How to Change Minds: 20 Persuasion Tricks

Perfection is hard to achieve in any walk of life and persuasion is no different. It relies on many things going just right at the crucial moment; the perfect synchronisation of source, message and audience. But even if perfection is unlikely, we all need to know what to aim for.

To bring you the current series on the psychology of persuasion I've been reading lots of research, much more than is covered in recent posts. As I read, I noticed the same themes cropping up over and over again.

Here are the most important points for crafting the perfect persuasive message, all of which have scientific evidence to back them up.

You Create and Control Everything In Your Life

By Enoch Tan / Source: Mind Power Secrets Package

Lack of control is an illusion. If you are the creator, all things are under your control. Some people say that control is an illusion but the opposite is the real truth.

How can you not be in control when all things are under your control? Realize the aspect of yourself that is divine, your Godhood. God is in control of all things, and God is the Self of all, which is your Higher Self. You are the Higher Self. You create all of your reality. There is no aspect of your reality which you do not create. Therefore you control all.

You are not a victim. All power is within and is absolutely under your control. To say that things happen through another cause other than yourself is to say that you are a victim.

Nothing happens outside of you. Everything is happening within you. You are Consciousness, and Consciousness encompasses All That Is. Whenever you feel not being in control, you are experiencing an illusion. You created the illusion of not being in control, of not being God. You are the director of the script and can control at will.

The Six Million Dollar Bionic Brain

By Judith Horstman / Source: Fox News

The six-million dollar man was pure fantasy in the 70s -- but largely realistic technology today. And the future of this tech is even wilder: Implantable brain electrodes may be just around the corner.

Futurists and science-fiction writers have long speculated about merging human and machine, especially human brains and computers. These dreams are slowly becoming reality: The deaf are hearing with bionic "ears," the blind see with the aid of electrodes, an amputee is moving a prosthetic arm by thought, a man paralyzed with locked-in syndrome is "speaking" through a brain electrode connected to a computerized synthesizer.

One such bionic advance -- thought-driven neural implants -- could change the lives of millions of people, including the many thousands conscious but now entombed within their own bodies in what's called locked-in syndrome, and the thousands of wounded warriors returning from battle with missing limbs and devastating brain injuries.

And it could open tremendous opportunities for people in the future who would like to take their minds where no man's body has gone before -- into deepest space or the deepest of ocean depths, for example, through the "senses" of a thought-driven robot.

Artificial Telepathy - The Perfect Torture

Source: MindTech Sweden

The experience of “Artificial Telepathy” is really not that extraordinary. It’s as simple as receiving a cell-phone call in one’s head.

Indeed, most of the technology involved is exactly identical to that of cell-phone technology. Satellites link the sender and the receiver. A computer “multiplexer” routes the voice signal of the sender through microwave towers to a very specifically defined location or cell. The “receiver” is located and tracked with pinpoint accuracy, to within a few feet of actual location.

But the receiver is not a cell phone. It’s a human brain.

Out of nowhere, a voice suddenly blooms in the mind of the target. The human skull has no “firewall” and therefore cannot shut the voice out. The receiver can hear the sender’s verbal thoughts. The sender, in turn, can hear all of the target’s thoughts, exactly as if the target’s verbal thoughts had been spoken or broadcast. For this reason, the experience could be called “hearing voices” but is more properly described as “artificial telepathy”.

Orgasms Unlock Altered Consciousness

By Kayt Sukel / Source: New Scientist

With a click and a whirr, I am pulled into the scanner. My head is strapped down and I have been draped with a blanket so that I may touch my nether regions - my clitoris in particular - with a certain degree of modesty. I am here neither for a medical procedure nor an adult movie. Rather, I am about to stimulate myself to orgasm while an fMRI scanner tracks the blood flow in my brain.

My actions are helping Barry Komisaruk at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, and colleagues to tease apart the mechanisms underlying sexual arousal. In doing so, not only have they discovered that there is more than one route to orgasm, but they may also have revealed a novel type of consciousness - an understanding of which could lead to new treatments for pain.

