The Happiest Day of the Year

In case you didn't realise, you've just experienced the happiest day of 2005!

According to a psychologist, fine weather and the prospect of some time off work helped make Friday the happiest day of the year.

Dr Cliff Arnall, specialist in seasonal disorders at the University of Cardiff, devised a formula to work out when Britain would hit a national hight point.

He used the equation: O + (N x S) + Cpm divided by T + He, which takes six different variables into account.

The Power of the Placebo Effect in Healing

By Stephen Wright
Red Nova

Beliefs, consciousness and the mind have a lot more to do with health and healing than modern science understands or will admit to.

Oxford University recently set up a department for the exploration of mind and consciousness. It was spurred in part by general ignorance in society of the mind-body-spirit connection.

Recently, on a surgical ward, I was practising the healing approach of therapeutic touch (TT). There was no hostility, but there was certainly a degree of dismissal from some quarters. The ultimate put down TT often attracts is that old chestnut: Of course, it'sjust a placebo effect.'

There is much evidence to illustrate the connection between belief and physiological effects (Pert 1997, Peters 2002). Numerous studies have shown that giving an inert substance in a drug trial often has the same effect as giving the drug itself.

The placebo effect is still an effect. It seems that placebos can assist in the cure of disease just as well,'as long as the patient believes they might be getting the real drug or treatment' (Hamer 2004).

There have been compelling studies into 'non-local healing' - the change in a person's physical state, for example in the cure of disease, when there is the intention of another to heal through prayer or'sending healing energy'.

The Single Most Important Question You Can Ask Yourself

By Chris Green
Author of Conquering Fear

Of the many questions you ask yourself every day, one question is by far more important than all of the rest put together. It is a powerful question that will bring clarity, motivation and purpose to your whole existence.

The question is simply this: "What do I want from life?" Providing a clear, precise answer brings total focus to our lives. But very few people can. Why?

OK, I meet many people through my professional and social lives and what amazes me is that very few of them can answer this question. Most of them answer in abstract terms, such as:

  • "I want money. Lots of money."
  • "I want to be happy."
  • "I want a beautiful house."
  • "I want a sports car."
  • "I just want to meet someone, fall in love and settle down."
  • "I DON’T REALLY KNOW."
Amazingly, the last one is the most common. And the problem with all of the above answers is that they aren’t really answers at all. Because none of them give a specific, precise answer.

World's First Psychic Museum Opens

The front door of 35 Stonegate isn't painted bright purple by chance.

The colour is supposedly linked to psychic enchantment and, as the address is home to what is billed as the world's first Psychic Museum, it seems quite apt.

It's called a museum, but is more of an exploration centre for the study of parapsychology and unexplained phenomena, where visitors can try their hand at everything from telekinesis to dowsing.

The idea for the museum, on one of York's most historic streets, came from the North Yorkshire-based astrologer Jonathan Cainer, who bought the former bookshop six years ago.

The museum is already open to the public, with each 90 minute tour, led by the curiously-named tour manager Andy Dextrous, taking visitors around a building which wouldn't look out of place in an Edgar Allan Poe tale.

The story behind the idea, perhaps not surprisingly, is rather odd.

How to Change Your Life With a Single Word

By Gay Hendricks, Ph.D.
©2005 The Hendricks Institute

If there is one thing I have learned from my thirty-plus years as
a psychologist, it is that words have an exceptional power to heal and change lives. I saw my first therapy client in 1968, then went on to a career in which I did approximately 20,000 sessions as a therapist and also trained several thousand counselors, therapists and coaches.

During that time I saw many seeming miracles that came from
changing a word, a phrase or a single thought.

Why Do Words Have Such Power?

William James, the founder of the field of psychology in the United States, said that the most important discovery of his time was that you could change the quality of your life by changing the quality of your thoughts. Since he lived in the great century from 1800-1900 when telephones, steam engines, and other useful gadgets were invented, he was paying a high compliment to this principle.

Thousands of years ago the Buddha said it this way: Everything we are arises with our thoughts. Here is one reason this idea is so powerful and useful: You don’t need any outside help to change your thoughts. You can change a word or a thought instantly, and you can do it any time you want. Knowing these simple truths gives you a tremendous power that comes completely from within.

Mind Controlled Electronics on the Horizon

A Silicon Valley startup is working on a system to give users the power to control a mobile device with the power of thought.

