We're Living in the Future. Try to Stay Excited.

Source: Discovery Magazine

In just a few days, the first decade of the 21st Century will be over. Can we finally admit we live in the future? Sure, we won’t be celebrating New Years by flying our jetpacks through the snow or watching the countdown from our colony on Mars, and so what if I can’t teleport to work?

Thanks to a combination of 3G internet, a touch-screen interface, and Wikipedia, the smartphone in my front pocket is pretty much the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I can communicate with anyone anywhere at anytime. I can look up any fact I want, from which puppeteers played A.L.F. to how many flavors of quark are in the Standard Model, and then use the same touch-screen device to take a picture, deposit a check, and navigate the subway system.

We live in the future, ladies and gentleman.

Has Our Universe Won the Cosmic Jackpot?

By Steve Paulson / Source: Salon.com

Forget science fiction. If you want to hear some really crazy ideas about the universe, just listen to our leading theoretical physicists. Wish you could travel back in time? You can, according to some interpretations of quantum mechanics. Could there be an infinite number of parallel worlds? Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg considers this a real possibility.

Even the big bang, which for decades has been the standard explanation for how the universe started, is getting a second look. Now, many cosmologists speculate that we live in a "multiverse," with big bangs exploding all over the cosmos, each creating its own bubble universe with its own laws of physics. And lucky for us, our bubble turned out to be life-friendly.

But if you really want to start an argument, ask a room full of physicists this question: Are the laws of physics fine-tuned to support life? Many scientists hate this idea -- what's often called "the anthropic principle." They suspect it's a trick to argue for a designer God.

But more and more physicists point to various laws of nature that have to be calibrated just right for stars and planets to form and for life to appear. For instance, if gravity were just slightly stronger, the universe would have collapsed long before life evolved. But if gravity were a tiny bit weaker, no galaxies or stars could have formed. If the strong nuclear force had been slightly different, red giant stars would never produce the fusion needed to form heavier atoms like carbon, and the universe would be a vast, lifeless desert.

Are these just happy coincidences? The late cosmologist Fred Hoyle called the universe "a put-up job." Princeton physicist Freeman Dyson has suggested that the universe, in some sense, "knew we were coming."

7 Attitudes That Are Keeping You Broke

By Wellington Rodrigues,
Creator of Mastering Your Prosperity Codes

There has been a lot of talk about inflation, depression and recession lately. There are only two ways to really “shield” yourself from the dire news that are flooding the media left and right; one is to move to a remote cave in the Himalayas. The second (and easier) option is...
to transform your current “prosperity vibration”.

And how do you know that you’re NOT vibrating in a negative frequency when it comes to money and prosperity? EASY. I have a quick quiz to all my personal coaching clients who face money challenges. Throughout the years, I was able to track SEVEN characteristics possessed by those who have reoccurring financial “dramas” in their lives.

Take a look at each and see if any of those applies to you at this moment...

Meditation Changes Your Brain in Only 8 Weeks

Participating in an 8-week mindfulness meditation program appears to make measurable changes in brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress.

In a study that will appear in the January 30 issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, a team led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers report the results of their study, the first to document meditation-produced changes over time in the brain's grey matter.

"Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day," says Sara Lazar, PhD, of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program, the study's senior author.

"This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing."

10 Modern Methods of Mind Control

By Nicholas West / Source: Activist Post
The more one researches mind control, the more one will come to the conclusion that there is a coordinated script that has been in place for a very long time with the goal to turn the human race into non-thinking automatons.

For as long as man has pursued power over the masses, mind control has been orchestrated by those who study human behavior in order to bend large populations to the will of a small "elite" group.  Today, we have entered a perilous phase where mind control has taken on a physical, scientific dimension that threatens to become a permanent state if we do not become aware of the tools at the disposal of the technocratic dictatorship unfolding on a worldwide scale.

Modern mind control is both technological and psychological.  Tests show that simply by exposing the methods of mind control, the effects can be reduced or eliminated, at least for mind control advertising and propaganda.  More difficult to counter are the physical intrusions, which the military-industrial complex continues to develop and improve upon.

The Amazing Story of the 256-Year-Old Man

By Chris Ingham Brooke
Source: Environmental Graffiti

According to the 1933 obituaries in both Time Magazine and the New York Times, Li Ching-Yun was reported to have buried 23 wives and fostered 180 descendants by the time he died at the age of 256.

Was he really that old? Could he have forgotten his own birthday or exaggerated his claim? Environmental Graffiti investigates.