Despite orgasm being a near-universal human phenomenon, we still don't know all that much about it. "The amount of speculation versus actual data on both the function and value of orgasm is remarkable," says Julia Heiman, director of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction in Bloomington, Indiana.

By Greg Frost, Creator of Universal Life Secrets

Today I will be sharing with you some tactics on how you can leverage off your subconscious mind to get things done better.

The key to making your subconscious mind work for you is in your attitude. Having a positive self-esteem and confidence in yourself can go a long way towards achieving the goals that you have set out for your mind.

Whilst many people believe that confidence and esteem comes with your personality, which is determined at birth, it is not true. It is never too late to start cultivating and improving your inner image and resources, primarily that of your subconscious mind.

How to Manipulate Your Body to Wake the Hell Up

By Matthew Rogers / Source: LifeHacker

Say it's Friday, you've had a long week, and you keep nodding off at your desk. Coffee's just not getting the job done on its own, and you really don't feel like dumping vials of miniature energy drinks into your system just to get through a few hours of work. The good news is that you don't need to: Here are a few simple tricks to wake yourself up naturally, quickly, and without spending more money.

For the coffee addicts: When you feel like your coffee isn't giving you the jolt you need, try reducing the amount of milk and sugar that you put in it. When every sip is more bitter than what you're used to, you might just feel more awake in drinking it.

Grab a few minutes of direct sunlight, outside: It doesn't matter if you've got a corner office that gets sun all day, light passing through windows just isn't the same as the real deal. Step outside and let your skin grab some untouched sunlight, soak up some Vitamin D, breathe some fresh air and let your ears feel the openness of an unmuffled, non-office world.

Wake Up and Transform Your Life

By Steve Pavlina
What does it mean to wake up and become more conscious?

Let me share some perspectives that should make it easier to understand the process of waking up.

The Cellular Perspective

From the cellular perspective, you can see yourself as an individual person interacting with other individuals. You’re like a single cell in the larger body of humanity, which is comprised of billions of other people-cells.

For example, I could say that I’m a guy (a cell) who’s dedicated to helping people (other cells) live more consciously. I may communicate with many people during my lifetime, but each person is a unique individual, so the impact is different for everyone. We may all be part of some larger body of humanity, but our interactions mainly occur at the individual cellular level.

This is similar to one of the cells in your body noticing the other cells around it and deciding to do what it can to be of service to those cells. It may help a lot of cells, but it still regards itself as an individual cell helping other individual cells. And it won’t help all cells equally, nor could it do so even if it tried.

We Are All Inattentive Superheroes

By Bradley Voytek
One of the more interesting parts about being a neuroscientist is when I'm suddenly struck by how absolutely weird our brains are.

And I'm not even talking about the super trippy stuff like free-will; even the mundane things are really mind-boggling.

For example: what does it mean to experience the world around us? We "see" things because photons that manage to pass through the inside-out design of our retinal cells cause a molecular change in the photoreceptors such that 11-cis-retinal isomerizes... etc.

(Tons of way overly detailed biology cut from here...)

When we "hear" things, the sound pressure waveform hits the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and ultimately causes the basilar membrane in your cochlea to vibrate. The basilar membrane is stiffer at one end (the basal end) and less stiff at the other end (the apical end). This fact was observed by Georg von Békésy (and earned him the 1961 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine).

How to Buy Happiness

Money can buy happiness, but only if you spend it on someone else, researchers reported on Thursday.

Spending as little as $5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School found.

Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others -- even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.

"We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn," said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia.

How to See the Future with Meditation

By Owen Waters / Author of The Shift

One of the great advantages of regular meditation is that it enhances your sense of intuition. The more you practice meditation, the more you gain insight into every aspect of your life. Insights can relate to present or past events, leading to a greater understanding of your life's path, or they can relate to future events.

