Think Yourself Thin: How Your Memory Can Cut Cravings

By David Derbyshire
Source: The Daily Mail

If you're feeling hunger pangs but want to lose weight, try thinking yourself thinner.

British scientists have shown that actively remembering your last meal suppresses appetite and reduces the desire to snack on junk food.

They have also shown that concentrating on food while eating - rather than grabbing a meal in front of the TV - makes you less likely to get hungry later on.

The findings suggest that weight watchers can teach themselves to be less greedy - and that techniques such as hypnotism and behavioural therapy could help.

Keeping Your Highest Moments Permanent

By Frank Tibolt
Author of A Touch of Greatness

The world's greatest thinkers, philosophers, educators and religious leaders
proclaim through the ages . . . YOUR LIFE IS WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS MAKE IT.

Your thoughts control your life. But you control your thoughts. You are free to
think success thoughts — positive thoughts or failure — negative thoughts.

I assume you want quick results. Although positive thinking alone can in time
revolutionize your life, this step alone takes a long time ...usually years.

Fortunately, there's a quicker way than positive thinking. That's the method of
ACTION, DOING, EXERCISE, PRACTICE. You'll develop more power, physical, mental, or any skill in 30 minutes of practice than in 20 years of positive thinking.

No one ever became a champion athlete or master musician in 20 years of positive
thinking about music or athletics UNLESS HE ALSO PRACTICED. Even the Bible states: “Faith without works is dead”.

But the fastest method of all, so far discovered, is action and positive thinking
combined. That's the method used in this program.

Are You Being Influenced Without Your Knowledge?

Source: The Power of Conversational Hypnosis

It might seem shocking, but every single day
people are trying to influence and persuade you without your knowledge.

Some of this is relatively harmless. But a lot
of it most certainly is not.

It's not talked about a lot but it's the dark
side of hypnosis.

How a Good Night's Sleep Can Make You Happier and Healthier

Source: Digital Sandman

I know you've noticed that over the last several decades there has been a massive decline in the amount of sleep we get and the quality of it.

In New York City businesses are thriving that offer people a cubicle where they can go take a nap during their lunch hour!

Millions of people have resorted to popping pills (42 MILLION prescriptions were filled in 2005) and these folks are taking their chances with the nasty side effects in the pursuit of proper rest. These millions of people – does that include you? – are putting their health, quality of life and even the expected length of their life in serious jeopardy.

You probably don’t need a well-rested writer to tell you that sleep deprivation isn’t fun. But you may not realize exactly how much deeper this problem runs and how much more significant the impact is on your life.

Can We Really Transplant a Human Soul?

By Dr. Danny Penman
Source: The Daily Mail

The progress of medical science in the past 30 years has been so rapid that yesterday's miracles are tomorrow's commonplace procedures.

So it has proved with heart transplants, which have become almost routine in hospitals around the world.

Yet every once in a while a story emerges which should cause us all to sit up and take note that there is nothing "routine" or "commonplace" about such complex operations.

The suggestion, highlighted again this week, that donor patients could not only be acquiring the organs but also the memories - or even the soul - of the donor is surely one such story.

This bizarre possibility was raised by the inexplicable case of Sonny Graham - a seemingly happily married 69-year-old man living in the U.S. state of Georgia. He shot himself without warning, having shown no previous signs of unhappiness, let alone depression.

His friends described it as an act of passion, not of reason.

The case might have remained just an isolated tragedy were it not for the fact that Sonny had received a transplanted heart from a man who had also shot himself - in identical circumstances.

To make things even more intriguing, shortly after receiving the heart transplant, Sonny tracked down the wife of the donor - and fell instantly in love with her.

With Age Comes Happiness

Newsflash for rock stars and teenagers: It turns out everything doesn't go downhill as we age - the golden years really are golden.

That's according to eye-opening research that found the happiest Americans are the oldest, and older adults are more socially active than the stereotype of the lonely senior suggests.

The two go hand-in-hand - being social can help keep away the blues.

"The good news is that with age comes happiness," said study author Yang Yang, a University of Chicago sociologist. "Life gets better in one's perception as one ages."

A certain amount of distress in old age is inevitable, including aches, pains and deaths of loved ones and friends. But older people generally have learned to be more content with what they have than younger adults, Yang said.

A hypnotherapist had an 83-minute operation on his arm with no anaesthetic.