The Secrets to an Interminable Life

“Keep a quiet heart, sit like a tortoise, walk sprightly like a pigeon and sleep like a dog.” These were the words of advice Li gave to Wu Pei-fu, the warlord, who took Li into his house to learn the secret of extremely long life.

Li maintained that inward calm and peace of mind were the secrets to incredible longevity. His diet after all, was mainly based on rice and wine.

The Case for Reincarnation

By J. Allan Danelek / Source: New Dawn Magazine
What happens to us when we die? It’s a question everyone eventually asks themselves at some point in their life. It transcends racial, social, political, economic and gender lines, making it the one question common to all human beings whether we like it or not.

Yet ever since the first men and woman began pondering their mortality a hundred thousand years ago, the answer has eluded us. What does happen when we die? What becomes of our soul, our mind, our personality – our very essence? For that matter, do we even have such a thing as a soul, or is it all an illusion we have created to give ourselves a sense of permanence and the hope of immortality?

The rationalist answers this query by proclaiming that since we are nothing more than a collection of cells and our brains simply tissue encased within a mantle of bone, nothing can happen to us when we die. The essence, personality, mind – soul – or whatever we wish to call our consciousness, ceases to exist, endowing our time on this planet with no more meaning than that which we choose to give it during our brief sojourn here.

This is, of course, the position of the atheist, which is what makes atheism, in my opinion, so easy. It requires nothing because it offers nothing, which strikes me as a fair trade.

Name Your 3 Wishes -- and Watch Them Happen

Source: Mind Movies 2.0

Imagine if you had a genie that could grant you 3 wishes. Isn't that the childhood fantasy you had when you were little?

But as with most childhood fairy tales, I'm sure that fantasy turned into disillusionment when you realized that you can't simply wish something into existence, right? Somewhere along the way, the child in you became an adult -- and dreams became nothing but a head-in-the-clouds waste of time.

Whatever your age may be, I'm about to challenge your ability to believe in your secret hopes and dreams again.

What if you could name 3 wishes you want in your life ... and then use your computer or TV to make those wishes come true?

Does that sound far-fetched?

Don't worry. That's what I thought, too ... at first.

But rest assured that the manifestation technology I'm about to reveal to you is something deeply rooted in solid science -- the science of emotion. And in a moment, I'll prove it to you.

Medical Science vs. Medical Miracles

By Randall Fitzgerald / Skepticism Examiner

When mainstream Western physicians try to explain medical ‘miracles’ that come cloaked in religious symbolism, or that were inspired by rituals of superstition, the self-described atheists among them sometimes find themselves challenged by a personal crisis of faith in their own ultra-rationalist belief system.

British physician Richard Westcott confessed to confronting this dilemma in an article for the British Medical Journal in 2002, headlined “Can miracles happen?” in which he related the story of an astonishing recovery by one of his patients who had been diagnosed with an incurable type of cancer.

This patient, who Dr. Westcott identified only by the first name of Jim, had worked as a submarine engineer and as a consequence, had come into contact with asbestos commonly used in pipes. He developed a swollen right breast and several biopsies established a firm tissue diagnosis of mesothelioma, which contact with asbestos is known to cause.

The tumor had grown quickly until it was working its way through Jim’s chest wall. Such malignant tumors were invariably fatal. “Radiotherapy hardly checked its progress,” reported Dr. Westcott, “and Jim was deteriorating badly.”

An App That Reads Your Mind

By Matt Blake / Daily Mail

It's a device that would be more at home on the set of a Star Wars movie than the streets of Britain.
But an iPhone application has been developed that can read minds.

The XWave allows users to control on-screen objects with their minds as well as train their brains to control attention spans and relaxation levels.

The device - that could confuse Luke Skywalker himself - is the latest in the field of emerging mind-controlled games and devices and works via a headset strapped around the user's forehead, plugging into the iPhone jack.

The Science of Luck

By Drawk Kwast, Creator of The Alpha Male Lifestyle

The biggest reason you don't have the life you want is because you are focused on what you aren't getting. You see only your lack of luck.

Successful people live life as they desire because they focus on what they are getting. These people see all their options, and when they receive the benefits from wisely acting on the options, everyone else calls them lucky.

It was Machiavelli who told us that success is 50% luck, and the rest is how we respond to that luck through cunning and bravura.

Personally I believe that life is only 10% what happens to me and 90% how I respond to it, but this goes way beyond seeing the glass half empty or half full. This is the difference between seeing the glass or dying of thirst.