Insights into future events can be challenging in four ways:

1. The future is not fixed. Until you experience it, the future remains as an array of possibilities with a "most likely" scenario based on what holds the greatest energy.

2. Viewing the future can change the outcome. Even a 100% accurate view of the most likely scenario will trigger questions about whether you want that scenario to manifest, and that change can influence the outcome. This can give the illusion of inaccuracy in the original prediction.

How to Tell If Someone Is Lying

By Stuart Wolpert / Source: UCLA Newsroom

When someone is acting suspiciously at an airport, subway station or other public space, how can law enforcement officers determine whether he's up to no good?

The ability to effectively detect deception is crucial to public safety, particularly in the wake of renewed threats against the U.S. following the killing of Osama bin Laden.

UCLA professor of psychology R. Edward Geiselman has been studying these questions for years and has taught investigative interviewing techniques to detectives and intelligence officers from the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, the Marines, the Los Angeles police and sheriff's departments, and numerous international agencies.

He and three former UCLA undergraduates - Sandra Elmgren, Chris Green and Ida Rystad - analyzed some 60 studies on detecting deception and have conducted original research on the subject. They present their findings and their guidance for how to conduct effective training programs for detecting deception in the current issue of the American Journal of Forensic Psychiatry, which is published this week.

How to Live Forever (results may vary)

By Amara D. Angelica / KurzweilAI.net

I love the premise: take off on a global trek to interview the world’s oldest people, top health and fitness gurus, and smartest life-extension scientists, and ask one question: what’s your secret?

In How To Live Forever, a new film from Variance Films, producer/director Mark Wexler (Seeing Double, Me & My Matchmaker, Air Force One on PBS-National Geographic) does just that.

Ya gotta love Buster, a 101-year-old chain-smoking, beer-drinking marathoner in London, Marge Jetton, a 104-year-old iron-pumping Seventh-day Adventist in Loma Linda, California, and Edna Ruth Parker, 115, the then-oldest person in the world, in Indiana.

Can Psychedelics Make You Happier?

Mike is hunched over a pile of soggy wood chips at the bottom of a glade in Golden Gate Park. It’s a clear winter afternoon and sunlight filters through the eucalyptus trees, landing on grass still damp from a recent storm. Mike sifts through the wood chips, slowly and deliberately examining the soil beneath. Two paper bags fill a pocket of his Patagonia fleece jacket.

Mike is a 28-year-old engineer at a prominent software company in San Francisco. He is soft-spoken and self-possessed; on weekends he drives his Subaru Forester to his time-share in Tahoe to ski. He donates to public radio, and he has made himself into an aficionado of the city’s Indian restaurants. He is, or seems, like a well-adjusted member of society.

But what he is doing — sifting through wood chips in a damp, obscure corner of the 1,000-acre park that bisects the western portion of San Francisco — is a felony.

Thinking Positive Doesn't Work for Asians

Focusing on positive emotions does not help Asians cope with stress and depression, according to a survey of college students.
For European-Americans, however, the more stress and depression they felt, the fewer positive emotions they reported. The findings suggest  psychotherapies emphasizing positive emotions, which can relieve stress and depression in white populations, may not work for Asians, who make up 60 percent of the world population.

The study, published in the journal Emotion, could have implications for helping the Japanese recover from natural disasters and subsequent nuclear crisis in March, and for Chinese coping with post-traumatic stress following the 2008 Sichuan province earthquake.

Change Your Life While You Sleep

Source: Sleep Programming

The average human brain requires 7-10 hours of nightly slumber.

Over your lifetime, that adds up to between 22 and 31 YEARS of your life spent snoozing, unconscious to the world.

But the latest research has revealed that much of this time may be *entirely wasted*.

In fact -- scientists have discovered that during sleep, a "unique" window of learning opens that allows your brain to absorb and assimilate new information like a sponge.