At one point, Alex Lenkei even heard the surgeon say: "Can I have the saw, please?"

Because he had put himself into a hypnotic trance, however, he said he felt no pain as the doctors chiselled out a walnut- sized chunk of bone from his wrist.

Mr Lenkei, 61, had the operation to treat his painful osteoarthritis. He said: "The results have been amazing. I feel ace."

The Spontaneous Healing of Belief

Interview with Gregg Braden,
By Laurie Nadel, Ph.D.

Do you believe that heart-based belief—something that you believe and feel to be true from the core of your being—affects how your body heals and the movement of molecules?

Do you believe that you were born with the power to reverse disease, to create peace and abundance, or perhaps even change reality itself?

Gregg Braden does.

A former computer engineer for Cisco systems, Braden spent more than two decades studying forgotten texts in remote monasteries in the high Himalayas; traveling to remote locations to consult with sages about ancient wisdom.

In The Spontaneous Power of Belief: Shattering the Paradigm of False Limits, Braden argues for the existing of an underlying code that can help you communicate directly with a matrix of energy that some call “The Universe.” Others call this divine matrix “The Creator” or “God.”

Here are highlights from my interview with Gregg Braden.

Hypnosis Speeds Healing After Surgery

By Steve G. Jones, M.Ed.
Clinical Hypnotherapist
Better Living With Hypnosis

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist I have been a major proponent and supporter of hypnosis and the effect it can have on people. I have helped people with different problems such as wanting to quit smoking to getting rid of a phobia. I have helped people reduce the amount of pain they are in and I have also helped people gain confidence in their every day lives. I believe that hypnosis can help a very wide range of people and the issues they face.

In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, research was performed by Carol Ginandes (Harvard Medical School) and Patricia Brooks (Union Institute). They were researching whether hypnosis could aide in healing after a surgery.

The study included eighteen women who were undergoing breast reduction surgery. These eighteen women were broken into three groups of six. One group received normal care. The second group received counseling by a psychologist. And the third group went to hypnotherapy sessions before and after their surgery. Both the psychological support group and the hypnosis group received eight sessions once a week.

Using the Power of the Sun to Improve Vision and Boost Immunity

By Rich Stacel
Source: Natural News

It's becoming common knowledge in alternative medical circles that the sun, far from being the enemy to health that western medicine has made it out to be is really our best friend when it comes to health, healing, immunity and even strengthening our eyesight.

How can this be? Well in this article, I'm going to show you how and teach you a little known Taoist technique to not only improve the eyesight and eye strength, but to increase your overall immunity simply by using the sun with a simple eye exercise that only takes a few seconds to do each morning and evening.

The Sun pours unimaginable amounts of radiation into our atmosphere on a daily basis. Of course, in modern times it's well known that we can use the sun to generate electricity and it's only recently become known that the sun is the best source of stimulating the production of vitamin D within the body which is a vital nutrient to be sure. But there is another way in which the sun heals and boosts immunity. That way is through something called the "Oculo-Endocrine System".

Scientists Probe the Secrets of Meditation

By Naomi Law
Source: BBC

Scientists are beginning to uncover evidence that meditation has a tangible effect on the brain.

Sceptics argue that it is not a practical way to try to deal with the stresses of modern life.
But the long years when adherents were unable to point to hard science to support their belief in the technique may finally be coming to an end.

When Carol Cattley's husband died it triggered a relapse of the depression which had not plagued her since she was a teenager.
"I instantly felt as if I wanted to die," she said. "I couldn't think of what else to do."

Carol sought medical help and managed to control her depression with a combination of medication and a psychological treatment called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

However, she believes that a new, increasingly popular course called Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) - which primarily consists of meditation - brought about her full recovery.

Europe Plans Crackdown on Psychics

By Caroline Davies
Source: The Observer

The evocative question 'Is there anybody there?' conjures up images of mediums summoning spirits in a darkened room. But now psychics must add a few riders before they invoke the voices of the dead, thanks to new consumer laws due to come into force. Breathless audiences are now likely to be asked: 'Is there anybody here... who is vulnerable, of nervous disposition, or likely to sue?'

Indeed, a whole list of disclaimers must be added to the spiritualists' spiel if they are to avoid an avalanche of writs following the repeal next month of the Fraudulent Mediums Act, to be replaced by the new Consumer Protection Regulations.