Over the years, science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke has enriched popular culture with dozens of notable quotes, but his most famous line is, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Truer words were never spoken. If you were able to travel back in time to the middle ages and drive a Buick down the road, honking your horn as you passed the ox carts, it's likely you'd be taken for a wizard with the power to make horses invisible. Today, if you were able to control your mobile phone by thought alone, people might think you had telekinetic abilities.

But a company in Cupertino, California, called NeuroSky is proposing to do just that. It's developing a technology that uses electrical signals produced by the brain and eye movement to control electronic devices.

The Biology of Enlightenment

By Sol Luckman
PhoenixRegenetics.org

The evolution from human to divine consciousness involves healing duality and its legacy of karma and disease at the cellular and atomic levels. There is no illness that cannot be healed simply through intention. Many of the thousands of documented so-called miracle healings powerfully demonstrate the impact of consciousness on physical as well as emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Mind-body medicine, which is statistically valid enough to be taught in today’s medical schools, offers additional proof of our ability to heal ourselves. Molecular biologist Bruce Lipton’s research further indicates that people can modify their DNA and overcome life-threatening illnesses simply by changing their consciousness.

Deepak Chopra has remarked that “the similarity between a thought and a photon is very deep.” A photon is a particle or quantum of light or other electromagnetic radiation. Dr. Chopra is implying a connection between thought and light. In many shamanic traditions, thought (intention) is considered a form or function of higher-dimensional light.

Mind is “the illuminating energy which ‘Lights the way’ of an idea or form to be transmitted and received,” once wrote Alice Bailey. “Upon a beam of light can the energy of the mind materialize.” Following this line of reasoning, we can imagine ourselves not only as “frozen light” (to quote Dr. Richard Gerber) but also as “frozen thought.”

What to Think For Perfect Health

By Wallace D. Wattles
Excerpt from "The Science of Being Well"

In order to sever all mental relations with disease, you must enter into mental relations with health, making the process positive, not negative - one of assumption, not of rejection. You are to receive or appropriate health rather than to reject and deny disease. Denying disease accomplishes next to nothing; it does little good to cast out the devil and leave the house vacant, for he will presently return with others worse than himself. When you enter into full and constant mental relations with health, you must of necessity cease all relationship with disease.

The first step in the Science of Being Well, then, is to enter into complete
thought connection with health. The best way to do this is to form a mental image or picture of yourself as being well, imagining a perfectly strong and healthy body, and to spend sufficient time in contemplating this image to make it your habitual thought of yourself.

The Human Guinea-Pig Who Mastered Mind Control

By Nick Webster
The Mirror UK

In A scene that could have come straight out of a sci-fi movie, Matthew Nagle focuses on the computer screen and, by pure mind control, the cursor begins to move.

But the state-of-the-art technology that allows this to happen is no work of fiction.

Incredibly, thanks a tiny plug that has been inserted into his brain, Matthew, a quadriplegic, is fighting back against the paralysis which has left him in a motorised wheelchair and unable to breathe unaided.

And as well as moving the cursor, he can play simple games and operate a prosthetic hand, too.

The astonishing innovation has brought fresh hope and happiness to the 25-year-old American.

Matthew volunteered to be the first human guinea pig to try the implant, called BrainGate, and believes the technology will eventually help him to walk again.

"I know I'm going to beat this. I've been paralysed for 39 months so I can stick with it another two years, until they get it perfected," he says.

Sleep In For Creative Spark

The most creative people in the world may be those lazy folks who sleep late and frequently indulge in mid-afternoon naps.

Bed--not the office or school--is the most fertile breeding ground for new ideas, reports the BBC News Online of new research from East of England Development Agency.

The researchers found that fully 33 percent of the people they polled said they get their best ideas in bed, while only 11 percent have their top ideas at work. The trick to generating the flow of creativity is to relax and get a break from everyday pressures.

Tyson Challenger Uses Hypnosis In Training Program

By Jason L. Miller

Thirty-nine-year-old Tyson, at 5'11 and 233 pounds, didn't appear at all intimidated by the 6'6, 271 pound Irishman.

According to Mike, he's fighting "a tomato can" on Saturday night at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.

Somebody should tell Mike that tomatoes are Italian, potatoes are Irish.

