Flexing Muscles Instantly Increases Willpower

Here's good news that's just in time to help you avoid the temptation of sugary goodies served up at holiday parties. If you feel your willpower weakening as you pass the desserts piled high, just tighten up your muscles -- flex any of them, including your finger or calf muscles.

Sound crazy? Not according to new research. Scientists have found that firming muscles literally shores up self-control.

Researchers Iris W. Hung of the National University of Singapore and Aparna A. Labroo of the University of Chicago collaborated on a study that put volunteers through a range of self-control dilemmas revolving around accepting immediate pain for long-term gain.

Do Bananas Enjoy Mozart?

By Daniel Krieger / Source: The Japan Times

Although the claim that listening to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's complicated scores can boost your IQ has been debunked, its effect on bananas has yet to be disputed. So in July, the Hyogo Prefecture-based fruit company Toyoka Chuo Seika shipped out its first batch of "Mozart Bananas" to supermarkets in the area.

Arriving as ordinary unripe bananas from the Philippines, "Mozart Bananas" meet an odd fate. "String Quartet 17" and "Piano Concerto 5 in D major," among other works, play continuously for one week in their ripening chamber, which has speakers installed specifically for this purpose.

Strange as this process may sound, these aren't the first bananas in Japan to take in the strains of the great 18th- century Austrian composer. A fruit wholesaler in Miyazaki Prefecture started doing it three years ago. In fact, over the past few decades, a wide variety of foods and beverages have been exposed to classical vibrations — soy sauce in Kyoto, udon noodles in Tokyo, miso in Yamagata Prefecture, maitake mushrooms in Ishikawa Prefecture and "Beethoven Bread" in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, to name a few.

It's enough to make the skeptic wonder: Are such producers really serious about the benefits of classical music?

Time Travel in the Brain

By Daniel Gilbert & Randy Buckner
Source: Time Magazine

What are you doing when you aren't doing anything at all? If you said "nothing," then you have just passed a test in logic and flunked a test in neuroscience.

When people perform mental tasks--adding numbers, comparing shapes, identifying faces--different areas of their brains become active, and brain scans show these active areas as brightly colored squares on an otherwise dull gray background. But researchers have recently discovered that when these areas of our brains light up, other areas go dark.

This dark network (which comprises regions in the frontal, parietal and medial temporal lobes) is off when we seem to be on, and on when we seem to be off. If you climbed into an MRI machine and lay there quietly, waiting for instructions from a technician, the dark network would be as active as a beehive. But the moment your instructions arrived and your task began, the bees would freeze and the network would fall silent. When we appear to be doing nothing, we are clearly doing something. But what?

The answer, it seems, is time travel.

The 5 Rules of Mind-Body Healing

By Laura Silva / Source: Silva Mind Body Healing

The breakthrough you’re about to discover on this page has been used by over 6 million people in 111 countries. It has helped many of them reduce symptoms and aid in healing, from minor ailments to serious illnesses. It’s a process of relaxation and imagery therapy called The Silva Method.

The Silva Method is based on the idea that the mind-body connection is extremely powerful in healing and with the right mental attitude and with specific practices, you can dramatically speed up healing while working with your doctor.

So has it been proven by science? Yes!

Dr. William Braud was one of the pioneers of studying the mind’s effect on healing. After hundreds of experiments performed at the San Antonio Mind Science Research Center, Dr. Braud outlined five major mental techniques that he believed have important effects on the self-healing processes.

Can Science Explain the Soul?

By Stuart Hameroff, Deepak Chopra / Source: SF Gate

The soul has never lacked for believers, including around 90% of the American public, according to pollsters. But science has remained aloof, basically for two reasons. First, the soul has been assumed to be a matter of personal belief, not objective knowledge. Second, science deals in visible, concrete things using objective data.

But since the era of quantum physics began over a century ago, invisible things and fleeting events have entered science, so subtle that the realm from which they emerge is almost a matter of faith.

Now some scientists are willing to venture into the once forbidden territory of the soul, attempting to extract a theory that will allow for its existence.

