Where are we humans going, as a species? If science fiction is any guide, we will genetically evolve like in X-Men, become genetically engineered as in Gattaca, or become cybernetically enhanced like General Grievous in Star Wars.
All of these may well be part of the story of our future, but I’m not holding my breath. The first of these—natural selection—is impracticably slow, and there’s a plausible case to be made that natural selection has all but stopped acting on us.
Genetic engineering could engender marked changes in us, but it requires a scientific bridge between genotypes—an organism’s genetic blueprints—and phenotypes, which are the organisms themselves and their suite of abilities. A sufficiently sophisticated bridge between these extremes is nowhere in sight.

Neuroscience vs Free Will: Are We Just Machines?
By Tom Chivers
/ Source: The Telegraph
For a man who thinks he's a robot, Professor Patrick Haggard is remarkably cheerful about it. "We certainly don't have free will," says the leading British neuroscientist. "Not in the sense we think." It's quite a way to start an interview.
We're in the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, in Queen Square in London, the nerve centre – if you will – of British brain research. Prof Haggard is demonstrating "transcranial magnetic stimulation", a technique that uses magnetic coils to affect one's brain, and then to control the body.
One of his research assistants, Christina Fuentes, is holding a loop-shaped paddle next to his head, moving it fractionally. "If we get it right, it might cause something." She presses a switch, and the coil activates with a click. Prof Haggard's hand twitches. "It's not me doing that," he assures me, "it's her."
The machinery can't force Prof Haggard to do anything really complicated – "You can't make me sign my name," he says, almost ruefully – but at one point, Christina is able to waggle his index finger slightly, like a schoolmaster. It's very fine control, a part of the brain specifically in command of a part of the body. "There's quite a detailed map of the brain's wiring to the body that you can build," he tells me.

Optimists Live Longer, Study Finds
ByLauren Cox / Source: ABC News
If a chipper person in your life is annoying you, maybe you should brace yourself for that person outliving you in the long haul, according to findings of a new study.
A study of 100,000 women presented at the American Psychosomatic Society's annual meeting Thursday found a strong correlation between optimism and a person's risk for cancer-related death, heart disease and early death.
Researchers surveyed the personality traits of middle-age women in 1994 as part of the Women's Health Initiative study run by the National Institutes of Health.
Eight years later, researchers found that the self-reported optimistic women were less likely to have died for any reason and had a 30 percent lower death rate from heart disease.
Meanwhile, women scoring high on the hostile scales had a higher general death rate and a 23 percent greater risk of dying from a cancer-related condition by the end of the study.

New Kidney 'Changed My Whole Personality'
A woman claims to have undergone a complete "personality transplant" after receiving a new kidney.
Cheryl Johnson, 37, says she has changed completely since receiving the organ in May. She believes that she must have picked up her new characteristics from the donor, a 59-year-old man who died from an aneurysm.
Now, not only has her personality changed, the single mother also claims that her tastes in literature have taken a dramatic turn. Whereas she only used to read low-brow novels, Dostoevsky has become her author of choice since the transplant.
Miss Johnson, from Penwortham, in Preston, Lancs, said: "You pick up your characteristics from your donor. My son said when I first had the transplant, I went stroppy and snappy - that wasn't me.

"Everything I Have I Owe to Alternate Universes"
By Burt Goldman / Creator of Quantum Jumping
I’m 81 years old, and in many ways, I’m just like any other person my age—I relish peace and quiet, I like spending time with my grandchildren, and I enjoy nothing more than sitting down to a good book.
I think it’s fair to say I’ve gone past my physical prime. No surprises there. But in the past few years, I’ve accomplished a variety of things that even I can’t wrap my head around. A handful of them include:
In the space of just a few years, how on earth did a normal American senior citizen like myself accomplish not one, but multiple goals that some people spend their entire lives chasing?

- Took up painting just before I turned 80—and my artwork hangs in a museum to prove it.
- With no knowledge of photography, got my photographs into the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
- Out of nowhere, found the inspiration to write multiple novels—including my first Western.
- Started a million-dollar online business.

Experiments Prove You Can Project Your Mind
By Jose Silva, Creator of The Silva Method
What is ESP? The original definition meant “extra sensory perception,” but scientific research has proven that definition to be inaccurate.
Subjective communication is not an extra sense; it is a prior sense, something everyone has but not everyone develops and uses consciously.
Subjective communication takes place during alpha brain wave activity. During alpha dream time, many people have “pre cognitive” dreams – they dream of something, and then it happens shortly afterwards.
Since your brain dips into alpha for very brief periods just microseconds approximately thirty times every minute, it is possible to have flashes of insight, intuition, creative thought, perception, awareness, while in a waking state.
When you stop and think about it, there is a very good chance that you have had moments when subjective communication was working for you even though you had no training at all to develop this faculty.