Promises to raise the dead, secure good fortune or heal through the laying on of hands are all at risk of legal action from disgruntled customers. Spiritualists say they will be forced to issue disclaimers, such as 'this is a scientific experiment, the results of which cannot be guaranteed'. They claim the new regulations will leave them open to malicious civil action by sceptics.

The Incredible Power of Contentment

Source: Zen Habits

While many readers have noted my efforts and articles on self-improvement, what I haven’t stressed as much is the beauty of becoming content with what you have and who you already are.

I’m definitely a goal-oriented person — I always have my eye on a goal, whether that’s writing a book, running a marathon, improving my blog, waking early, losing weight, or one of a dozen other goals I’ve had (and usually achieved) in the last couple of years. And once I’ve achieved a goal, I begin looking for another: now that I finished my second marathon, I’m already looking for a third.

So isn’t that a contradiction? Doesn’t that seem to indicate that I’m not content with my life? Not at all. I’m extremely content with my life, with what I have, and with who I am. I have accepted that I am the type of person who will always be striving for a goal, the type of person who enjoys a challenge, and who enjoys the journey. It’s not the goal that matters to me — it’s the journey to get there that is so fun. And I’m content with being that type of person.

So contentment isn’t a matter with being content with your situation in life and never trying to improve it. It’s a matter of being content with what you have — but realizing that as humans, we will always try to improve, no matter how happy we are. If we don’t, we have given up on life.

20% of Scientists Use Brain-Boosting Drugs

By Daniel J. DeNoon
WebMD Medical News

One in five Nature readers -- mostly scientists -- say they up their mental performance with drugs such as Ritalin, Provigil, and Inderal.

The online poll from the British science magazine didn't ask readers how they felt about professional athletes using drugs to enhance their physical performance. But when asked how they felt about professional thinkers using drugs to enhance their cognitive performance, nearly 80% said it should be allowed.

While only a fifth of the poll's 1,400 respondents admitted to drug use to improve concentration, nearly two-thirds said they knew of a colleague who did. And if there were "a normal risk of mild side effects," nearly 70% of the scientists said they'd boost their brain power by taking a "cognitive-enhancing drug."

Army Tests Yoga & Meditation for Post-Traumatic Stress

By Noah Shachtman
Source: Wired Blog

The military is scrambling for new ways to treat the brain injuries and post-traumatic stress of troops returning home from war. And every kind of therapy -- no matter how far outside the accepted medical form -- is being considered.

The Army just unveiled a $4 million program to investigate everything from "spiritual ministry, transcendental meditation, [and] yoga" to "bioenergies such as Qi gong, Reiki, [and] distant healing" to mend the psyches of wounded troops.

As many as 17 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have some form of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, one congressional study estimates. Nearly 3,300 troops have suffered traumatic brain injury, or TBI, according to statistics assembled last summer. And the lifetime costs of treating these ailments could pile up to as much as $35 billion, a Columbia University report guesses.

Small wonder, then, that the government is looking for alternate means to treat these injuries. The Defense Department "is dedicated to supporting evidence-based approaches to medical treatment and wants to support the use of alternative therapies if they are proven efficacious," notes a recently-issued request for proposals.

Expensive Placebos Work Better Than Cheap Ones

By Laura Brinn,
Source: Duke University

A 10-cent pill doesn't kill pain as well as a $2.50 pill, even when they are identical placebos, according to a provocative study by Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist at Duke University.

"Physicians want to think it's the medicine and not their enthusiasm about a particular drug that makes a drug more therapeutically effective, but now we really have to worry about the nuances of interaction between patients and physicians," said Ariely, whose findings appear as a letter in the March 5 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

I realize that most of you don't really want to learn quantum physics or quantum theory. It's just lot of math! Subliminal Messages Make Us Work Harder

By Roger Highfield
Science Editor, The Telegraph

Bad news for hard pressed workers: a subliminal "pep talk" can make people work harder, even though they do not realise it.

Flashing up motivating words for an instant on a screen can make people try more, according to Prof Henk Aarts of Utrecht University, Netherlands.

The professor is using this method to study human limits, for instance to uncover the true abilities of an athlete. "I am interested in what the mind can do for us, without us knowing it."

Brain Scientist has a Stroke of Enlightenment

By Jill Bolte Taylor

Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story of recovery and awareness -- of how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.