In addition to an age and size advantage, 31-year-old McBride claims to have an ace up his sleeve. He includes a hypnotist in his training camp.

"A lot of athletes use only 2% to 8% of their ability at any given time," said McBride, with a 32-4-1 record with 27 KOs. "What hypnosis does is send out signals to the subconscious mind that makes you leave nothing behind. I'm going to take it to Mike Tyson with a 100% effort. He's going to have to knock me out to win."

Only Using Part of Your Brain? Think Again...

By Michael Schirber
LiveScience Staff Writer

When ferrets watch the mind-bending movie The Matrix, brain activity is only slightly higher than when they stare at nothing. Scientists say this might mean something about how much of your brain is in use.

Ferret brain activity increased just 20 percent when looking at Keanu Reeves compared to looking at darkness, the study found.

When the lights were turned off, researchers expected that the activity would drop to zero, except for some random, "spontaneous" firing of neurons, explained study leader Michael Weliky from the University of Rochester. A brain region devoted to vision continued idling at 80 percent of full capacity.

Weliky likens this constant high level of activity to a radio station’s carrier signal. "The [20 percent] riding on top of that is reality," he said.

Beginner's Guide to Lucid Dreaming

(Editor's Note: This tutorial is from the website www.DreamViews.com which, in my opinion, is the best no-nonsense explanation of Lucid Dreaming and includes the most helpful information I've been able to find on the web.)

Focus on success
It is not enough just to simply say “I will try”. I think Yoda said it best: “No, try not, do or do not, there is no try”. Set in your mind the intention that you will succeed. Some people come to this forum and experience their first lucid dream in a few days. Many others have had to work at it for weeks or months. Remember, there is no try, you will succeed!

Keep a positive attitude
Perhaps your biggest obstacle to learning how to become a lucid dreamer is frustration. Unfortunately, frustration occurs very often, especially when you have been working at it for weeks and have seen no progress. It is counterproductive to go to bed at night frustrated and tense. It is best to think of it as an adventure or a journey. Try to go to bed at night with the attitude that you cannot wait for the adventure to begin. One thing is guaranteed, even if you do not experience a lucid dream, chances are as you improve your dream recall, you will have some very interesting dreams to write in your journal.

Be diligent in your efforts
This goes hand in hand on focusing on success. You will not get there by just playing at it. Follow the exercises or make up a few of your own. Whatever you do, make the effort everyday. Anything worth having is worth working for. You would be reading this right now unless you believe lucid dreaming is something worth having.

Well, now that all the cheerleading is done with, let’s move on. Read each section carefully and follow the suggestions provided in each. You should work on the activities in all three sections at the same time. Please extract what wisdom you can from each section and modify it to works best for you.

Think about this for a moment…

Does dealing with rude clients/customers make angry?

Do you find it draining when work is delayed due other people's incompetence?

If so, then your mind may be unwittingly creating stress in your life that is reducing your working stamina and capacity.

Scientists Begin Building a Simulated Brain

NewScientist.com news service

An effort to create the first computer simulation of the entire human brain, right down to the molecular level, was launched on Monday.

The “Blue Brain” project, a collaboration between IBM and a Swiss university team, will involve building a custom-made supercomputer based on IBM’s Blue Gene design.

The hope is that the virtual brain will help shed light on some aspects of human cognition, such as perception, memory and perhaps even consciousness.

It will be the first time humans will be able to observe the electrical code our brains use to represent the world, and to do so in real time, say Henry Markram, director of Brain and Mind Institute at the Ecole Polytecnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

It may also help in understanding how certain malfunctions of the brain’s “microcircuits” could cause psychiatric disorders such as autism, schizophrenia and depression, he says.

In Love or Insane?

Have you ever been crazy in love? Scientists now say the brain activity of those in a whirlwind romance is nearly identical to those with mental illness, Philadelphia television station WCAU reported.

New research with brain scans finds that new love lights up the part of the brain that is also lit up by thirst, hunger and a craving for drugs.

"Of course, drug addictions can be very powerful, very compelling kinds of experiences for people and the kinds of experiences that people feel they need to have that kind of thing," said Dr. Andrew Newberg at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. "And if love runs along those same lines, it's really not completely surprising the same brain areas would be involved."

That means that new love might be less emotion and more physical addiction. The study's authors call it life's greatest addiction.