Top 10 Ways to Seem Smarter Than You Are
Source: The List Universe
We all want to seem smart around workmates and acquaintances, but we often don’t have the time to put in to further study to achieve this. Luckily, there are a few ways you can make yourself seem smarter with a minimum of effort. This is a list of the ten best tips for appearing smarter.
10. Learn a topic to debunk
The majority of “hot topics” are debated by people with very little knowledge of the subject. A good example of this is global warming - the majority of people you speak to on this subject will tell you how we must change our habits to prevent global warming, but few will know what “anthropogenic global warming” is. Spend a little time learning what the real experts on these faddish topics say and you simply can’t go wrong. Try to remember some of the names of authors so you can quote them.
9. Improve your Vocabulary
The simplest way to do this is to subscribe to a “word a day” emailing list. Remember to ensure that you memorize the correct pronunciation and spelling of the new word or phrase. Perhaps you can start with mesonoxian, or any of the words on the Top 10 Weird English Words

The 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People
Source: Watkins Review
We’re delighted to share our début list of the 100 most spiritually influential living people, that was published in the Spring issue #26 of the Watkins Review.* Yes, we’ve taken up the not so simple task of naming the most popular authors and spiritual teachers, whose contribution in spirituality and spreading awareness is affecting us all.
We live in an age of lists – from groceries and obituaries to Facebook friends, resume facts, lists of city capitals and lottery numbers. Of course, lists that classify the past, are easier to compile than lists that attempt to predict the future. With the holy grail of sorting algorithms, the world is sure to be your oyster.
The 100 Spiritual Power ListLists help us organize, explore and perceive our environments. But are so many lists really necessary? It is very much in vogue to publish lists of people: Time Magazine publishes an annual list of the 100 people who most influence the world; Forbes publishes several lists including a Celebrity 100 list, the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, and a list of 1000 Billionaires; Art Review’s Power 100 is an annual list of the worlds 100 most powerful collectors, artists, gallerists, etc…
The lists of lists of people, just keep going and going. However, the Watkins Review believes that an important list has been long overdue, and we are delighted to share with you our list of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People. Lists of influential people contribute to the discourse and issues that each person represents, and the Watkins Review hopes that our list will nurture the debates surrounding contemporary spirituality.

5 Famous Books Inspired by Dreams
By Beverly Jenkins / Source: ListVerse
Everybody dreams, but most of the time our dreams are nothing more than the subconscious mind processing thoughts and feelings from our waking hours. Yet, every so often a creative individual has a vivid dream which inspires them to put pen to paper and create a great work of literature. Below are five examples of famous novels that were inspired by their author’s sleeping mind.
1. Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer
In June of 2003, suburban Arizona mother Stephenie Meyer woke up from an intense dream in which two young lovers were lying together in a meadow, discussing why their love could never work. On her website, Meyers says, “One of these people was just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful, sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately.”

The Secret of Long Life is not what you think
By Janice Lloyd, USA TODAY
Prescription for a long life: Work hard. Don't retire early.
The idea that your job or your boss is leading you to an early grave is one of several myths debunked in an analysis of a 90-year study that followed 1,528 Americans. Among other myths: be optimistic, get married, go to church, eat broccoli and get a gym membership.
Researchers Howard Friedman and Leslie Martin report their conclusions in a new book, The Longevity Project. "Everybody has the ideas — don't stress, don't worry, don't work so hard, retire and go play golf," says Friedman, a psychology professor at University of California-Riverside. "We did not find these patterns to exist in people who thrived."
At the core of their 20 years of research is a study started by Stanford University psychologist Lewis Terman in 1921. Terman died in 1956, but other researchers carried on the study. One participant was biologist Ancel Keys, whose life-long work helped popularize the Mediterranean diet. He died in 2004 at age 100. He enjoyed gardening as an activity much of his life.

Can Dreams Predict the Future?
By Richard Wiseman, Author of Paranormality
Aberfan is a small village in South Wales. In the Sixties, many of those living there worked at a nearby colliery that had been built to exploit the large amount of high-quality coal in the area.
Although some of the waste from the mining operation had been stored underground, much of it had been piled on the steep hillsides surrounding the village.
Throughout October 1966, heavy rain lashed down on the area and seeped into the porous sandstone of the hills. Unfortunately, no one realised the water was then flowing into several hidden springs and slowly transforming the pit waste into soft slurry.
Just after nine o’clock on the morning of October 21, the side of the hill subsided and half a million tons of debris started to move rapidly towards the village.
Although some of the material came to a halt on the lower parts of the hill, much of it slid into Aberfan and smashed into the village school. A handful of children were pulled out alive during the first hour or so of the rescue effort, but no other survivors emerged.
In all, 116 schoolchildren and 28 adults lost their lives in the tragedy.
Psychiatrist John Barker visited the village the day after the landslide.
Barker had a long-standing interest in the paranormal and wondered whether the extreme nature of events in Aberfan might have caused large numbers of people to experience a premonition about the tragedy.

