asleep.

You can see! Light of many colors floods into your eyes, registered by nerves that took God or evolution or some process millions of years to perfect. The interesting gift of these vivid hues comes to you courtesy of an unimaginably immense globe of fire, the sun, which continually detonates nuclear reactions in order to convert its body into light and heat and energy for your personal use.

Did you know that the sun is located at the precise distance from you to be of perfect service? If it were any closer, you'd fry, and if it were any further away, you'd freeze. Here's another one of the sun's benedictions: It appears to rise over the eastern horizon right on schedule every day, as it has since long before you were born.

Do you remember when you were born, by the way? It was a difficult miracle that involved many people who worked hard on your behalf. No less miraculous is the fact that you have continued to grow since then, with millions of new cells being born inside you to replace the old ones that die. All of this happens whether or not you ever think about it.

On this day, like almost every other, you have awoken inside a temperature-controlled shelter. You have a home! Your bed and pillow are soft and you're covered by comfortable blankets. The electricity is turned on, as usual. Somehow, in ways you're barely aware of, a massive power plant at an unknown distance from your home is transforming fuel into currents of electricity that reach you through mostly hidden conduits in the exact amounts you need, and all you have to do to control the flow is flick small switches with your fingers.

You can walk! Your legs work wonderfully well. Your heart circulates your blood all the way down to replenish the energy of the muscles in your feet and calves and thighs, and when the blood is depleted it finds its way back to your heart to be refreshed. This blessing recurs over and over again without stopping every hour of your life.