The 48 Laws of Power

By Robert Greene and Joost Elffers
The 48 Laws of Power is a 1998 book by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers. The book shares thematic elements with Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince and has been compared to Sun-Tzu's classic treatise The Art of War.

Law 1: Never Outshine the Master
Always make those above you feel comfortably superior.  In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite – inspire fear and insecurity.  Make your masters appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power.

Law 2: Never put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn how to use Enemies
Be wary of friends-they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy.  They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove.  In fact, you have more to fear from friends than from enemies.  If you have no enemies, find a way to make them.

Law 3: Conceal your Intentions
Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions.  If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense.  Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelope them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late.

Is Semen an Antidepressant?

By Jennifer Abbasi / Source: Popular Science

Back in 2002, psychologists at the State University of New York at Albany published a study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior looking at the potential role of semen in alleviating depression in women.

The researchers presented evidence supporting an earlier hypothesis that the hormones in semen have a mood-boosting effect on women. For any woman who has had sex -- and enjoyed it -- this may not come as a huge surprise.

Cut to this past February. Lazar Greenfield, the incoming president of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), wrote a short Valentine's Day-themed editorial about mating in Surgery News. In it, he discussed the sex lives of fruit flies, rotifers and humans. He cited the SUNY Albany study before concluding: "So there's a deeper bond between men and women than St. Valentine would have suspected, and now we know there's a better gift for that day than chocolates." That gift, of course, being semen.

Did Psychic Spies Help Find Osama bin Laden?

By Gary S. Bekkum

Multiple sources claim to have been approached by US government officials concerning a 21st Century post-9/11 paranormal program, allegedly housed within the secretive National Security Agency (NSA).
An independent source affiliated with the Washington Post confirmed some of the information previously provided to STARstream Research (SSR) and STARpod.org.

According to various accounts, shortly after al Qaida launched attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, US and UK based intelligence agencies approached persons known for their 'extraordinary human performance' capabilities. Among the self-proclaimed 'psychics' contacted by intelligence sources were Uri Geller, who had previously worked with the US CIA, and Chris Robinson, who had provided warnings of terror events to British authorities.

Red Pill or Blue Pill: How to Break Free from the Shackles of Society and Reclaim Your Status as Co-Creator

By Gerald O'Donnell / Creator of One Universal Mind

You are by far much more powerful that you can ever imagine in your present state of belief, as you all carry an innate gigantic power within yourself. This power, gifted at birth, is there for you to discover, if you only put some minimal effort at it and regain faith in yourself and our almost unlimited potential as a human family.

As Created human parts of the Creator, we can open to higher levels of ourselves - call them, if you will, Higher selves or intelligences - who operate with much more knowledge, vision, wisdom, and creative abilities that our lower limited earthly selves. They are all accessible from within the deep and almost infinite recesses of our own inner mind.

Although we do not yet know it or believe in it, we were birthed with the right, if we access these deeper Higher levels in awareness, to command them to please us and manifest our desires to us, instead or having it done the other way around, when they manifest life according to their desires, as is the case nowadays.

Yes, we can rule over our subconscious realm, instead of having it rule us. Please realize the profound implications of this truth.

It is time to let go of society's limited and restrictive opinions about yourself and what you can or should do about your life, no matter how well intentioned it is. It is high time for you to break the shackles in which society has constantly forced you into and programmed you from a very young age.

It is time for you to lift yourself out of the old repeating grooves of our old matrix. It is time to stop repeating old history over and over again with ever more destructive consequences.

Scientists find way to wipe out painful memories

By Danny Buckland, Daily Mirror

It sounds like something from a science fiction movie.

But researchers reckon they have found a way to erase painful memories and post-traumatic stress.
They discovered a link between a protein called PKM and recollections of disturbing incidents.

By targeting the specific brain circuit which holds the tormenting memory they believe they could weaken it or wipe it out.

The incredible study paves the way for treatment for war veterans and victims of horrific attacks. It may also help drug addicts and people with long-term memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s.