2012 and Beyond: How to Benefit from the Mayan Prophecies
By Dr. Laurie Nadel, Ph.D. / Source: The Karma Dialogues
There has been a lot of talk about Mayan prophecies that foretell the end to civilization as we know it... coming up in December 2012. (That's right. It's just around the corner!) The ancient Mayan astronomers' calendar is studied today by scientists who are curious about the calendar's uncanny accuracy.
It is quite possible that like Y2K, the year 2012 will roll over to 2013 with just the usual fireworks. But there could be more to the 2012 phenomenon. For the past five years, I have interviewed scientists, futurists, economists, and metaphysicians, including best-selling author and master hypnotist Richard Sutphen.
It turns out that Richard has been conducting research on the 2012 phenomenon for at least a decade. What we have found is that a surprising number of different disciplines converge on this very subject. The timeline is not precisely the same but it's pretty darn close.

Fake Smiling Makes You Miserable
Pretending to be happy can actually make you more miserable - especially if you're a woman, according to a new study.
Researchers found that walking around with a forced smile and faking happiness simply led to people feeling gloomier.
So, putting a brave face on your woes could actually be counterproductive.
The research found that women suffered more than men when pretending to be happy.
Psychologist Dr Brent Scott, who led the study, said employers should take note because forcing workers to smile when dealing with the public can backfire.

Thoughtography: The Psychic Polaroid Photos of Ted Serios
Ted Serios was a humble bell-hop from Chicago, a hard drinking, hard smoking working man. For years, he lived a fairly ordinary life, but Ted was nothing but ordinary.
What set Ted apart was his incredible claims that he could 'think' images onto ordinary photographic film. A process that Ted dubbed 'Thoughtography'.
So called 'psychic photographers' were far from uncommon, and a great many of them who claimed to have this ability were exposed as fakes or charlatans. Because of this, Ted's claims were widely rubbished.
One man however, a Dr Jule Eisenbud was sufficiently intrigued by Ted to fly to Chicago to conduct a series of experiments.

Have You Caught a Mind Virus?
By Dr. Robert Anthony, Creator of the Rapid Manifestation MP3
I understand what I am about to say may sound crazy to you, but allow me to suggest the possibility that you have been totally brainwashed and you have unknowingly become your own worst enemy.
In fact, this is exactly what is happening to millions of people. And most likely, you are one of them.
What I am talking about is the SUBLIMINAL and SUBCONSCIOUS programming you are getting - programming that is imprinted on your subconscious without your knowledge.
I am not saying there is an organized conspiracy to program your mind. The people that are spreading these negative messages don't even know they are doing it!
The problem is as you are exposed to these mind viruses, you are likely to be infected.

Ferrari Developing Mind Reading Car?
By Craig Howie / Source: AOL
Stepping into a Ferrari's sleek cockpit is enough to set anyone's pulse racing. But what if that was a bad thing? Italy's most illustrious motoring marque is working on an in-car system that monitors a driver's mental state behind the wheel, according to a British car magazine. Effectively, future mind-blowing Ferraris may also read a driver's mind.
The idea behind the device is thaat Ferrari drivers may get just a little excited -- go figure -- and this heightened state could lead them to drive more dangerously. The way it works is that a series of in-cabin sensors will monitor a driver's heart rate, blood pressure, facial reactions and brain activity.
The sensors will act to increase safety by detecting not only a state of excitement but also by monitoring a driver's alertness, or indeed tiredness, by way of their blink rate. The car's performance is then automatically adjusted through the car's stability control systems.

By Neil Slade
You have pre-existing circuits in your brain for psychic and telekinetic powers. They are in a dormant (currently unused) area of your brain. By learning how to click your amygdala forward, you can activate these areas easily and quickly. You can change clouds, maybe even the weather, with your mind.
This is something I learned to do myself twenty years ago, and was able to teach friends almost instantly. I know at least six people who can do this without any problem, and actually are rather nonchalant about it. You will be able to do this yourself and when you do, a part of your frontal lobes will be activated, and reality will never seem quite the same any more.

Army Used Psy-Ops on Senators to Get War Funding
Source: Daily Mail
American soldiers were illegally ordered to apply psychological pressure to U.S. senators as they toured Afghanistan in a bid to secure more troops and money for the military, according to an officer serving in a unit specialising in 'psy-ops'.
The U.S. Army officer is said to have received an official reprimand after his unit resisted orders, from the command of Lieutenant General William Caldwell, which they said were illegal.
Those said to have been targeted for the operation were former presidential candidate Senator John McCain and VIPs including European diplomats and government ministers.
The allegations are included in the latest revelations about U.S. military operations in Afghanistan from American music, popular culture and politics magazine Rolling Stone.