A Bionic Sex Chip for your Brain

By Bo Kindstrand / The Sunday Times

Forget Viagra: scientists are working on an electronic “sex chip” that will be
able to stimulate pleasure centres in the brain.

The prospect of the chip, which could be a decade away, is emerging from progress in deep brain stimulation, in which tiny shocks from implanted electrodes are given to the brain. The technology has been used in America to treat Parkinson’s disease.

In recent months scientists have been focusing on an area of the brain just
behind the eyes known as the orbitofrontal cortex. This is associated with feelings of pleasure derived from eating and sex.

Scientists Find Evidence of Mental Time Travel

The ability to remember the past and imagine the future can significantly affect a person's decisions in life. Scientists refer to the brain’s ability to think about the past, present, and future as "chronesthesia," or mental time travel, although little is known about which parts of the brain are responsible for these conscious experiences.

In a new study, researchers have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates of mental time travel and better understand the nature of the mental time in which the metaphorical "travel" occurs.

"Mental time travel consists of two independent sets of processes: (1) those that determine the contents of any act of such ‘travel’: what happens, who are the 'actors,' where does the action occur; it is similar to the contents of watching a movie – everything that you see on the screen; and (2) those that determine the subjective moment of time in which the action takes place – past, present, or future," Tulving told PhysOrg.com.

Man Finds His Exact Double on Facebook

By Kris Gilmartin / Daily Record

A stunned photographer told yesterday how he met his exact double on Facebook - and discovered they lived only about 10 miles apart.

Graham Comrie feared someone was impersonating him online when a friend emailed to say a man was pretending to be him on the social networking site.

His "impersonator" was even said to be using his photos.

The more Graham looked into it, the stranger it got - until he realised this person wasn't trying to imitate him but appeared to be his doppelganger.

Amazed by what he saw, he contacted his lookalike, Graham Cormie, and discovered they were leading parallel lives.

Positive Thinking is a Soldier's Best Weapon

Source: Futurity.org

Army soldiers fighting in Iraq who were able to maintain a positive outlook in the midst of trauma were less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.

Findings—from the first combat-zone study of its kind—will be published in the January issue of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology.

“There is evidence that if we can train people to be more psychologically resilient—that is, less catastrophic in their thinking and more optimistic and more hopeful—then they function better when they encounter traumatic situations,” says John Schaubroeck, lead researcher and a psychology professor at Michigan State University. “They may be less likely to experience symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder down the line, although we don’t know that for sure.”

People who have high levels of resiliency still experience stress and symptoms of health problems, adds Schaubroeck. “It’s just that resiliency means they get over the event relatively quickly, while a low-resiliency person might have a hard time letting go.”

French village which will 'survive 2012 Armageddon' plagued by visitors

By Henry Samuel, The Telegraph

Bugarach, population 189, is a peaceful farming village in the Aude region, southwestern France and sits at the foot of the Pic de Bugarach, the highest mountain in the Corbières wine-growing area.
But in the past few months, the quiet village has been inundated by groups of esoteric outsiders who believe the peak is an "alien garage".

According to them, extraterrestrials are quietly waiting in a massive cavity beneath the rock for the world to end, at which point they will leave, taking, it is hoped, a lucky few humans with them.

Most believe Armageddon will take place on December 21, 2012, the end date of the ancient Maya calendar, at which point they predict human civilisation will come to an end. Another favourite date mentioned is 12, December, 2012. They see Bugarach as one of perhaps several "sacred mountains" sheltered from the cataclysm.

Futurology: The tricky art of knowing what will happen next

By Finlo Rohrer / BBC News Magazine

A 1972 book which predicts what life would be like in 2010 has been reprinted after attracting a cult following, but how hard is it to tell the future?

Geoffrey Hoyle is often asked why he predicted everybody would be wearing jumpsuits by 2010. He envisioned a world where everybody worked a three-day week and had their electric cars delivered in tubes of liquid.

These colourful ideas from his 1972 children's book, 2010: Living in the Future, helped prompt a Facebook campaign to track him down. His work has now been reprinted with the year in the title amended to 2011.

"I've been criticised because I said people [would] wear jumpsuits," explains Hoyle, the son of noted astronomer and science fiction author Fred Hoyle. "We don't wear jumpsuits but to a certain extent the idea of the jumpsuit is the restriction of liberties."

Hoyle's book is a product of its time. The move towards a planned society with an emphasis on communal living colour it.