Redefined by the new field of quantum biology, the soul could be the link that connects individuals to the universe, a dynamic connection that could explain how consciousness came about, and why the cosmos itself seems to mirror our own intelligence and creativity. Below are components of an argument for a secular soul based on quantum physics and biology.

'Psychic' Panda No Match for Paul the Octopus

Who couldn't have seen this coming?

The world of predictions is such a fickle place. If you thought that 2010 was going to be remembered for Paul the Octopus's psychic World Cup predictions then you were wrong. For we have a new player on the scene and he ain't gonna be turned into paella anytime soon.

China is currently enthralled by the exploits of a panda who goes by the name of Bo Si. He plumped for a Chinese athlete to be the first gold medal winner of the Asian Games, which are taking place in Guangzhou in Bo Si's home nation. Lo and behold, the sportsman Yuan Xiaochao promptly won for the martial art of wushu.

2012: Our Enlightened New World

By Jafree Ozwald / The Manifesting Super Gold Pack

You may have already sensed that a New World is coming into each of our personal lives. If you stop and truly pay attention, you can feel it. As everything continues moving faster and faster we cannot help but wake up and realize our divine infinite potentiality.

We are each being pulled, cajoled, and summoned to spiritually awaken by the people and global events around us. Our planets economic, political and environmental shifts are our "wake up calls", forcing us to individually turn inwards, and create a more sensitive, loving, and conscious approach to life. This deeper sensitivity has in turn awakened a new kind of human being inside all of us. A being who is attuned to their natural divine state within, guided by their intuition, and enlightened by their own individual consciousness.

As the world continues to wake us up, the number of enlightened beings will naturally multiply and collectively in time create a New World. This global enlightenment will create a foundation of peace for this planet for the first time in many millennia. Our planet is about to give birth to billions of heart centered open minded people, and nobody is going to miss this massive enlightening ride!!

Luck, Coincidence, or Synchronicity?

By Jim Francis

Many see coincidences as embedded in a higher, transcendental force, a cosmic "glue," as it were, which binds random events together in a meaningful and coherent pattern. The question has always been: could such a harmonizing principle actually exist?

Or are skeptics right in regarding this as a product of wishful thinking, a consoling myth spawned by the intellectual discomfort and capriciousness of chance?

Mathematician Warren Weaver, in his book, Lady Luck: The Theory of Probability, recounts a fascinating tale of coincidence that stretches our traditional notions of chance to their breaking point.

Electric Shock Treatment Cures Memory Loss

By Andrew Hough
 / Source: The Telegraph

Giving a person an electric shock can help improve their memory, scientists have discovered.

Researchers found that a tiny surge of power to parts of the brain can improve recall memory by 11 per cent.

The treatment stimulates certain neurons in the brain so when a person tries to retrieve a name from their brain, they suddenly start working.

If developed it could provide treatment for stroke victims as well as people whose memory fades through other ailments or even old age.

The Absence of Desire is the Beginning of Happiness

By Kacper Potawski

If you look closely, all your desires are actually like mirages.

An illusion you never get to that makes your life into a never-ending, non-fulfilling story that only keeps you wanting more.

When you're walking in the desert, and you see the image of a lake, you thirst. You keep walking after the lake, but the more you walk, the more you thirst, the further the lake gets away from you.

And your thirst is never quenched.

This is the same insane madness that most of us live our lives in constantly... constantly wanting something else to be fulfilled. Constantly thinking about an imaginary future that will bring salvation.

This is "normal life"... as it seems.

After all, it's what your parents taught you to do... It's what everyone else is doing...

But, essentially, it's madness! Because you keep going somewhere...and... You never get there!

Is This Evidence That We Can See The Future?

By Peter Aldhous / Source: New Scientist

Extraordinary claims don't come much more extraordinary than this: events that haven't yet happened can influence our behaviour.

Parapsychologists have made outlandish claims about precognition – knowledge of unpredictable future events – for years. But the fringe phenomenon is about to get a mainstream airing: a paper providing evidence for its existence has been accepted for publication by the leading social psychology journal.

What's more, sceptical psychologists who have pored over a preprint of the paper say they can't find any significant flaws. "My personal view is that this is ridiculous and can't be true," says Joachim Krueger of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, who has blogged about the work on the Psychology Today website. "Going after the methodology and the experimental design is the first line of attack. But frankly, I didn't see anything. Everything seemed to be in good order."

Meditation Improves Health and Longevity

Positive psychological changes that occur during meditation training increase activity of telomerase, an enzyme important for the long-term health of cells in the body.

The effect appears to be attributable to psychological changes that increase a person’s ability to cope with stress and maintain feelings of well-being, according to a new study.

“We have found that meditation promotes positive psychological changes, and that meditators showing the greatest improvement on various psychological measures had the highest levels of telomerase,” says Clifford Saron, associate research scientist at the University of California, Davis.

“The take-home message from this work is not that meditation directly increases telomerase activity and therefore a person’s health and longevity,” Saron says.

The Healing Power of Music

By Jim Francis / Source: Super Mind Evolution System

How does Super Mind Music affect our body and brain?

Music appears to be processed in the right hemisphere of the brain. The way we experience music also affects our nervous system.

There are different neurons that respond according to what kind of music is playing. Music can effect hormones, encourage the production of cortisol, testosterone, and oxytocin. Music can even trigger a release of endorphins.

Beyond the biology and the actual responses of your body, there are definite responses of the mind as well. You're aware of how you feel when you listen to music, but how do you know that it's actually having any sort of effect on you? There is scientific evidence of the way it can affect your mind! It's clearly more than just a suspicion -- it's fact!

The most famous experiment related to this is probably the one that was performed at the University of California at Irvine. College students were assigned to three different groups. The first group listened to Mozart's sonata for Two Pianos in D Major. The second group listened to a relaxation tape. The third group listened to nothing at all.

After listening, they took a Stanford-Beinet reasoning test. The results were clear -- those who had listened to Mozart had improved scores!

How to Have Joy and Peace Now

By Dr. Alex Loyd / Creator of The Healing Codes

I want joy and peace now. How about you? And I believe you can have them.

My question is what is keeping you from joy and peace now in your life? The first thing to look at is what is blocking them. I have seen that there are two things blocking joy and peace in almost every situation. They are a focusing too much on the past or focusing too much on the future in a negative way.

Studies have come out in the last number of years that talk about how traditional counseling and therapy often make people worse instead of better. Let me be very careful here to explain that this is the kind of therapy where you’re basically just going back to your problems and rehashing them over and over and over. Research is indicating that a lot of times that makes the problem worse. I don’t have any trouble at all believing that.

Bees' Tiny Brains Beat Computer

The Guardian

Bees can solve complex mathematical problems which keep computers busy for days, research has shown.

The insects learn to fly the shortest route between flowers discovered in random order, effectively solving the "travelling salesman problem" , said scientists at Royal Holloway, University of London.

The conundrum involves finding the shortest route that allows a travelling salesman to call at all the locations he has to visit. Computers solve the problem by comparing the length of all possible routes and choosing the one that is shortest.

Bees manage to reach the same solution using a brain the size of a grass seed.

The Boy Who Lived Before

Ever since he could talk, Cameron has been telling stories of his life on Barra, a remote island in the Outer Hebrides, some 220 miles from his current home in Glasgow.

He describes in detail his childhood on the island: the white house he lived in, the black-and-white dog he walked on the beach. He talks about his mother, seven siblings and his father, Shane Robertson, who died when he was run over by a car.

Nothing strange about all that. Except the fact that Cameron is only five years old now; his memories seem to be of a former life.

Are Ghosts Calling Your Cellphone?

By Jane Hamilton / The Sun UK

Ghosts are trying to make contact with living friends using mobile phones, a paranormal expert claims.

The number of mystery calls to mobiles attributed to spooks has rocketed by 43 per cent in the last four years, a study found.

Spectre investigator Phil Hayes from Paranormal Research UK believes a third of all hauntings are now through mobile phones.

The calls often feature heavy static and the voice sounds faint and distant, he revealed. Nine in ten show as "withheld number" or "000000000000" on caller ID.
