How to Treat Social Anxiety

Knowing how to treat social anxiety can mean the difference between a life of complete social freedom and a crippling existence where you hide from day to day interactions.

I know this firsthand because I used to belong to the later of the two.
I probably don't have to tell you dealing with social anxiety is like having a wall in between you and the rest of the world.

Despite your best efforts, the overwhelming fear, panic and self-consciousness envelopes your every action.

Personally, the paranoia I felt when in social situations was unbearable. I would also constantly squirm and feel restless, not knowing where to put my hands, my body, how to stand or sit – you name it.

12 Anxiety and Depression Books That Will Actually Help

Recently, I found myself back in my doctor’s office, talking about all the finer points of my anxiety. Again. Was I experiencing déjà vu? I’d certainly been there before. I’d been doing well, managing the feeling over the past few months, but then things got worse again, and there I was, with a mandate to focus on myself again to get better. What could I do, though? I’ve never been one who finds mindfulness practices too great a help — scratch that, I hate that stuff — so, instead, I turned to books to help my anxiety and depression.

When I started reading to help with my anxiety, I searched the Internet for book lists intended to help sufferers of anxiety and depression, but each list had the same repetitive framework: self-help books, novels about severely mentally ill people, etc. That’s about as much of an escape as Steve McQueen getting stuck in the barbed wire at the last hurdle. So instead, I made my own list.

Over 28 days I read these 12 books, and revived a part of myself with each of them. I’m sharing these books with you in the order in which I read them. Here, I found my own series of 12 escapes from anxiety and depression. I hope, just maybe, you will, too.

Why We All Have Fear of Failure

By Tellman Knudson, CHT / Creator of
The Wealth Switch Hypnosis Session

Sure, fear of failure affects lots of people. But how about you? Let’s start off by taking a short quiz.

Answer each question below honestly:
  • Do you ever put off doing something because you’re “not sure how it will turn out”?
  • Do you avoid situations where you will have to try something new in front of people?
  • Have you ever put off doing something you know will improve your life, even though you have “no good reason” not to do it?
If you answered “yes” to one or more of the above questions, you’re not alone. Most people are in this self-defeating boat with you. But there is a way to get out.

Fear Is Afraid You Will Learn This Secret

By Guy Finley, Creator of Stop Being Afraid Once and For All

Fear has a secret weakness.

Discover that weakness and you'll know how to drop fear... instantaneously.

Not after some long, drawn-out battle to overcome it. But as the immediate and shocking result of a new and powerful understanding put into action.

No tricks of imagination, no voo-doo, no affirmations.
Just sharp, clear, decisive action.

It doesn't matter what fear you're facing. Whether it's the fear of growing old, the fear of losing a close relationship, the fear of changing careers, the fear of introducing yourself to someone new, or the all-consuming fear of public speaking.

As it turns out, Guy Finley, the world-renowned bestselling author and self-realization teacher, has
spent a lifetime understanding fear. In fact, he has an entire book devoted to the subject, and he dedicates much of his work at his non-profit Life of Learning Foundation toward helping people overcome their fear. And now, to extend his efforts even further, Guy recently created a phenomenal 1-hour program entitled Stop Being Afraid Once and For All.

This one program holds within it the key to overcoming fear, including the unthinkable new action that gives you total authority over fear. It's easy to understand and it's easy to follow. Best of all, we've just made special arrangements with Guy and his Foundation. For a short time it's available to you as an MP3 download for just $4.49, on CD for $5.49, or on DVD for a mere $6.97.

If you'd like to find out how you can master your fear, and finally step into all those alluring aspects of
life that fear has roped off, click the link below to read a testimonial letter from my friend Tim Weichman. He shares how these ideas turned a terrifying public-speaking nightmare into one of the most life-altering experiences of his life, and he explains how you can use this program to harness the exact same understanding for yourself.

How to Be Less Stupid

By James Altucher

I'm really stupid. I can tell you in advance. I think at heart, if I work at it, I can be smart. But at the moment I'm largely an idiot. I feel I have the right knowledge but I let a lot of stuff get in the way. You know: "stuff". Worries, guilt, paranoia, grudges, resentment. Like, for instance: I resent the people who resent me. I think they resent me for no reason. So now I resent them. What a circle-jerk!

I used to think when I added stuff to my brain I'd get smarter. But this is not true. For instance, if I look up when Charlemagne was born I'd just add a fact to my head which I will forget tomorrow. This won't make me smarter. Subtraction, and not Addition, is what makes the window to the brain more clear, wipes away the smudges, opens the drapes.

One example: the day I lost the deal to do Tupac's website, I had a chess lesson afterwards. I couldn't play at all. It was like I didn't even know the rules. My instructor said, "what's wrong with you today?" But I was ashamed. And angry at myself. So my intelligence went way down. Like 80% down.

So here's my great list.

The 60 Second Fix For Panic Attacks

Did you know that only 2 out of 10 people report that they have issues with anxiety or panic attacks…

YET:

Studies have shown that “anxiety” is a condition that affects nearly everyone…

And even panic attacks are far more common than you may believe.

First, let me be clear:

The anxiety I’m referring to doesn’t have to be a full-blown “disorder”...

It can be social anxiety… feeling uneasy about going out in public, and preferring instead to just hang out and watch television.

Social anxiety triggers weight gain, as it signals the brain that you are in “hibernation mode” and forces your body to hang on to its body fat.

All Your Thoughts Are Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

From Shakespeare to The Secret, the idea that our thoughts and perceptions shape our reality is recognized as a powerful truth. As the Bard wrote, "[T]here is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."

While charlatans have long used this belief to promote bogus cancer cures and get-rich-quick schemes, psychologists are now actually beginning to understand how "faking it 'til you make it" — or alternatively, psyching yourself out with negative thinking — works in the social world.

Two fascinating recent studies — one on confidence; the other exploring social fears — reveal how our own positive and negative stances work to alter our relationships and careers.

30 Things to Stop Doing to Yourself

Source: Marc and Angel Hack Life

As Maria Robinson once said, "Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."

Nothing could be closer to the truth. But before you can begin this process of transformation you have to stop doing the things that have been holding you back.

Here are some ideas to get you started:
